Fast on the heels of the Eiche Anstich at Schlenkerla, I made a mad dash for the bus and train to Lichtenfels for the Lippert Bockanstich. It was a more interesting Hellerbock than most but the Eiche is a tough act to follow.

Greetings from Bockbieranstich 21, Schlenkerla Eiche. I arrived ten minutes prior to opening, only to find a handful of hopefuls awaiting the 1st Advent tapping of the renowned Rauch Doppelbock. Notoriously brewed with self-kilned malt over oak, this luscious richly malty Bock features a a gorgeous subdued smoky note. An unplanned and no less wonderfully pleasant meet up with Ryan Mowbray was an added bonus.

It took me over 20 years to get this beer but it was worth the wait, aided by finding out about their Anstich last minute and a Franziskaner monk presiding over the traditional occasion. A free gravity dispense liter sure didn't hurt. Served in a ceramic Krug with a protruding rocky head and caramel nose, the richly malty Doppelbock did not disappoint. It's a wonderful place to spend a night with hiking and biking routes in abundance.

Stopped in the Pelikan Best of Bock event last night for a couple of the eight Bocks available gravity dispense at their annual event. Both Hölzlein and Gänstaller were excellent. Tonight we have a reservation for dinner so enjoying a few more seated.

About five weeks ago I had the pleasure of trying the Kreisla 36 collaboration between four of the five breweries (Hummel, Göller, Höhn & Drei Kronen) in one of the 36 municipalities (Memmelsdorf) of Bamberg county. It was on tap at Brauerei Hummel in Merkendorf, where it was physically brewed. I picked up a bottle but hadn't had a chance to drink it until today. It's a good as I'd remembered and well worth making your way out there for. If not, be sure to pick up a bottle or two. I wish I'd bought more.
