Gilleleje virtual tour Sunday Aug 9
Sunday Aug 9, 1pm EST - Virtual Jewish Rescue Tour from Gilleleje fishing village,
* * * A story of heroes and disaster during WW2 * * *
-Some were rescued
-some got caught
-Some children were hidden from the Nazis
SUNDAY AUG 9, 1PM EST - directly from this Jewish Copenhagen page
During a few days in October 1943, 1,300 Danish Jews managed to escape to Sweden on fishing boats from Gilleleje fishing village.On Oct 6, 1943, about 100 Jews hiding in the loft of the Gilleleje Church, were caught by the Nazis, and deported to Theresienstadt concentration camp near Prague.
In several cases, desperate Jewish parents chose to hand over their infants or young children to local families, who took care of them for the rest of the war. The touching story of the hidden Jewish children will also be told.
We will follow in the footsteps of these dramatic events based on the memorial plaques laid in 2013. This project was all about commemorating the citizens of the town of Gilleleje for the crucial importance of the rescue of the Danish Jews.
Large parts of the city were activated to help the Jews and private homes, stables as well as the church loft, were taken into use to hide the many Danish Jews.
