The Thirsty Historian - Custom Experiences in Munich & Bavaria

The Thirsty Historian - Custom Experiences in Munich & Bavaria We organize the best cultural experiences possible in Munich, Bavaria and Central Europe!
(29)

The Thirsty Historian was an idea created by two guys who have a passion for history while at the same time drinking one of their favorite brews, which they often find themselves doing. Levi is from the Midwest of the United States and with the help of his well-traveled, beer-loving family and his German roots, he developed a taste for the most delicious beers available to him no matter where life

takes him. After many journeys across Europe, Levi has found himself settled and loving life in Munich, Germany for the past 14 years. Quickly realizing that teaching English was not nearly as fun as explaining history and having a delicious drink while doing it, he started researching and conducting tours in 2008 and has hosted thousands of customers in the city and area related to Munich history, beer and brewing in Bavaria with a local company and privately. He quickly developed a taste for the finest and some of the oldest beers available worldwide and, adding local stories and culture, is now ready to share that with you. John lives in The San Francisco Bay Area/ Silicon Valley, California and has traveled countless times to Europe in the search for the finest local and cultural experiences together with great company and good drinks. Visiting small and large Breweries alike, he has found many amazing beers and great people. Both of us have found that not much is better than being in a great historical location with the best company and fantastic local food and beer. We find that the Bavarian region in south Germany has everything needed to fulfill these requirements. We started The Thirsty Historian based on our love of beer, and there's place better to discover beer the way it was originally intended than in Bavaria. The beer purity laws have kept the oldest beers here as authentic and delicious as the day the beers were first tasted. Some of the beers we introduce you to are over 700 years old (they do make fresh batches though).

We had a fun time watching the Germany/Hungary match last night at Paulaner am Nockherberg! They had a specialty beer made at their own microbrewery for the tournament served in ceramic liter mugs!

Where did you watch the match and what German beer did you have? 😁🍻

Day 3 of adventures with our group!

We traveled south to the Bavarian Alps 🏔 Our morning started with a train ride to Lake Schliersee followed by a picturesque hike up to the Schliersbergalm biergarten! After a small break, we took an alpine slide down the mountain side and trained back to Munich in time for Frühlingsfest night #2 at the Augustiner Festhalle Bayernland🍻

Was an incredible day to close out our Bavarian adventure!

Up Next: 🇮🇹 Italy 🇮🇹

Day 2 group tour continued!

We had a beautiful evening at the Hippodrom tent at Munich’s Frühlingsfest. After a delicious 3 course meal, the tables were quickly cleared, lights dimmed and everybody got up on the benches to dance all night to the live music!

It was a perfect feeling of Bavarian gemütlichkeit with the amazing atmosphere!

Day 2 with the Transylvania University group!

We started the day off with some medieval history and education with a private tour of the Andechs monastery brewery from 1455. It included a guided tour of the brewery and tasting of multiple beers before a visit to the beautiful hilltop buildings and lunch at the local Bräustüberl.

After this visit we took a stroll along the beautiful Lake Ammersee before heading back to Munich for a Frühlingsfest beer tent night!

For 10 days we will be with this amazing group from Transylvania university in Kentucky, USA! We are taking al 30 of them around Munich, the Bavarian Alps and to Venice, Florence and Bologna.

They’ve been a blast to take around so far! 😁🍻

Here are some photos from the airport welcome with Prosecco, beer hall dinner evening with our own wooden barrels of beer and a late night city walk tour on day 1.

Guten Morgen from Munich! We are about to meet a large tour group that we will be taking around Bavaria and Italy for the next 10 days.

Before every tour we always check on any changes in the area. There’s often new construction or some new pop-up shops that we haven’t seen.

Of course, we need to stop by a Biergarten or two to make sure the beer and atmosphere is still great!

We always love passing by the historic sites we’ve seen so many times over the years. They never get old!

Paulaner Bräuhaus in München! Over the years we've been able to enjoy unforgettable experiences here with so many people and are excited to create more! Great brewery, great bier, and great atmosphere! We are here so often we achieved a Stammtisch (regulars table) and a bierkrug locker! 🍻

1889 is when the brewery began as Thomasbräu. Paulaner merged with the brewery in 1928. The name Paulaner-Thomasbräu (which is seen on the bierkrug) was used until 1994 and then became solely Paulaner!

The bier brewed here is not available anywhere else, so it is a one of kind and the bier flight samples are quite generous! 🍻

Stay Thirsty for History!

Today was the Day of German Beer! On April 23, 1516, the Bavarian Beer Purity Laws or Reinheitsgebot was passed in Ingolstadt.

This is oldest food law in the world still used today! Originally, only the purest barley malt, water and hops were allowed in the brews. With only a few changes since then, most local breweries still strictly stick to this law of brewing and you will find it on almost every beer label in Bavaria.

Normally we would be celebrating at the world’s oldest brewery at Weihenstephan or at the free beer fountain in Munich, but the festivities were cancelled because of our wintery weather this year… 😔 We still had some great beers in honor of this beer law and tradition.

Which beer brewed according to the Reinheitsgebot is your favorite?

Sampling some tasty beers made at the Starkenberg Castle on a mountainside in the Austrian Alps. 😁🍻

In addition to some great brews and food with some amazing views, they offer special brewery tours where you can get a closer view of brewing, dine like a king in the Knight’s Hall and possibly soak in one of their beer spas!

It was a beautiful night walking in Munich’s old town recently. The Hofbräuhaus is always such an iconic sight and a warm stop to take in some great drinks, atmosphere and company!

There are still around 3,500 regulars with their own Stammtisch, or regular’s table, at this iconic beer hall.

They mostly come every week with their friends and family, often in their best lederhosen and dirndls, unlock their ceramic liter mug from one of the hundreds of mug lockers and enjoy some Bavarian Gemütlichkeit with others.

This past weekend we enjoyed a pretty "cool" overnight stay in an igloo at Iglu-Dorf in Kühtai, Austria 😎 We first enjoyed live music and warm drinks with a fun group of guests! We toured the igloos and village. Each igloo had a different look with unique snow art designed by hand and could sleep 2 to 5 people.

Once the sun started to set, we then ventured on a snowshoe hike. The evening finished with a fondue dinner and a relaxing sauna under the stars!

In the morning, we were greeted with a coffee/tea delivery to our igloo cabin which was followed by a hearty breakfast.

These amazing works of art can be located at locations within just 3 hours from Munich by car. We would definitely recommend adding this to your travel experience here with us in the Winter/Early Spring season!

Prost! 🧊🍺🧊
