Despite Brauerei Büttner's cult-like popularity, most visitors to Bamberg don't make the effort to get out to relatively near Untergereuth. I'll admit to previously being an infrequent guest myself due to what seemed shotty public transportation but we found a a nice route from Debring this past summer and used it again yesterday to take advantage of a sunny winter day. It was already bustling not long after opening and every table was reserved for dinner. The beer was in top form and illustrates as well as any the difference between Franconian Vollbier and Munich Helles: hops. That's a simplification but certainly a big factor. I hadn't really thought about it as on previous visits, we'd sat in the courtyard drinking from a Steinkrug. Jose had recently sent me a photo from his last visit and I was keen to return. Thankfully, my wife loves walking and the Büttner beer. It's a very local pub and she got a kick out of a group of older ladies at our table, animatedly enjoying their beer and each other's company. We split an excellent plate of house-made cold meats washed down with quite a few beers. We missed our planned bus back from Debring but with Brauerei Müller virtually at the bus stop, it's not such a bad thing. With fairly frequent buses and a less than an hour hike, it's a beer worth the walk and one we plan on going to a lot more often.

Spring may be around the corner but bone-chilling weather's still here. Time to tuck into a Winter Zwickel Bier.

Friday's here. Time for a beer. I posted about the Schrüfer Dunkles Vollbier on tap a month or so ago but recently got a chance to try the bottled version and gorgeous it was. Reportedly the old swing top bottles' days are numbered as they move bottling to another brewery. The old system is a museum piece and as is often the case, it's not cost effective to replace it. I'm sure the quality will remain high but you gotta love the look of the old ones.

It's been a bit of a dreary stretch of weather in Munich so I'm dusting off an outing from Beer Hiking Bavaria. This simple but beautiful walk from the mountain lake, Schliersee to the home of the Hopf brewery in Miesbach is one I look forward to redoing soon. If you haven't made your way to this lovely corner of Bavaria, you should put it on your beer bucket list. Details in my blog below or pick up a copy of my book for a turn by turn description.

Looking for Mr. Good Beer finally reaches 1300, a month later than hoped for but in grand fashion. Thanks to Jose for this lovely Heller Doppelbock from Kesselring, a brewery we both love. Hopped with Solero, Spalter Select and Perle, it has passion fruit in both the nose and balanced palate without succumbing to an overly Craft(y) offering. You'll have to scroll down quite a bit or just use the search box on Beerwanderers.

Sad to read today of the coming closure of Lang-Bräu in Schönbrunn. While perhaps not in most people's top 20, it is nonetheless a solid brewery with a large range and fair following. Their pub restaurant had super food as well. It was a favorite lunch stop on our way home to Munich from Saxony. They generally had something different on tap each visit. It appears that while financially stable, they needed to invest too much money in updating to make it a reasonable choice. If you'd like to see why you might want to check it out before May 31st, enjoy my review below.

Live from Brauerei Uerige’s Sticke tapping; it’s taken me 25 years since my first trip to the Altbier breweries in Düsseldorf to finally make it to this twice a year event. Similar to Bock beer in being stronger versions of their flagship counterparts, they differ in the very limited time they’re available, generally one day. Once a secretive thank you to loyal patrons, it’s now well-publicized to be the third Tuesdays in January and October. Other breweries in town have similar events on different dates but Uerige's is the most renowned. I learned about it in such depth from the late Fred Waltman who was a pioneer in the Franconian beer scene as well as any beer culture epicenters. He went every year with a group infamously called the Sticke Warriors. I was invited to join a few times and it’s one of my beery regrets that I failed to have not only a Sticke with him but any beer. So, I’m here today a few years late but to make sure I made it before it was indeed too late.

Walking through the ornate metal doors I was immediately transported to 1997, wooden barrels abound and tiles of proverbs dot the standing area I once stood at awaiting the forthcoming snacks. It’s very cold. I’m not sure it’s any warmer than outside but atmosphere and rich beer keeps me within the labyrinth of Uerige.

The richly malty Sticke is dark amber and soft despite “merely from the tank.” In other scenarios, this would be something to be heralded rather than hiden. I can attest that the beer remains soft and it would take a very refined palate to discern the differences. That said, the ritualistic changing of the barrels is missed by even this guy who was here a few times a couple of decades ago. I can only imagine the lament of the locals who have grown up to the sound of the wooden pallet hitting the brass taps. All that said, this is a lovely beer in an incredibly historic and atmospheric pub.

Why Beer Wanderers

I plan this as a resource of information about the beer, food and trails of Bavaria, and in particular the northern part known as Franconia. If the ideas don’t seem self-explanatory enough or if you just want a local guide to do all the planning, reserving of accommodation and getting you on the right trails, to the best breweries and making sure you order (or at least know about) the local delicacies, then please feel free to contact me.
