Luneburg Heath, with its largest continuous heathland areas, offers a natural landscape that is unique in Central Europe. When the heath blossoms in August and September, the landscape of the Lüneburger Heide radiates its very special charm. Vivid purple of many millions of flowers, interrupted by the rich green of junipers and pines and the silvery white of birches colour the whole region.
If the climatic conditions remain balanced, the most common heather species Calluna vulgaris blossoms from early August to mid-September. An old Heidjer rule of thumb says: the heather blooms from 08.08. to 09.09. of a year!

Good starting points for a hike, bike tour or horse-drawn carriage ride in the Lüneburger Heide nature reserve are the heath villages of Niederhaverbeck, Oberhaverbeck, Döhle and Undeloh.
Nature Park Südheide: In the Southern Heath Nature Park you will find the heath areas around the heath villages of Müden (Örtze), Faßberg, Hermannsburg and Unterlüß.
Without "Heidschnucken" no heather bloom
The Heidschnucken, also called police of the heath, are essential for the heath blossom. They are a special breed of sheep with long fur and a black head. During their daily walks through the heath, they eat the shoots and small plants around the heath, giving the heather plant enough air to develop. In addition, they crush the spider nests between the heather plants, so that the heather bees can easily pollinate the flowers. A true interplay of nature.
