Farewell to Karim Aga Khan: A Visionary Creator of the Costa Smeralda

Aga Khan’s passion for nautical pursuits was reflected in the development of the Costa Smeralda – a visionary project launched in the 1960s.

In 1962, the prince acquired vast coastal areas and founded the Costa Smeralda Consortium, aiming to transform the region into an exclusive hub for luxury and yachting.

„In 1960, Prince Karim Aga Khan came to the coast for the first time, a place inhabited only by a few shepherds and small farmers. The peaceful silence and the extraordinary beauty of the still untouched landscape impressed the prince so much that he decided, together with his friends, to buy a piece of land ...“

A piece of land?
The acquired coastal strip was longer than the entire Belgian coastline and almost as large as Bermuda with its 350 islands. Where Sardinia’s unspoiled nature once reigned, an exclusive holiday paradise emerged. Karim Aga Khan himself once proudly stated:
„We were the ones who put this forgotten piece of land on the map. In 1960, Sardinia’s history was enriched by another, this time a blessed invasion.“

With his vision and dedication, Karim Aga Khan not only shaped the Costa Smeralda but also left a lasting mark on the maritime world. His legacy lives on.

Addio a Karim Aga Khan: Un Visionario Creatore della Costa Smeralda

La passione di Aga Khan per la nautica si è riflessa nello sviluppo della Costa Smeralda, un progetto visionario lanciato negli anni ‚60.

Nel 1962, il principe acquistò vaste aree costiere e fondò il Consorzio Costa Smeralda, con l’obiettivo di trasformare la regione in un esclusivo centro di lusso e yachting.

🌿 Citazione dal libro „Sardegna – Isola da fiaba nel Mediterraneo“ di Walter Kuppel (1980, ECON Verlag):
„Nel 1960, il principe Karim Aga Khan arrivò per la prima volta su questa costa, abitata solo da pochi pastori e piccoli agricoltori. Il silenzio pacifico e la straordinaria bellezza del paesaggio ancora incontaminato impressionarono così tanto il principe che decise, insieme ai suoi amici, di acquistare un pezzo di terra ...“

Un pezzo di terra?
Il tratto di costa acquisito era più lungo dell’intera costa belga e quasi grande quanto le Bermuda con le sue 350 isole. Dove un tempo regnava la natura incontaminata della Sardegna, sorse un esclusivo paradiso turistico. Karim Aga Khan stesso dichiarò con orgoglio:
„Siamo stati noi a mettere questo pezzo di terra dimenticato sulla mappa. Nel 1960, la storia della Sardegna fu arricchita da un’altra invasione, questa volta benedetta.“

Con la sua visione e il suo impegno, Karim Aga Khan non solo ha plasmato la Costa Smeralda, ma ha anche lasciato un segno indelebile nel mondo della nautica. La sua eredità vive ancora.

Zum Abschied von Karim Aga Khan: Ein visionärer Gestalter der Costa Smeralda

Aga Khans Leidenschaft für die Nautik fand Ausdruck in der Entwicklung der Costa Smeralda – einem visionären Projekt, das in den 1960er Jahren ins Leben gerufen wurde.

1962 erwarb der Prinz umfangreiche Küstengebiete und gründete das Costa Smeralda Konsortium, um die Region in ein exklusives Zentrum für Luxus und Yachting zu verwandeln.

🌿 Zitat aus dem Buch „Sardinien - Märcheninsel im Mittelmeer“ von Walter Kuppel (1980, ECON Verlag):
„Im Jahre 1960 kam Prinz Karim Aga Khan zum ersten Male an die Küste, welche nur von wenigen Hirten und Kleinbauern bewohnt war. Die friedliche Stille und die außerordentliche Schönheit der noch unberührten Landschaft beeindruckten den Prinz so sehr, daß er sich entschloß, zusammen mit seinen Freunden ein Stück Land zu kaufen ...“

Ein Stück Land?
Der erworbene Küstenstreifen war länger als die gesamte belgische Meeresküste und fast so groß wie die Bermudas mit ihren 350 Inseln. Wo einst die unberührte Natur Sardiniens regierte, entstand nun ein exklusives Ferienparadies. Karim Aga Khan selbst sagte einst stolz:
„Wir haben dieses vergessene Stück Land erst auf die Landkarte gesetzt. 1960 wurde die Geschichte Sardiniens durch eine weitere, diesmal segensreiche Invasion bereichert.“
