Found this magnificent lad down in Engelbecken, a former part of the Berlin Wall 'death strip' just over the Mitte side of the border with Kreuzberg.

The apartments on the left are pre-War, mostly turn of the century tenements which end up in the west and the apartments on the right are post-unification, built in what used to be east Berlin

Stumbled across this mural by .xlf on a quiet Prenzlauerberg street. Big fan of this one - it looks a bit like Jack Kirby's more out-there stuff for DC comics in the 70s 🙃

The Gartenstrasse entrance to Nordbahnhof station was sealed off shortly after the construction of the Berlin Wall. Nordbahnhof subsequently became a 'ghost station' whereby trains originating in west Berlin could travel through without stopping. One of the guard towers at the Wall can be seen in the background.

I've visited the roof and dome of the Reichstag dozens of times over the years but there are still details that I missed until now. Damage from the final battle for the building (and Berlin) in 1945 is visible all over the outside of the structure but these bullet holes are in the inside facing walls.

The German Historical Museum can be found in the former Zeughaus, or arsenal, of Prussia. The building was originally finished in 1706, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in the historical centre.

In March 1943, a military officer named Rudolf von Gersdorff planned to assassinate Adolf Hi**er here, but was foiled by the N**i dictator changing his plans at the last minute.

Urban combat manoeuvres by the US military in Kreuzberg, 1980.

The crumbling, neglected corner of west Berlin was seen by the US authorities as an ideal place to run exercises. The local population were also less likely to complain (or indeed be listened to) than the more bourgeois inhabitants of other west Berlin districts.

There was a couple from Taiwan on a tour I gave for over 10 years ago. The guy didn't speak much English but was really into all the street art in Kreuzberg. At the end, his girlfriend told me that he was a street artist called and gave me a couple of postcards with his stuff on them. Through her, he explained that he always wanted to paint on the Berlin Wall. About 2 days later, I passed this mural that he'd done on the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining section of the wall left in Berlin.

On this day in German history: Sophie and Hans Scholl were murdered by the N**is. The siblings were members of the White Rose - a group of non-violent activists.

Their actions were far from typical of the period and should be remembered as such. The post-war myth that everyone seemed to have been part of the resistance was largely exactly that - a myth. It's also worth bearing in mind, however, that the Scholls were killed largely for the act of printing leaflets against the dictatorship, proving that even relative minor acts of defiance against the n**i state were usually met with extreme violence.

The interior of the DZ Bank on Pariser Platz.

Architect Frank Gehry is known / notorious for flamboyant buildings but most people would never guess that this building was a Gehry until they stepped inside. The main entrance faces the Brandenburg Gate, and it's rumoured that the architect was told to rein things in a bit so as not to distract from the gate.

A room in the former Stasi prison at Hohenschönhausen. Suspects arrested by the secret police of East Germany/ GDR would, after a sometimes protracted period of interrogation, be brought here for sentencing. A judge would be sat in a separate room - partly visible through the bars on the left.

Around 45,000 people would come through this facility with the overwhelming majority subsequently transferred to more 'traditional' prisons to serve out their sentences.

The wire that can be seen around the cell door ran throughout the entire cell block. If the guards broke the connection at any point, an alarm would sound.

Mural for Attila Murat Aydın, MC, graffiti writer and founder of the now defunct Kreuzberg gang '36 Boys'. Known as Maxim, he also founded one of the first Turkish language hip-hop crews, 'Islamic Force' whose lyrics reflected the experience of the Turkish gastarbeiters (guest workers) and their descendents. More than 50 years after the first guest workers arrived, the German state still refuses to give them citizenship unless they renounce their Turkish nationality.

In 2003 Maxim was murdered by an elderly German man who successfully argued on appeal that he felt threatened by Aydin intervening during an argument between the man and Aydin's wife.
