Greetings from the relative beer wasteland of Saxony. There's certainly a few good beers but after 22 years of spending a fair amount of time here due to my wife hailing from the area, I've had them lots of times. So, I was glad that Jose gave me a few not only Franconian beers but new-for-me ones to boot. I'd not managed to have this relatively new seemingly regular seasonal from Brauerei Hönig. The Tiefenellern local generally is in the shadow of its more noted neighbors but it's a great traditional one nonetheless. Sadly, they've forsaken gravity dispense but it appears the beers are more consistent and this lightly smoky Bock is no exception. Thanks for the early Christmas gift.

Scenically situated on the Panoramaweg, this Steigerwald stalwart brews some of the driest beers in Franconia. It doesn't get much more traditional than this one utilizing open fermentation. While the Biergarten is a lovely oasis offering traditional Brotzeit in the warmer months, a visit in winter brings you to an at first less than warm welcome. Once you settle in and show your obvious enjoyment of their beer, the wiry matron becomes less stern. It's very much a locals' haunt which is fairly easy to reach by bus from Bamberg. My visit last week was to resample their lovely Dunkel, one of the very best dark beers in the region and it was every bit as good as my first visit many years ago. This place gets lost in the fray and perhaps that's a good thing.
