After yesterday’s Rosenmontag parade, the streets of Köln (Cologne) are still buzzing with the echoes of « Kamelle! » (Carnival candy) and « Strüssjer! » (small bunch of flowers)—as thousands of eager spectators caught sweet treats and freebies tossed from the parade floats. Imagine—over 300 tons of sweets, 700,000 bars of chocolate, and 300,000 flower bouquets filling the air!
Throughout Carnival, the city of Köln lets loose, reviving a spirited atmosphere that dates back to medieval times, when Germanic peoples celebrated the winter solstice as a tribute to the gods and to drive away evil winter demons. Later, Christians adopted these pagan customs, ushering in the pre-Easter fasting period with Carnival (carne vale = farewell to meat).
At Distinctly Deutschland, we are committed to making your trip unforgettable through full immersion in local customs and events, such as the Kölner Karneval. Reach out via the email in our bio to discover more.
