Tip pt 2: Let’s talk about restaurant culture here & things you should know before eating out in Europe.
1️⃣Waiters get paid a living wage here. This means they aren’t as tip driven. This DOESN’T mean you shouldn’t tip them (Google the country you’re going to for the percentage), but it does mean that they aren’t typically as worried about turning tables. They expect that you will want a customary leisurely dinner. So if you want fast food, you need to go to a food truck, stall, or a chain restaurant .
2️⃣This also means that waiters expect you’ll want to be mostly left alone. It’s considered a courtesy. Understand that you’ll be expected to waive a waiter down if you need anything after they’ve served you. You’ll also be expected to waive them down to get your check. I’ve seen one too many angry US tourists because they can’t understand why the waiter isn’t bringing the check.
3️⃣In some countries in Europe you’ll be charged a table fee. For example, in Italy, if you sit down at one of their cafes to drink your coffee, you’ll most likely have an extra fee on your bill.
4️⃣Most countries in Europe eat dinner late. Certain restaurants in Spain don’t even open until 8 or 9 at night. Be sure to check opening hours and be aware of this.
5️⃣Don’t expect water with your meal without paying for it. This varies from country to country. Some are willing to give you tap water; some will tell you they “don’t have it”. In places like Paris sometimes it will cost you more for a bottle of water at dinner than for a glass of wine.
6️⃣Make reservations! At a sit-down restaurant, Europeans rarely have table wait lists. They will simply tell you they are fully booked. If you see empty tables when they say that, it’s because they block off large chunks of time for their reserved tables. To get into the better places, you’ll need to book ahead, even on a weekday during tourist season.
7️⃣ Do at least a little bit of researching what the higher rated restaurants are. Just because it’s in Europe doesn’t mean it’s delicious. In Popular tourist spots, you’ll find plenty of average food.

The airlines won’t tell you about this law in Europe. Here’s what you NEED TO KNOW about European flights: Over the weekend, I had a delayed flight that resulted in a missed connection, that resulted in an extra day of trying to get back to Germany. Thankfully I was already aware of the rules here in Europe on delayed flights and will be receiving up to €600 ($645) because of it even though the airline put me up in a hotel. . HERE’S THE HEADLINE: IF YOU ARE FLYING ON AN EU OR UK AIRLINE OR IF YOU ARE LEAVING THE EU AND YOUR FLIGHT IS DELAYED BY 3+ HOURS (except in bad weather) OR IF YOUR BAGGAGE WAS DAMAGED, BOTH THE EUROPEAN UNION AND THE U.K. HAVE LAWS ENTITLING YOU TO COMPENSATION. . FOR +3 HOUR LATE FLIGHTS: Compensation will vary based on variables like how far you were traveling, how long you were delayed, and whether or not the airline took care of your needs during the delay. However, even if they put you up in a hotel, you’re still entitled to compensation. They don’t tell you this, but it’s the law for you to be able to claim compensation. Simply Google your airline and delay compensation and you should be able to find an online form. You can also call your airline. Be sure to keep all your ticket stubs or screenshots of your mobile ticket. FOR DAMAGED BAGGAGE: Go directly to the airline counter if you see your baggage is damaged in any way upon arrival. They will direct you on how to file a claim and you can receive money to purchase a new piece of luggage. With some airlines you can file an online claim. You MUST file this claim within three days of the flight it was damaged on. . Now you know! This truly can add up. My sister’s family of 5 had major delays leaving Europe and ended up getting €3.000 back (over $3,200). I pays to know these laws.
