🏞️ TOUR OF THE VANOISE 🏞️

Nestled in the heart of Vanoise National Park, France's first national park, this alpine wonderland is a paradise for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts!

With over 300 peaks soaring above 3000m, the landscape here is nothing short of breathtaking. Glaciers, rolling meadows, and glacial lakes showcase the raw beauty of this park, offering a serene escape from the crowds and hustle of more popular regions.

This hut-to-hut hike provides a unique experience, guiding you through the dramatic corners of the French Alps, close to the Swiss border. Enjoy comfortable trails, friendly hut staff, and frequent sightings of charming marmots along the way.

Unlike many other hut hiking tours, the Tour of the Vanoise stays high, rarely descending into valleys. This makes it perfect for those seeking minimal elevation changes and mellow grades (your knees will thank us!).

Earlier this week, we shared some common animals you could spot along the trails in the Alps. In spirit of sharing flora and fauna local to the Alps, we thought it was time to share some plants you are likely to find:

🌼 Larch Trees: In the fall, the larch trees in the Alps turn a brilliant golden color before shedding their needles.

🌼 Edelweiss: The iconic edelweiss flower is often associated with the Alps. This hardy white flower grows at high altitudes and has become a symbol of rugged beauty.

🌼 Alpine Gentian: The vibrant blue Alpine gentian is another well-known flower found in the Alps. It's known for its stunning color and is often used in traditional herbal remedies.

Did you know that there are over 800 huts scattered across the Alps? These incredible refuges are steeped in history, brimming with culture, and serve as hubs for adventure and camaraderie. From stunning views to gourmet meals, here are some fun facts that make these huts an essential part of any alpine adventure! 🌄🥾🍲

1️⃣ The first mountain huts were built in the 19th century to support early alpinists and explorers. One of the earliest huts, the Monzino Hut in Italy, was established in 1903.

2️⃣ Some of the highest huts in the Alps are located above 3,000 meters (9,843 feet). For example, the Capanna Margherita on Monte Rosa, Italy, sits at 4,554 meters (14,941 feet), making it the highest hut in Europe.

3️⃣ Many alpine huts are eco-friendly, utilizing solar panels, wind turbines, and water-saving technologies to minimize their environmental impact.

4️⃣ Huts in the Alps often host a diverse range of international hikers and climbers, creating a unique cultural melting pot. Shared meals and communal living foster a sense of camaraderie and friendship among visitors.

5️⃣ Contrary to the rustic image, many alpine huts serve delicious, hearty meals that reflect the local cuisine. You can enjoy regional specialties like Swiss fondue, Italian polenta, or Austrian schnitzel in the dining rooms of these huts.

6️⃣ Positioned strategically along trails, huts offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and valleys. Staying overnight in a hut often means witnessing spectacular sunrises and sunsets.

7️⃣ Many huts are owned and operated by alpine clubs such as the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV), and the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). Membership in these clubs often provides discounts on hut stays.

8️⃣ While some huts are remote and require challenging hikes to reach, others are more accessible, allowing families with children and less experienced hikers to enjoy the alpine hut experience.

The Alta Via 1 (AV1) and the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) are two popular long-distance hiking trails in Europe, offering stunning alpine scenery and challenging terrain. While both trails share some similarities, there are also significant differences between them. Here are some major distinctions:

1️⃣ Location

AV1: Located in the Italian Dolomites, a mountain range in northeastern Italy. The trail passes through the provinces of Belluno, Bolzano, and Trento.

TMB: Circles the Mont Blanc Massif, which spans France, Italy, and Switzerland.

2️⃣ Trail Length

AV1: The trail is approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) long.

TMB: The complete circuit is about 170 kilometers (105 miles).

3️⃣ Terrain and Difficulty

AV1: The trail is known for its challenging and rugged terrain, with steep ascents and descents, via ferratas (protected climbing routes), and exposed sections. It is generally considered to be more challenging than the Tour du Mont Blanc.

TMB: While still demanding, the trail is generally considered to be less technically challenging than the Alta Via 1. It involves a mix of well-maintained paths, alpine meadows, and some rocky sections.

4️⃣ Cultural and Scenic Highlights

AV1: Offers stunning views of the unique Dolomite rock formations and picturesque landscapes. Hikers may encounter traditional alpine villages and experience the distinct culture of the Dolomite region.

TMB: Provides breathtaking views of the Mont Blanc Massif and the surrounding glaciers. The trail also passes through charming mountain villages, allowing hikers to experience the diverse cultures of the Alps.

5️⃣ Crowds

AV1: Generally sees fewer hikers compared to the TMB, providing a more secluded and serene experience (though still relatively busy during high season)

TMB: One of the most popular long-distance hiking trails in Europe, and as a result, it can be more crowded, especially during the peak hiking season.

Both trails offer unique and rewarding experiences, and the choice between them depends on personal preferences, fitness level, and the type of hiking experience you're seeking. To learn more, visit our website!

Doubting whether to use trekking poles on your mountain adventures? Let's settle that debate! These trusty companions offer a world of benefits, especially when navigating the rugged terrains of the mountains:

1️⃣ Enhanced Stability: Trekking poles provide extra points of contact with the ground, significantly improving your stability. This is crucial when tackling steep ascents and descents, preventing slips and falls.

2️⃣ Reduced Joint Impact: With every step, your knees bear a lot of weight. Trekking poles absorb some of this impact, easing the strain on your joints and reducing the risk of injuries.

3️⃣ Energy Conservation: By distributing the workload across your upper body, trekking poles reduce fatigue. You'll find yourself able to hike longer distances and tackle more challenging trails without feeling as tired.

4️⃣ Aid in Uphill Climbs: When ascending steep slopes, trekking poles provide leverage, helping you push yourself upward more easily. This can be a game-changer during demanding uphill climbs.

5️⃣ Help in Descents: Similarly, when descending, trekking poles act as brakes, preventing you from slipping and providing stability on tricky downhill sections.

6️⃣ Multi-Purpose Tool: Trekking poles can be used for various purposes, from testing the depth of water or snow to clearing spider webs from your path. They're versatile companions!

So, if you're on the fence about using trekking poles, take the leap! Your joints will thank you, your stability will improve, and you'll conquer those mountains with ease. Happy hiking! 🌲🌄

Did you know there are over 800 mountain huts scattered across the Alps? 🏔

If you're heading to the Alps later this summer for a hut-to-hut hike, choosing the right pack is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable adventure. Here are some tips to help you make the perfect pick:

1️⃣ Size Matters: Aim for a pack between 24 to 30 liters. Going bigger means you might be overpacking. Keep it light and efficient!

2️⃣ Essential Features: Look for a pack with a sturdy hip belt and sternum strap. Pockets on the hip belt and external access to your water reservoir are lifesavers on the trail.

3️⃣ Find the Fit: Don't just rely on online reviews. Head to your local gear store to try on packs and load them up with weight. Comfort is key!

4️⃣ Support Local: Give back to your community by purchasing from your neighborhood gear store. Plus, you'll get expert advice and support along the way.

Remember, your backpack is an essential piece of gear. Make sure to choose a pack that is comfortable, reliable, and suitable for your needs! 🎒

The Dolomites, a stunning mountain range located in northern Italy, are known for their unique geological features, breathtaking landscapes, and outdoor recreational opportunities. Here are some fun facts about the Dolomites:

🏔️ The Dolomites were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009 for their exceptional beauty, geological significance, and cultural heritage.

🏔️ The Dolomites are renowned for their unique rock formations composed primarily of dolomite, a type of sedimentary rock rich in magnesium and calcium. This gives the mountains their characteristic pale, pinkish hue, especially during sunrise and sunset.

🏔️ The Dolomites are home to some of the most iconic peaks in the Alps, including the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Marmolada (the highest peak in the Dolomites), and the Civetta. Many of these peaks rise above 3,000 meters (9,800 feet) in elevation.

🏔️ The Cinque Torri (Five Towers) are a group of distinctive rock formations in the Dolomites, known for their climbing routes and historical significance during World War I.

🏔️ The Dolomites are famous for their stunning alpenglow, a phenomenon where the mountains glow in shades of pink and orange during sunrise and sunset.

The Dolomites are not only a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts but also a place of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and geological wonder. Whether you're interested in adventure sports or simply want to enjoy the breathtaking vistas, the Dolomites have something for everyone.

🏔️ Planning on hiking a hut-to-hut route in the Alps later this summer? Make sure you go prepared with these 5 essential items!

1️⃣ 24-30L Pack: Your pack is a critical piece of gear, and not something you want to skimp on! A pack between 24-30L is ideal. If you need a pack that is larger than 30L for in-season hut hiking, then you are bringing too much stuff!

2️⃣ Trail Runners/Hiking Boots: Proper hiking footwear can either make or break your hike. Make sure to find footwear that is sturdy and p rovides cushioning, good traction, and stability.

3️⃣ Trekking Poles: Trekking poles provide stability and balance, help distribute the load, and reduce strain/pressure on the lower body. They are perfect for dragging yourself up long ascents and alleviating impact on steep descents.

4️⃣ Sleeping Bag Liner: Mountain huts typically provide guests with bedding; however, the bedding is not washed every day. For this reason, guests are required to bring a sleeping bag liner.

5️⃣ Ear Plugs: Whether you're staying in a dorm with dozens of fellow hikers, or staying in a private room with your friends, chances are someone snores! Bring ear plugs for a quieter sleep so you can feel rested for you hike the next day!

Remember, while there are many things to pack, these five gear pieces are absolute must-haves for an unforgettable hut to hut experience in the Alps!

If you've already completed a hike in the Alps and are looking for a new adventure, we highly suggest bike touring through the Alps! 🚵‍♀️

One of our all-time favourite routes is from Munich to Venice. Beginning on the island of Lindau in Germany, one of three countries bordering Lake Constance, this technically easy mountain bike route will lead you through four border crossings on the very first day: Germany - Austria - Switzerland - Liechtenstein - Switzerland. Despite its three passes, this tour offers comfortable roll-in and roll-out days on the first and last days on enjoyable bike trails with minimal elevation gain or route finding. The spectacular single-track day happens on the second to last day, up high near the third pass. The tour ends with a gelato on the shores of the famous Lake Como in Italy.

Packing light yet smart for a hut to hut adventure in the Alps is key! Here's a quick guide to ensure you're prepared for the journey:

🏔️ Backpack Basics: Opt for a 24-30 liter pack with a sturdy hip belt. Fit matters, so try before you buy.

🏔️ Clothing Choices: Less is more. Prioritize quick-dry fabrics and layering. Avoid cotton. Adjust based on weather forecasts.

🏔️ Toiletry Trimming: Simplify your skincare routine. Stick to essentials like deodorant, toothbrush, and soap. Ditch unnecessary items.

🏔️ Hut Essentials: Don't forget your sleeping bag liner, cash (in the right currency!), and toiletries like hand sanitizer.

🏔️ Food Fundamentals: Plan meals but don't overpack. Grocery stores along the route offer provisions. Pack snacks and a small garbage bag for responsible disposal.

🏔️ Hydration Hacks: Carry at least 2 liters of water per day. Treat stream water if necessary. Consider emergency water treatment tablets.

🏔️ Navigation & Safety: Have the ten essentials, including a paper map, first aid kit, and headlamp. Electronics add weight, so pack wisely.

🏔️ Footwear & Gear: Opt for sturdy hiking shoes or trail running shoes. Bring hiking poles for steep terrain.

Remember, every gram counts! Prioritize essentials, keep your pack light, and enjoy the breathtaking Alps views.

02/04/2024

The mountains look very peaceful from a distance. But with this beauty, comes a little bit of risk. In order, to get the most out of your alpine trips, please be aware of the following safety tips when hiking in the Alps. Keep in mind: Happy adventuring is always linked to safe adventuring!

1️⃣ Signage is more oriented to destinations, rather than trail names or numbers. When hiking, follow signs for the next mountain pass, village, hut, etc., rather than searching for trail names and numbers.

2️⃣ There is an abundance of flowing water, but it needs to be treated. Cows are just about as abundant in the Alps as water. Giardia is not something you want to mess with!

3️⃣ The most dangerous animals you need to worry about are ticks. Make sure to do tick checks and carry tweezers in your first aid kit.

4️⃣ You will be charged for rescue, so make sure you have rescue insurance.

5️⃣ Beware of rockfall when on or near glaciers. Glaciers are rapidly receding in the Alps, which cause safety issues. Do NOT cross below a glacier without seeking local knowledge from a nearby mountain hut or guiding company.

6️⃣ Snowstorms can have a huge impact on visibility. Do not underestimate the impact a snowstorm has on navigation and travel time, regardless of what time of year it is. Snow can happen any time of year.

7️⃣ Summer thunderstorms build slower than in other parts of the world. Once the rain starts, it does not stop for hours. Consult hut staff and local guides on their thoughts about upcoming weather forecasts.

8️⃣ The alpine environment starts at 1800m. Those who spend a lot of time at higher elevations are likely to underestimate conditions at specific elevations in the Alps. 1800m may be the altitude of your tree-covered forests at home, but in the Alps it is the start of the alpine environment and needs to be respected as such.

9️⃣ The emergency phone number for mountain rescue is 112. If you are in danger, hurt, of witness an accident, dial 112.
