Another common question we get...Which gear do I invest in?

Getting kitted out for hiking can seem like a big investment when you first start out. Here are our top tips for where to splash out and where you can save:

🥾Hiking boots- this is where your big bucks should go. Solid hiking boots are the basis of happy and long hiking adventures. They should have a solid sole, be waterproof and have adequate ankle support (especially if you are multi-day hiking). Invest in a good pair of boots and these will be your friend for many years. You can even get them re-soled further down the line.

💦 Waterproofs – your protective layer, against rain and just as importantly – wind! For alpine treks a three-layer waterproof jacket with sealed seams is worth the investment and will pay off in the long run. You can save money on a lesser technical model of waterproof over trousers – still a must for multi-day alpine trekking.

🎒 Rucksacks – These are an item, where you could look for a second-hand model – just check that it’s a good fit and that all the clasps are functional. To revive its waterproofing, you can give it a wash and re-waterproof with a spray. If it doesn’t have a waterproof cover, you can pick one up at an outdoor store.

👕 Layers- Fleece, underwear, socks, hat and gloves. These just need to be functional and not cotton. And guess what...they can be used for multiple different sports too! If you’ve got a birthday coming up, these make great gift hints 😉

Remember, you don’t need all the gear all at once. Little by little, you can build up your outdoor wardrobe and will discover items that you could no longer live without!

“Hiking across the Alps with Ceri and a likeminded group of hikers was an experience for the bucket list. While the trek may seem daunting Ceri, broke the trip into manageable days that were full of variety in scenery, flora, fauna, accommodation, difficulty.

The motivation and support from the group along the way meant I was excited to wake up and tackle the day, ready to see what was in store.

Celebrating at the end of the trip with Italian pizza and Aperol Spritz and thinking, "Wow, I made it across the Alps," brought me a happiness level of 10/10. 1 highly recommend this tour for anyone looking to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the Alps while tackling something genuinely amazing.”

✨ 5 Natural Highlights of a Transalp hike

⛰ Changing geology – what is incredibly special about a transalp route, is the contrast in geology that we meet along the way. As we traverse through diverse landscapes, from the limestone Alps in the North to the granite and metamorphic rock of the central Alps, witness the geological tale of the Alps' formation unfold before your eyes.

🌸 Experience the Alpine flowers in the height of the season – from the Alpenrose to the deep blue Gentian – the meadows in July are exploding with colour and fragrance.

🦅 Meet the locals – our route takes us to the realm of the toughest of alpine creatures, from the playful marmots to the majestic eagles and nimble mountain goats – giving us an insight into their distinct characteristics and incredible survival strategies.

💦 Alpine lakes and rivers – the stunning fjord-like Achensee lake provides a magnificent backdrop for our hike on day two. The captivating turquoise waters’ colour invite us for a refreshing dip or revitalising foot bath at the end of the day. Mountain streams, rivers and waterfalls along the Zillertal provide tranquil spots to rest and rejuvenate.

🌄 The night sky - we spend several nights above the valleys, where the night sky provides the best evening viewing. Whether witnessing the vivid canvas of sunset or gazing at the stars and galaxies above, immerse yourself in the awe and wonder of the natural world.

This year's Transalp trek sets off on Friday, July 19th. Will you be joining us for this unforgettable adventure?

Do you wonder how to gauge your hiking and trekking level? We often get asked the question – how do I assess my fitness and skills for a trek?

We find it easiest to break this down into three categories:

1. Altitude: This is the big one that is hard to assess if you live in lowlands. If you have no previous experience then it is advisable to start with a hike or a trek where altitude gradually builds up over the course of the trek, as you get stronger every day.

2. Distance: What distance are you capable of and used to walking? This gives you an idea also of your endurance capabilities- how many hours a day are you comfortable walking? Adding distance and altitude together obviously means longer walking time, than if you were walking on the flat.

3. Terrain: Hiking trails vary from wide forest tracks to narrow, exposed rocky trails and some scrambling. What are you comfortable with? Do you have a head for heights? If not, this eliminates trails that are exposed and many peak ascents. Are you sure-footed? This means do you have the balance and technique to walk on unmaintained paths, that might be slippery or uneven underfoot?

You can read more about how we grade the hiking grading for our hikes and treks here: https://www.4elements.eu/difficulty-rating-mountain-hiking

Of course, building up fitness, stamina and technique is great preparation for any trek and we are happy to help advise you if you have questions about this!

N.B. If you have any physical or health issues, it is of course advisable to check with your medical practitioner too!

🌄 Multi-day hiking means we can get deeper into the mountains and explore the wilder side of alpine terrain.

🌲 It also allow us to disconnect from the tech and stresses of everyday life and really unwind.

🏡 Behind the Scenes: Choosing Accommodation with Care 🌿

Have you ever wondered what makes treks with 4elements so special? An integral part is the attention that we pay to selecting accommodation—they're part of the experiences in themselves! Here's a peek into how we choose where you rest after a day of adventure:

🌎 Cultural Immersion: Each accommodation is handpicked to offer a glimpse into local life and traditions. From idyllically situated mountain lodges with rustic charm to stays in picturesque villages, every place tells a story.

🛏 Comfort and Well-being: Some nights we embrace the simplicity of basic accommodation, immersing ourselves in the raw beauty of our surroundings. Other nights we relax in more comfortable hotels with all the modern amenities. This mix ensures you experience the best of alpine culture and have the rest and recovery you deserve, ready for the next day's adventures.

🌿Sustainability Matters: We prioritise eco-friendly options whenever possible, supporting establishments that share our commitment to preserving the natural beauty, local heritage and culture of the places we visit.

🥾Accessibility and Safety: Whether it's proximity to trekking routes or ensuring safety measures are in place, we take every aspect into consideration to make your stay seamless and worry-free.

🍰 Culinary Delights: As well as providing solid nourishment needed for trekking, we believe that sampling the flavours, along the route is an enriching part of the journey and adds to the trek experience. Whether it's a hearty mountain meal cooked with fresh local ingredients or a coffee and cake stop, we ensure your taste buds are delighted along with your adventure.

✨ We believe these overnight stays are as important as the journey themselves.

So here’s a little information about one of our favourite summer treks… the Transalp. What we looooove about the transalp is that you get it all – the best of alpine cultures and hospitality, landscapes that change day, by day and did we mention the food?! 😜

Our journey starts just south of the Tegernsee in Bavaria, before we cross into the Austrian Tyrol, hiking along the stunning Achensee Lake before hitting the high alpine trails along the Zilltertal valley. With views of 3000m+ peaks around us, we cross the border into the Italian South Tyrol, where lush alpine meadows and charming mountain villages await. ✨

Our trek finishes in the charming town of Sterzing, where we celebrate our successful Alpine traverse with Aperol Sprizz and delicious pizza. 🍕

Our carefully crafted itinerary ensures an immersive experience of alpine mountain life, balancing adventure with comfort. From cozy mountain farm stays to delightful hotel accommodations, we provide the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. 🌄

If you're seeking an unforgettable adventure in the Alps that allows you to both challenge yourself and savoru the beauty of the mountains, the Transalp Trek is tailor-made for you! 🥾

Hey there, adventurers! 👋 If we've had the pleasure of crossing paths or connecting before, chances are you already know me, but just in case I thought I’d do a quick reintroduction. I'm Ceri Temple, founder of 4elements. 🌱

I thought I’d take the opportunity to share a little snippet of my journey with you and give you a peak behind the curtain at 4elements. Born in France, raised in the UK and now British-German, my wanderlust led me to fall head over heels for travel and the mountains. From skiing in winter to hiking in summer, the Alps became my playground, my sanctuary and my teacher. 🌄

In 2012, fueled by a burning desire to share these experiences, I launched 4elements. With a background in teaching, outdoor education, and various outdoor leadership qualifications- from ski instructor to UIMLA International Mountain Leader -I'm dedicated to crafting unforgettable experiences for all. I'm deeply passionate about the transformative power of nature and adventure on personal well-being, community, society, and our planet. It's what I believe sets 4elements apart—we create experiences that foster deep connections with local cultures, environments, and each other, inspiring lasting bonds that flourish over time. 🌻

I’m based now in Kochel am See, Bavaria and when I'm not out and about with 4elements, you'll find me hiking in the mountains or skiing backcountry, always with a smile on my face- unless it’s a powder day or there’s a slice of cake- then I’ll be grinning from ear to ear! 😎

Traveling low-impact in the Bavarian Alps during winter is crucial to respecting the delicate balance of the ecosystem. Here's how you can journey responsibly:

💚 Familiarise yourself with protected areas marked on maps to steer clear of sensitive habitats.

💚 Avoid traversing summit ridges and low-shrub zones, especially between 4pm and 10am, as these areas are vital for wildlife survival, such as the black grouse (Birkhuhn).

💚 Stick to designated routes recommended by organizations like DAV (German Alpine Club) when passing through woodlands to minimise disturbance to the environment.

💚 Stay vigilant of the landscape and refrain from trampling on areas undergoing reforestation or young saplings, allowing them to thrive undisturbed.

💚 Leave no trace: Practice the golden rule of outdoor ethics by ensuring you carry out everything you bring in, from apple cores to toilet paper, pack a small rubbish bag for this eventuality.

By following these simple principles, we can enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors in winter whilst minimising our impact on the natural habitat.

💬 One question we get asked a lot is how to dress for winter hiking. In theory, there is little difference to summer hiking... it’s all about the layers 💡

Here are a few key principles to keep you toasty and dry:

🧅 Think like an onion- layering is your heat control system, allowing you to easily adjust your temperature as you warm up and then add warmth as you cool down.
👕 Start with base layers- both thermal merino/ synthetic base layers, will keep you warm and wick away moisture. Ski thermals work here.
🪶 A fleece and down/ primaloft layer add warmth when you are taking a break or going down hill.
🧥 Windproof and waterproof outer layers are essential – to keep in that lovely cushion of body heat and prevent you getting wet.
💦 Avoiding sweating is key, as this will cool you down. Start cooler and add layers if need be.
🎒Pack a spare base layer always, to switch out before a descent or in case of an emergency.
🧤Don’t forget a hat and gloves- a lighter pair for when you’re going up hill and a warmer pair for the descent!

5 reasons to get out and hike in Winter:

💙 It’s good for your health! Whatever the weather, out in nature the oxygen content of the air is high and activity or sport intensifies your breathing and hence O2 intake – nourishing your breathing apparatus and immune system

🌲Peace and quiet – with less people on the trails, and landscapes wrapped under a blanket of snow, winter hikes offer a unique sense of solitude and stillness.

🤩 Wake up! Grey days can sometimes make you feel like you are half asleep all day. By going outside there is still enough light intensity to keep the sleepy hormone melatonin at bay and hence drive away sleepiness- nature’s coffee ;-)

❄️Winter wonderland wonders – whether it’s the delicate formation of frost on a branch, the imprints of a hoof in the snow or a glistening meadow of snow, a winter walk is full of moments of awe, where we can connect with the magical natural world.

🧁A cup of hot tea and slice of cake when you get back in tastes sooooo good!

WILD PORTUGAL 🇵🇹

What an amazing walk we had along our inaugural trek along Portugal’s wild west coast! It was a journey through the elements and our senses. 🌊

We switched between conversation and walking in tranquil silence, punctuated by the symphony of crashing waves and coastal birds. The sweet scent of rock rose filled the air as we traversed dunes and cliff tops. 🌿

Also, a voyage into the heart of Portuguese cuisine and warm hospitality, our taste buds were treated to a delicious array of local delights, from the fresh catch of the day to the heavenly pastel de nata. 😋

But, most importantly, a gift of a week making unforgettable memories and new connections. We celebrated life, friendship, and the beauty of the world around us, and for that, we're truly grateful. 🌎❤️

Looking forward to returning 2024 already 📅 19th- 26th October 2024.
