Today we celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous People, where we honour the 476 million Indigenous peoples who, despite being just 5% of the global population, preserve 5,000 unique cultures and speak most of the world's 7,000 languages. Their rights, cultures, and lands have faced ongoing challenges, yet they continue to fight for recognition and protection.

This Arctic season, in addition to visiting communities in Greenland, we will also visit the communities of Iqaluit and Pangnirtung in Nunavut, Canada. Like Greenland, the majority of residents of Nunavut are Inuit. While there are some slight linguistic and cultural differences between Nunavut and Greenland, Inuit values of sharing, respect for elders, deep connection to ancestral land, and community cooperation are common to both.

Inuktitut (spoken in Nunavut) and Kalaallisut (spoken in West Greenland) are closely related languages, both part of the Inuit-Yupik-Unangan language family, although Inuktitut in Nunavut is written using a unique syllabic writing system, while Kalaallisut uses the Roman alphabet. The cultural and familial bonds between Inuit in Greenland and Nunavut have recently been further strengthened by the newly revived - and much anticipated - flight route between Nuuk, Greenland, and Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Today, we celebrate World Nature Conservation Day—a worldwide event focused on preserving our environment and natural resources. This critical day highlights the necessity of protecting our planet and its diverse ecosystems for the benefit of both current and future generations 🙏🏼

On our ships, we have our three core principles of "reuse, reduce, recycle" - by cutting out single-use plastics and offering paper cups and refillable water bottles for purchase. Besides that, we provide recycling options in cabins and public areas to create a more sustainable voyage ♻️

On land, we always encourage our guests to leave no trace or even to participate in specific cleanup events, such as the Clean Up Svalbard organisation. In Svalbard, guests can help clean up the landing sites by using the cleanup bags provided and picking up any debris they find. Your efforts ensure the waste is properly disposed of back in Longyearbyen.

Did you know that polar bears can travel more than 1,000 km in one season? 👀 Polar bears are natural wanderers, recognized for their slow, deliberate pace. They typically walk at a speed of about 5-6 km per hour. However, females with small cubs move more slowly, averaging around 2.5-4 km per hour.

During our season in Svalbard, we have been so lucky to observe the King of the Arctic several times in the wild 🐻‍❄️

If you have ever dreamed of seeing a polar bear, join us on our Svalbard voyages in 2025. Visit our website for more details and to request a quote.

Happy World Orca Day! 🐋🌊

Today, we celebrate the magnificent orca, an iconic species that plays a crucial role in our oceans. These fascinating creatures are not only the top predators of the sea but also vital to maintaining marine ecosystems. Also known as keystone species, orcas help keep the balance of ocean life, and as indicator species, they reveal the health of our marine environments.

The mission of this day is to raise awareness of the threats orcas face in the wild and work together to increase their protection. Together, we can make waves for orca conservation! 🙏🏼

Today, we celebrate World Albatross Day.
Established in 2020, this day raises awareness about the conservation crisis facing these majestic seabirds. It's also the anniversary of the ACAP treaty, which was formed to protect albatrosses and petrels from threats like fisheries.

This year, we're focusing on "Plastic Pollution" and how it impacts our feathered friends.

At Albatros Expeditions, we feel honoured to have this wonderful bird as part of our brand - and we get excited every time we spot an Albatross in the Antarctic region ❄️ Our guests are most likely to see black-browed, wandering and sooty albatross on our voyages. If they go to the Falklands and South Georgia, they will hopefully be able to visit nesting colonies 🤩

Let's join together to protect these incredible creatures from the dangers of climate change and pollution! 🙏🏼

Today we continue our CSR series, by presenting you the POLARSKOLEN. At Albatros Expeditions we are proud to support this organisation during the current Arctic season.

Polarskolen, founded in 2014 by Gregers Gjersøe, became a non-profit in 2017 to educate Danish students and the public about Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and the Arctic. The organization, run by an unpaid board of nine members, provides free, engaging teaching materials and resources to combat stereotypes and promote understanding of these modern societies.

Sailed through the wild, magnificent, and untouched islands of the North Atlantic with our state-of-the-art vessel, the Ocean Albatros! 🌊✨ Our 9-day springtime expedition from Aberdeen to Reykjavík took us to wondrous destinations in Scotland, the Faroe Islands, and Iceland.

Starting in Aberdeen, we marveled at Kirkwall's ancient Neolithic sites and the stunning cliffs of Orkney. Shetland’s cozy Lerwick and the bird colonies of the Isle of Noss left us in awe. Tórshavn and Klaksvik in the Faroe Islands enchanted us with their Norse heritage and rugged beauty.

Across the North Atlantic, we scouted for whales and wildlife, landing in Iceland’s picturesque Eskifjörður, witnessing Surtsey’s volcanic marvel, and exploring Heimaey’s dramatic history. Finally, we reached the vibrant capital of Reykjavík.

05/06/2024

Every year on June 5th, we come together to celebrate World Environment Day (WED), a day dedicated to raising awareness and taking action for the protection of our precious environment. Supported by NGOs, businesses, governments, and the United Nations, WED is our global call to make a positive impact on our planet 🌎

At Albatros Expeditions, we are committed to protecting the Arctic environment. When exploring the Arctic, we ensure to leave no trace by not leaving litter behind, avoiding engravings on rocks or buildings, and not rearranging natural features. We also take care to protect flora and vegetation by watching where we step and avoiding plant beds and flowers 🌿

Moreover, we encourage everyone to leave the Arctic as it is, respecting cultural remains and natural items like stones, bones, and driftwood. All flora is protected, and we ask that no flowers or plants are picked.

Together, we can make a difference. Let’s celebrate World Environment Day by committing to these practices and protecting the incredible Arctic environment 🙏🏼

Our fleet, the Ocean Albatros and Ocean Victory, are two of the world's most sustainable cruise ships. These state-of-the-art vessels reduce CO2 emissions by 60% compared to similar ships, thanks to revolutionary advances in shipbuilding ⛴️

The vessel’s drive shafts run at a fixed number of rotations per minute, while the vessel’s speed is regulated by the pitch of the propeller blades, thereby avoiding violent changes in acceleration (and therefore fuel consumption).

The most visible feature however is the special, inverted X-Bow. Designed for rough weather, this unique design allows the vessel to cut through waves, rather than displacing water, drastically reducing drag. With these technologies, we drastically cut fuel consumption to 10-12 metric tons per day, leading the way in sustainable cruising 🙏🏼

The christening of our newest expedition vessel, Ocean Albatros in our “home-city”, Copenhagen, Denmark, marked the beginning of our Arctic season for 2024. We kicked off with the Vikings of the North Sea voyage, a special journey from Copenhagen to Aberdeen, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Our adventure began in Skagen, a picturesque town at the northern tip of Denmark, renowned for its artists' colony 🎨. From there, we sailed to Haugesund, Norway, the final resting place of Harald Fairhair, the first Viking king.

Next, we explored the Shetland Islands in Scotland, where Viking Jarls once ruled, blending Norse heritage with Scottish tradition 🏰. Our journey continued to the Orkney Islands, home to ancient sites like the Ring of Brodgar and Skara Brae.

After five days immersed in Viking history, we reached our final port of call, Aberdeen, welcomed by its majestic granite cityscape. Now, we're eagerly anticipating more thrilling voyages to Iceland, Svalbard, Greenland, and finally, Canada later this season 🤩

Happy World Penguin Day! 🐧 Today, we celebrate these amazing creatures and raise awareness about their unique adaptations and conservation challenges.

Did you know that penguins are expert swimmers, diving up to 200m (and sometimes even 500m!) deep in search of food? Their wings have evolved into flippers, perfect for navigating the icy waters of Antarctica and beyond 🌊

From the towering emperor penguin to the petite little blue penguin, these birds come in all shapes and sizes, each with its own remarkable traits. Sadly, many penguin species face threats like habitat loss, overfishing, and climate change, which endanger their populations.

We are curious - which one is your favourite type of penguin? 🤩
