Tradition and progression. Protest and patriotism. May 1st, Labor Day, can be spent a number of ways in Bavaria's capital city. Some start the day early and continue tradtions raising a new Maypole.

Others visit one of the city's magnificent churches for holiday mass, or take to the streets celebrating their right to protest.

One sure thing is a visit to any number of the Volksfest celebrations ringing in the start of spring in the city.

Following a wonderful pre-tour add-on stay in beautiful Berchtesgaden, we kicked off the main portion of our 2022 Christmas Tour yesterday.

We enjoyed a wonderful welcome dinner with friends at the historic Atlas Post Hotel in Garmisch. Today, the first excursion of the main tour brings us back across to Austrian border to Innsbruck and the beloved market of Rattenberg.

Highlights from the pre-tour trip include Hallstatt and the Austrian lake district, Salzburg with Hellbrunn Palace, and the island Fraueninsel market on Lake Chiemsee.

With our recent Rome to Munich Passion Play tour behind us, we’re looking forward to this year’s fast-approaching Christmas tour. We can’t wait to return to this beloved holiday tradition as we visit great destinations throughout the Alps, Black Forest, and the Alsace region of France, A few highlights are sure to be Strausbourg, Heidelberg, Ulm, and of course, beautiful Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Today we were honored to have Secretary Djou of the American Battle Monuments Commission welcome our group at the Florence American Cemetery.

Over the years, we've had the opportunity to visit several memorial sites with guest including the moving memorials at Normandy, Aisne Marne, and Luxembourg.

We are always so proud how well our country preserves the memory of these American heroes while maintaining their final resting place.

During today's visit, Secretary Djou was kind enough to take a moment to visit with our group while speaking of the ultimate sacrifice the Americans resting there made during the liberation of Italy.

We had an incredible start to our Spring Passion Play Tour. From our accommodations in Sorrento, we visited the luxurious Island of Capri where we enjoyed a cruise surrounded by turquoise seas.

The next day we explored the extensive ancient ruins of Pompeii. The contrast couldn't be stronger as our journey from Pompeii continued with a high speed train to Rome. Zooming along at over 180 mph, the day concluded upon arrival at our wonderful accommodations in Rome with the iconic coliseum at our doorstep.

Grüß Gott and greetings from Jake and Pete in beautiful Bavaria! We hope all our followers in the Facebook world are doing well. After a period of radio silence, we’re happy to share a review of 2021 and an update regarding our future plans at Bavaria & Beyond Tours.

As the pandemic drew on, 2021 got off to a slow start. Our tours of the British Isles were postponed and are now tentatively scheduled for 2023. The summer was an exciting time as our private tour offerings generated a good amount of interest. It was such a joy sharing this beautiful region with groups of families and friends on private custom tours.

In the Fall, we were able to operate our first open group tour since the pandemic began. As an alternative to our British Isle itinerary, we offered an easy-going Bavarian-based tour. It was the perfect return to travel as we discovered some magnificent off-the-beaten-path destinations.

In November, we got back on the road again preparing for the return of our annual Christmas market tour. As we visited big cities and small towns in Bavaria and the neighboring state of Baden-Württemberg preparations for the fast-approaching markets were well underway. Unfortunately, a spike in corona infections led to the last-minute cancelation of nearly all German markets and our tour as a result thereof. We’re happy to say we will be announcing the postponed Christmas tour dates via our Newsletter in the coming weeks.

Looking forward to 2022, we’re excited about the private and open tours we have planned. In just a few days, we’ll be soaking in the Italian sun on the Amalfi Coast during a small group tour of Pompeii, Herreculeum, Sorrento, and Capri. A few days later, our Rome to Munich Passion Play tour begins. With small numbers on tour, we’re looking forward to traveling in comfort with Italies exceptional high-speed rail service. Naturally, we’ll be sharing lots of photos along the way.

In the Fall, we have a similar itinerary which we’re happy to say is now a confirmed GO. This group will be larger than our spring tour consisting of private coach travel. Spots are limited with a few spaces remaining. Interested parties can sign-up via our website at www.bavariaandbeyond.com.

Of course, we’re equally excited about the return of our annual Christmas tour and will begin accepting reservations in the coming weeks.

Great news shared today by the German Embassy. We have some exciting private group tours based here in beautiful Bavaria this August and can't wait to start guiding tours again. Now we hope that our 2021 "Beyond Bavaria" destinations will follow suit so we can operate our Fall tours through the British Isles! Regardless, this is definitely a big step in the right direction and we're excited to hear the day where we will once again be able to host guests here is drawing nearer.

77 years ago today, Operation Overlord commenced with the D-Day invasion on the beaches of Normandy. Throughout the course of the day, nearly 130,000 Allied soldiers would make their way to shore, spearheading the liberation of Europe. Of those forces, some 55,000 American soldiers and an additional 23,000 airborne troops would lead the charge. Through the brave efforts of these heroes, the initial invasion was a success and nearly 330,000 troops would make their way across the English channel, just days later, in support of the allied advance. Let us never forget the sacrifices made in the name of freedom on that fateful day.

Happy Memorial Day everyone! We hope all had a great day and were able to join us in remembering our fellow Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in laying down their lives in selfless service to their country and fellow Americans.

This will be our third and final post today as we share a few scenes from our visit to Luxembourg American Cemetery; the final resting place of General Patton and over 5,000 of his fellow servicemen.

The video below also includes clips from Bastogne and the Battle of the Buldge grounds where foxholes are still scattered throughout the forests surrounding this quaint Belgium town. As we leisurely strolled through the woods from one foxhole to the next, we learned that no matter the size, memorials both large and small, such as a hole-in-the-ground reminisce of war, can inspire us to remember the sacrifices made by our American service members.

Happy Memorial Day everyone! We hope you will join us today in remembering our fellow Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in laying down their lives in selfless service to their country and fellow Americans. Back in 2019, we had the privilege of guiding guests from London to Munich following in the footsteps of many of the heroes we remember today. It was one of the most moving trips we’ve organized to date and today we’ve decided to share a few clips from that journey which took us to three American memorial cemeteries abroad.

Our first clip highlights a visit to the battlefields of Normandy where thousands of heroes led the charge to liberate Europe. On these waters where battleships attacked and soldiers were once jostled by rough seas, peaceful ferries now sail. On the beaches where bullets flew and bombs once soared, children now play, as travelers from around the free world pay homage to the sacrifices made on the infamous beaches of Normandy.

Laying above the scenic shoreline sits the Normandy American Cemetery, our nation's first memorial on European ground, where over 9,000 American soldiers lay rest today.

It really has been a delight looking back at all the great memories made during Christmas tours from years past. Nestled away in the rolling Ore Mountain (Erzgebirge) region of Saxony is the town of Annaberg-Buchholz, our destination for day number 23 of our virtual advent calendar. Like many towns in this part of Germany, the village of Annaberg-Buchholz is known for its traditional Christmas goods and it’s storied mining tradition. During our visit in 2019, we were able to experience both during a cultural tour of this quaint town where Jake has been visiting extended relatives for years. The days full-packed itinerary included visits to a centuries old mine, a delightful cozy German restaurant, medieval blacksmith shop, cultural center, wood carving shop, and of course, the local town Christmas Market.
