The German Wine Route Cycle Trail is a really special route that covers some 100 kilometres along the boundary between the western Rhine plain and the steep ascents of the Palatinate Forest: seas of vineyards on one side and serried ranks of trees on the other, with cultivated fields and lush green meadows between them. To either side of the cycle trail route, there are lots of interesting and easy little diversions, including this morning’s visit to Hambach Castle and your lunch break at a lovely picnic spot.

In 1150, Rudolf von Eltz was the first to bear the name of the castle and pass it down to his descendants. This has been the way for 34 generations now, with an uninterrupted line of succession from the Middle Ages to the present.

The Eifelsteig trail crosses borders. The first stretch is in North Rhine-Westphalia, while the majority is in Rhineland Palatinate. This is an example of a successful cooperation that put the spotlight on 1,600 kilometres of hiking trails before combining the best 312 in a long-distance hiking trail in 2009. It has a quality seal as a premium hiking trail, is among the first ‘Top Trails of Germany’ and was named Germany’s loveliest hiking trail by Wandermagazin in 2015.

It is always worth climbing down from the heights into the Rhine valley to wander through the old streets of the wine-making villages, dive into the little wine bars for a glass of riesling and Flammkuchen and enjoy the museums and castles from the Middle Ages or Napoleonic period. It is easy to lose track of time.

In a time when Bibles were largely painstakingly written and illustrated by hand in monasteries, Johannes Gutenberg’s black art of printing was initially eyed with suspicion. But his results could keep pace with the excellent quality of the handwritten manuscripts. Today, the Gutenberg Bibles are considered some of the most beautiful books in the world.
During a guided tour of the Gutenberg Museum, visitors are given the opportunity to set their hands to making a page of the Bible using a reconstructed printing press.

Find out more about Johannes Gutenberg and his hometown Mainz here:

Do you know who invented letterpress printing? Follow in the footsteps of Johannes Gutenberg of Mainz and find out about his invention in the Gutenberg Museum.
