As a student at BIMM Institute Hamburg you’re not only going to spend your time in lecture rooms and studios – you are also going to have the opportunity to engage with the music industry outside the classroom through a variety of internships and work placements. Many of our students have worked at Hamburg’s most popular labels, agencies and recording studios during their studies and, in doing so, have got their foot in the door.

We caught up with Music Business student Max Jargsdorf to talk about his job at Oktober Promotion that focuses on different PR areas like print, online, radio, social media and TV.

'As this is my first job in the music industry, I get first practical experience and contacts. Also, I’m constantly discovering music as we have a lot of newcomers and underground artists on our radar. I also see this as a steppingstone for more to come. The contacts and the big network surrounding this company is one of the most important things for me in my studies. As you know: networking is everything in the music industry!'

We are delighted to announce that vocalist Anna Hirschgänger, who recently graduated from our BA (Hons) Vocals course at BIMM Institute Hamburg, won the KRACH + GETÖSE Hamburg Music Award. Under the artist name Deer Anna she writes and plays indie folk music that has been compared to Phoebe Bridgers, Daughter, Aurora und Novo Amo.

Anna and each of the other four winners who were awarded the KRACH + GETÖSE Award received prize money of €1200. They will also be mentored for 12 months and receive guidance from industry professionals, clubs, festivals, studios, agencies and the arts funding body, Haspa Musik Stiftung, and much more! We talked to Anna about her win:

'I’m very much looking forward to getting some help regarding booking and getting to play some festival gigs and maybe even a support tour for some bigger artist. A dream would be to play at The Great Escape Festival which KRACH+GETÖSE has a partnership with. I’m also really excited about just having some extra people around me with special expertise to talk to for advice and guidance.'

For this year’s End of Year Gig at BIMM Institute Hamburg, we teamed up with graphic designer Alexander Hanke, who founded Hamburg design studio and label Studio Zum Heimathafen and specialises in designing posters for concerts and festivals, to ask him to create a special poster for us.

'My heart was always in the music scene, so I was seeking for jobs in the scene and in a way that led to so-called ‘gig posters’. These usually give me the chance to work quite freely and at the same time I can create something for people whose music I listen to and admire.'

Students visited Alexander’s design studio for an exclusive masterclass where he talked about the importance of design in music, the process of creating our poster and at the end, our students also got to screenprint our poster. We talked to Alexander about his work and the key to a great design.

Music Business student Feodora Stücklschwaiger not only played a wonderful DJ set at last year’s End-of-Year Gig - she has also founded her own music collective and is producing her own music. We caught up with her to talk about her journey so far, her plans for the future, her collective W.A.L.E and of course studying at BIMM Institute Hamburg!

"Studying at BIMM redirected my creative journey once again. Maybe I will perform my music on stage with a band one day, or I will operate behind the scenes and be responsible for all the happiness. (...) The people I’ve met influenced me in so many ways, which I appreciate with all my heart! I found people like Andreas Mann, who helped me to realise projects I never thought I would. If you are eager to build a network and keep (once again) an open mind you have all those opportunities in reach!"

We caught up with Ava von der Mehden, Music Business student at BIMM Institute Hamburg and founder of FINTAREI Festival, to talk about the festival and its representation in the music industry.
FINTAREI was founded by Ava to support and highlight the work of local female and non-binary artists.

"The feminist movement and supporting Finta* personas in the industry has been very important to me for as long as I can remember. I grew up living with my sister and mum, who works as a self-employed photographer and always got paid less than men in the industry, which is the case in most areas of business around the world. So, I kind of see it as my mission as a woman starting out in the music industry to take a different approach and bring awareness to this problem(...)"

*Finta: Stands for Frauen* (women in German), Inter*, nicht-binäre (non-binary in German), Trans* and agender

This Friday, April 8 at 4pm, our Masterclass is really something extra special: we’ll be screen printing by hand BIMM Hamburg’s End of Year Gig poster!

Alex Hanke from Zum Heimathafen is hosting an external Masterclass where he will discuss the importance of design in music as well as the creative process of designing our unique End of Year Gig poster.

If you plan to release music as an artist or will be a part of release campaigns in the future, concert posters or album art is never something to be overlooked. Not only will Alex lead this discussion at his print studio near Holstenstraße, but students will also have the opportunity to pull the last colour of the screen-printed poster with their own hands.

Topics to be discussed in this Masterclass may include:

• Alex's road to music
• Working for small or big names
• What it takes to survive
• The importance of art and design within music
• The creation from start to finish of this years “BIMM End of Year Gig“ poster
• We’ll print the last color of the poster together!

Alex Hanke is a Hamburg based illustrator/graphic designer/screen printer and runs “Studio Zum Heimathafen“, under which he screen prints gig posters and art prints. With his work he’s deeply connected within the music industry, from album artwork to merchandise or his early steps as a concert organizer. He worked with Live Nation, FKP Scorpio, City Slang and artists like Foo Fighters, Calexico, Elbow, Feist or Sigur Rós but also very small independent acts.

Sign up now on BIMM Connect to attend this off-site Masterclass followed by a Q&A and screen printing afterwards!

Where?
In-person and offsite at Zum Heimathafen print studio (location to be emailed to you upon signing up).
