Museen in Hamburg: Das Gebäude für das Medizinhistorische Museum im Universitätsklinikum Eppendorf wurde 1926 durch für theoretische Institute und Forschungslaboratorien fertiggestellt. Bis 2006 wurden im Sektionssaal noch entsprechende Tätigkeiten durchgeführt.

Das im angesiedelte Museum erklärt seit 2010 in seinen Dauerausstellungen die Geschichte der , , , , , und geht seit 2017 in seinem Lern- und Gedenkort auf die Medizinverbrechen im ein, die durch sogenannte , und mehrere 100.000 Menschen das Leben kosteten.

Wenn man an Gewürze denkt, dann vielleicht zuerst an die Küche Indiens oder an orientalische Märkte. Doch auch in Deutschland gibt es eine lange Tradition des Gewürzhandels, insbesondere in der Hansestadt Hamburg. Und wo könnte man mehr über Gewürze erfahren als im Gewürzmuseum in der Hamburger Speicherstadt?

Das Spicy's Gewürzmuseum ist ein Ort voller Geschmäcker, Gerüche und Geschichte. Hier kann man die Vielfalt der Gewürze erleben, die von den alten Handelsrouten nach Europa gebracht wurden. Today I visited one of the oldest institutions of - The Patriotic Society est. 1765 and was - again - impressed not only by their stunning building from 1847 but also by their slogan and passion: since the this financially and politically independent organisation aims to "take over tasks of public interest" like the foundation of: the Association of the History of Hamburg, the public libraries, the public baths, a professional school, the introduction of first .

Still today, this is their primary goal: to serve society and make open discussion possible for everyone. All events of the Patriotic Society are free of charge. Of course, you can donate or become a member! You don't need to be rich...

Digitale Gemeinderundgänge in Ulzburg
Als qualifizierte und Kind des Ortes kam die größte Gemeinde in auf mich zu, um Rundgänge an diesem geschichtsträchtigen Knotenpunkt zu gestalten. Für all diejenigen, die in Henstedt-Ulzburg beheimatet oder zugezogen sind, wird klar sein, dass sich im heutigen Ortsbild kaum noch etwas von der Geschichte der ehemals vier einzelnen Ortschaften zu sehen ist. Schnell war klar, dass ein mit historischen Fotos unterstützt werden muss. So entstand bei mir die Idee, mit der App zu arbeiten und somit neben geführten Rundgängen auch selbstgeführte, digitale Gemeinderundgänge zu erstellen.

Begeisterung für Future History und Mitarbeit von unterschiedlichen Ecken
Auftraggeber ist für Guide Sarah nicht nur die Gemeinde Henstedt-Ulzburg, sondern auch Henstedt-Ulzburg Marketing. Darüberhinaus erhalte ich Unterstützung durch Herrn Zelck vom Gemeindearchiv Henstedt-Ulzburg und kann auf viel Vorarbeit des Arbeitskreises Ortsgeschichte zurückgreifen, der bereits mehrere Publikationen zur Geschichte der Gemeinde veröffentlicht hat. Ehemalige Unternehmer:innen und Bürgermeister:innen engagieren sich, um den digitalen Rundgang mit Leben zu füllen.

Future History überzeugt neuen Features
Als Partner der Future History App kann Henstedt-Ulzburg Marketing nun Rundgänge erstellen, historische Fotos mit aktuellen überblenden oder sogar augmented reality vor Ort verfügbar machen, um Gästen und selbstverständlich Bürgern der Gemeinde eine umfangreiche und kurzweilige Möglichkeit zu geben, sich in die Geschichte Henstedt-Ulzburgs zu vertiefen. Henstedt-Ulzburg Marketing und Hamburg Guide Sarah werden in den nächsten Monaten weiter an den Rundgängen und an ihrer Veröffentlichung arbeiten, um sie zum Sommer 2022 allen Interessierten kostenfrei zur Verfügung zu stellen.

hands over her seat in the EXBO of WFTGA
For a year now, I have been co-opted member of the Executive Board of the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations. I have learned so much and have experienced highs and lows – thanks to the pandemic. I had a lot of fun and have met great people from all over the world who – like me – dedicate time, effort and money for their voluntary work. Last week at the hybrid conference a new executive board was elected and I will now hand over my tasks in oder to concentrate on my regional association Hamburg Guides.

For us to deliver an in person event and at the same time facilitate the possibility to vote and take part in the event, we decided to carry out a hybrid event – First time in WFTGA’s history. Our original plan to hold the convention in Serbia was unfortunately not possible anymore and so we had six weeks to prepare this hybrid show: website and registration, zoom and technology, elections and biddings, conference place and live transmission – all this had to be included – and WE MADE IT – together with -Streaming! Certainly, some things need a bit of polishment but overall, the convention, workshops, excursions, general assembly, live streaming went smoothly and we are looking forward to the next hybrid event…

During our conference we also chose the next destination of our convention. The winner was Syracuse, Italy, against Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Istanbul, Turkey, Fukuoka, Japan. This means that at the end of January 2024 a huge amount of tourist guides from around the globe will populate Syracuse in order to celebrate the end of the pandemic, the tourist guide profession and themselves. I am really looking forward to meeting also all those colleagues who were not able to join us last week – or only virtually. The World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations is an affiliate member of and is in contact with many international tourism organisations and gives their members teh possibility to exchange ideas and contacts.

Qualified Tourist Guides getting together

It’s one of my favourite times of year when qualified tourist guides from all over the world come together (this year in a hybrid mode) to exchange ideas, talk about the art and future of guiding, and socialise. I love to communicate in different languages, see how tourism in other countries is perceived, which great ideas colleagues from other regions have and have put into practice.

Exchange of ideas and training

During our biannual conferences, we offer interactive workshops, inspiring speakers, the general assembly but also a great side programme, which is a bit reduced this time due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, we have found a way to have tourist guides from every corner of the world participate – in our first ever hybrid meeting with the in person hub being Madrid. For the last year, I have served as a coopted secretary in the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations . I must admit, it wasn’t always easy – especially in times of pandemic when we could never be sure whether what we had planned could really be put into practice. Working with an international team – remotely throughout different time zones poses challenges we needed to tackle and overcome. This has left traces in each of us Board Members – but not only scars – also achievements!

I’m looking forward to the convention although I’ll be “retiring” from the board – at least for now – to dedicate my time to other interesting challenges in my home association – .

Ältestes erhaltenes Speichergebäude in Hamburgs

Das Internationale Maritime Museum ist wohl eines der bekanntesten und größten Museen in – und dabei kein staatliches. Die seit 2008 im ehemaligen Kaispeicher B untergebrachte Sammlung von Peter Tamm Senior umfasst diverse Objekte zur Seeschifffahrt mit mehreren zehntausend Schiffsmodellen. Der Kaispeicher B steht an der Ostseite der Speicherstadt – im Gegensatz zum Kaispeicher A, der heute das Grundgerüst der darstellt. 1878 als Getreidesilo gebaut, wurde der Kaispeicher B bereits 1884 zum Bodenspeicher umgebaut.

Von zwei Seiten von Wasser umgeben, konnten Waren von Schuten (flachen Booten) über den Magdeburger Hafen an- und abgeladen werden. Wenn man sich die anschaut, merkt man direkt, dass dieser neugotische Stil der Hannoverschen Schule, in der später die gesamte Speicherstadt errichtet wurde, vorauswarf.

Das Internationale Maritime Museum entsteht

Der Umzug von Peter Tamms Sammlung aus von der in die heutige war einerseits nicht unumstritten, bot andererseits jedoch mehrere Vorteile: die umfangreiche Sammlung fand ein neues, größeres Heim, das nun auch der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden konnte und gleichzeitig konnte die Stadt Hamburg mit Hilfe von einer Mischung aus Steuergeldern und Spenden verschiedener Reedereien den schon seit Jahren baufälligen Speicher zweckgebunden sanieren und schützen. Der Betrieb des Museums wird seither nicht staatlich unterstützt, sondern durch Eintrittsgelder der Besucher sowie durch ehrenamtliche Helfer in allen Bereichen erfolgreich aufrechterhalten.

Communication can be difficult

Talking about the past and the future, the now and the then, the ones and the others, the strangers and us, about cultures, traditions, dark history, bright history, about and , challenges and achievements, about and , about believes, customs, law and order or what is perceived as such – is not an easy task.

Qualified Tourist Guides as Ambassadors

As a tourist guide I am deeply rooted here because I am an ambassador of my region, I love and and I love . Does this make me arrogant or superior? Do I influence my guests? – How?

The role of a is to ‘guide visitors in the language of their choice and interpret the natural and cultural heritage of the area’.

Consequently, our way of talking about facts shapes the way visitors see our area – wherever it may be on this world. This is why I try to talk about events and people as neutrally as possible without judging – although I know I’m biased. I do my homework for example in researching headlines from newspapers to not believe them blindly, but to find the truth. I try to find different perspectives and dimensions to the aspects I talk about and I definitely do no harm, which includes taking care of the environment, the inhabitants’ daily life and my guests’ data.

Dignified Storytelling

All in all this is what   means. While the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations  has already taken the pledge on behalf of all qualified tourist guides around the world, it was my desire to do so on my own, as because in my opinion we cannot give enough thought on what and how we communicate to others. I encourage all colleagues to take the pledge as well.
