At Quantum Sails, we have worked to structure our sailmaking processes into a circular economy. This framework for our production and operations requires us to think about the environment at every step:

🌎Quantum sails are designed to last. Whether we are talking about racing, cruising, or our EcoSeries sails, they are all made with performance and endurance in mind.

🌎They are also made in a way that makes them easy to repair. We encourage our customers to take care of their sails and use our maintenance services before buying a brand-new sail when the old one is still in usable condition. Once the first owners are ready to replace their sails, we can collect them and give them to another sailor.

🌎If the sail is no longer usable, some companies accept donated sails to be made into bags and other accessories. Sail hardware can also be removed and reused on a new sail.

🌎The last step in creating a circular economy is sail recycling, a process which is still developing. Quantum is collaborating with companies that are developing ways to recycle sails.

There is still much to be done for the sailmaking industry to achieve a fully circular economy. A standardized recycling process and continued improvements to sail design with sustainability in mind would drastically decrease both the amount of waste produced and raw materials needed. We at Quantum see these opportunities for improvement and will continue to work toward a more sustainable process so that future generations can sail in a clean and healthy environment.

Cruising boats have a tendency to struggle in light winds. Beam, wetted surface, shallow draft, smaller rigs all make it more difficult. We also have to remember that we are carrying our house around with us.
👉Here are a few things to consider when looking to improve your light-wind sailing technique:
- Specialty sails: You are going to need to look at your sail inventory. Generally speaking, we recommend that for the one primary furling headsail you leave up all the time that you go as small as possible. For the days when you need the extra sail area, a specialty reaching sail, or Code Zero, will be a huge asset. They come in all sizes and flavors, so you need to do some homework to figure what is best for your rig proportions and angles you want to optimize for. For broader angles there is no substitute for an asymmetrical spinnaker.
- Upwind: Going upwind in light air is hard. The reality is that most cruising boats will struggle, and the tacking angles will be wide. The thing to keep in mind is not to force it. Speed first, and then try to point. Start at a close reach and gradually trim sails in ever so slowly.
- Reaching: This is the easiest point of sail to generate speed in light air. From a close to a beam reach you will generate maximum power. The key is to make sure sails are not over-trimmed. Ease until they luff and trim just enough to take the luff out. For the headsail use the telltales as a guide. Trim until they stream straight aft.
- Downwind: The first thing you have to recognize is that you really can’t sail straight downwind in light air. Heading up is the only way to generate the apparent wind that we need to fill our sails.

⛵️If you have the right tools and a little patience, light-air sailing can be a blast even when you are carrying your home with you!

Got little ones onboard? One of the best ways to keep them happy and involved is by giving them a task! They can be awesome at spotting traffic, coiling lines, or even helping with sail trim. It’s all hands on deck, no matter the size!

Q. Do you store sails? What other services do your lofts offer?

Yes, many of our lofts offer sail storage for a small fee. Call your local loft to check for availability and rates. We also offer sail removal and installation services, sail pickup, and drop-off to many nearby marinas. We even have drop boxes in some areas. Sail washing to get rid of dirt, mold, or mildew is also available. If your sail needs a shape re-furbish, recuts are also an option.

Contact your service consultant today, and we'll schedule a pickup at your local marina. Storage is not available at all lofts, so please contact your local loft for availability.

Cruising Year Round - Sailors often fall into two camps. Fair weather sailors chase perfect sunny days and their calm waters and blue skies. And there are sailors who can’t miss a day on the water, no matter the conditions. Sun, rain, snow, big breeze, total glass – they’ll take it all. Embrace the cold with some tips to enjoy sailing as the temperatures drop.

Stay dry: Staying as dry as possible in colder temperatures will make the sailing much more pleasant. Once you’re wet, you’ll get cold quickly, and it’s hard to dry out and warm up again. If you’re planning a cold-weather sail, invest in good outerwear and foul-weather gear.

Hot food and drink: Consuming hot food and beverages is just what you need to warm up from the inside out. There’s nothing better than a hot coffee, tea, or whatever warm beverage you prefer after a long day of cold sailing. Many cruising boats have fully functional galleys, so don’t be afraid to turn on the gimbaled stove and make yourself a hot meal.

Stay active: Actively sailing the boat helps to keep you warm. Adjust the sail trim every now and then and rotate drivers to get different people on the wheel or tiller.

Ask/Tell your friends: If it’s your first time embarking on a winter sailing adventure, ask friends about their experiences or bring one of them along for an extra set of hands. At minimum, communicate your sailing plans with a reliable friend and check in with them if you’re going offshore or somewhere without service. Safety is paramount at all times, but this is particularly true in colder weather.

Wear layers: The layered approach is most helpful when you’re constantly adding and removing layers based on changing conditions. Start with moisture-wicking base layers and build from there. Layers to have on hand include fleeces, down vests, lightweight down jackets, wool socks, and foul-weather gear. It’s always great to have a wool sweater just in case. Wool keeps you warm even when wet, blocks the cold due to its thickness, and is comfier and cozier than some of the other options.
