Today is the 85th anniversary of the worst pogrom against Jewish people seen in western Europe in centuries. Known at the time as "Kristallnacht" (The Night of the Broken Glass), the November Pogrom began in Munich's Old Town Hall, and is today remembered as a prelude to The Holocaust.

100 years ago today, on the night of 8th November 2023, Adolf Hi**er launched his first attempt to seize power in Germany with an attempted coup. The "Beer Hall Putsch" ended the following day, 9th November, in a bloody gun battle at Munich's Odeonplatz. The subsequent trial was a propaganda triumph for Hi**er and a disaster for German democracy. The events on 8th and 9th November 1923 marked a milestone on Hi**er's rise to power.

The flag of Israel flies from Munich Town Hall in solidarity with the victims of the 7th October pogrom, within sight of the old medieval town hall building where 85 years ago next month the "Night of the Broken Glass," the biggest anti-Jewish pogrom seen in western Europe in centuries and a prelude to the Holocaust, was launched.

Das Hofbräuhaus feiert seinen 434. Geburtstag!
Am 27.September 1589 gab Herzog Wilhelm V. den Bau des Hofbräuhauses in Auftrag.
Von Beginn an wurde hier Bier in hoher Qualität gebraut, dank der „Münchner Bierordnung“ bzw. des Reinheitsgebots.
Das Bier wurde damals allerdings nur zur Versorgung des Wittelsbacher Hofs und dessen Bediensteten gebraut.
Erst viel später, im Jahre 1828, verfügte König Ludwig I. die Gastung: Fortan war es erlaubt, die Bevölkerung im Hofbräuhaus zu bewirten.

405 years ago today, Bohemian Protestants "defenestrated" - threw out of a window - Catholic imperial officials in Prague castle. This incident sparked the Thirty Years War, which resulted in the Swedish amy overwhelming Munich in 1632. The Mariensäule, the distinctive golden statue of the Virgin Mary that can be seen in Marienplatz today, was raised a few years later in thanks for the deliverance of the city from war and occupation.

Ninety years ago today, on 22nd March 1933, the first prisoners arrived in Dachau Concentration Camp, newly opened a short distance from Munich. What followed was 12 years of unremitting terror and mass murder. After the war, what had been the the role model N**i concentration camp became the first major Memorial Site dedicated to educating future generations about that dark time.
