“I wish I could give the star back already”

Michelin stars come with all sorts of extra work. And in the case of a small street side eatery in Bangkok’s old town, the work load, the publicity and the sudden queues of up to two hours to be seated are just not ingredients that match the wonderfully down to earth food.

People passing by Maha Chai Road, almost on the corner of Soi Samran Rat in the Phra Nakhon area of Bangkok, might be startled by the crowd snaking down the footpath around an impromptu assembly of plastic tables. On Dec 23, Bangkok will host its first Bangkokgay-festival gay sports day in nearly a decade. It's a family-friendly event with no alcohol but lots of activities. And the icing on the gay? A molam band, Siang Khaen, which will shake your hips and mind like nothing else on your trip to Thailand. Be gay for a day, or straight as ever, and wander off into the enticing world of Mo Lam music. At the National Stadium, right next to your steroid shopping indulgence at Siam Square.

On Dec 23, the Bangkok gay community is taking over National Stadium for a sports day and pride parade. Bangkok Gay Festival 2017 is organized by Bangkokgay, who are claiming the event as "the world's first gay sports day" to take place in a real stadium.

Michelin Guide dropped by the Thai capital recently. And they didn’t just award jacket’n tie experiences with stars and mouthwatering applause. In fact, you may have a 25 USD crab omelette only and feel like a foodie on tour of Thai street food.
Personally I find Bo.lan one of the best of the Michelin starred restaurants if you want Thai food that’s both authentic and different.
Need directions? Just ask.

Jay Fai’s shophouse, known for her crab omelette, is one of 17 restaurants awarded prestigious stars in listing for Thai capital

Thai beaches will be smoke free soon. A survey showing up to 138.000 cigarette butts on every 2.5 km stretch of Thai beach has prompted authorities to ban smoking on the kingdom’s pretty beaches. A fine of up to 100.000 Baht is awaiting beach goers who light up.
The idea is part of a number of initiatives that are supposed to help keep Thailand’s beaches and seas clean. In this case may I suggest banning plastic bags from Thai beaches too! That would be thaiwise. Remains to be seen how the law will be upheld.

This used to be my neighborhood. It still looks much the same only the global taste has entered selected shophouses. And the conversion is a great thing for travellers on the lookout for local-local experiences. The video makes it all look a bit more fancy than it really is, and that's somewhat the glory of Charoen Krung Road in Bangkok. It stays true to its original profile but manages to squeeze in a bit of the modern, global taste. Go visit when you hit the Thai capital. And if you feel it is still a bit of a maze finding you way just ask. I will be happy to provide my expert advice - here or at www.thaiwise.dk

Bangkok voted world's top long-haul stopover destination by some funny survey. Bangkok is indeed a wonderful and exciting stopover, but this English survey is not made by people on the ground.

The average total expenses for three days in Bangkok were about £317 (13,700 baht), the survey said. You can survive on much less, I will claim. According to the the survey, a three-course meal with wine is cheapest in Tokyo, while the "same meal" will set you back £88 in Bangkok. What???

This is simply not true.

The point is: There is a lot of desktop researched surveys about Thailand's travel potential, the cost of a holiday in Thailand etc. But they often miss the point, or they simply can't crunch the numbers on atmosphere or authentic experiences. Well, of course they can't.

I'd be happy to suggest a meal in Bangkok at far less than £88, but I won't suggest a three-course meal; that's not a Thai meal, that's a Western meal. And wine? Nope. Have a beer or one of the wonderful cocktails that Bangkok is full of these days.

By the way, the survey also states, that a cup of coffee is £2.80....well, you don't have to order the cuppa at Starbucks folks.

See the desktop researched survey for yourself:

Mangkhut...sweet flesh and a delicate texture. Well, more than that really. Mangosteens are tender, sweet, translucent, citrusy, juicy, sexy and in season. Right now. Go to Chantaburi for some of the best in Thailand. Or ask for mangkhut in any Thai market.
You won't be disappointed except if the sap from the fruit's skin gets on to your clothes.

Bangkok is Asia's gourmet capital and you should treat yourself to a culinary extravaganza while there. Yes, you may book a table at any of the 9 foodie temples featured in Asia's 50 best restaurants just recently. I did, and I would be happy to recommend some of these restaurants. But you could also just flick through the wonderfully tasteful and well-researched recommendations portrayed in Smag på Thailand by Christina Lund Sørensen and Mette Lisby. Even if you don't read Danish the book will have you craving for authentic Thai food experiences. Well done girls.

There is a new hotel in town. It's gorgeous and expensive. But it's still one of the most attractive choices if you want a bit of pampering in Luang Prabang. The city is full of attractions and some of them are in fact hotels. It doesn't have to cost 200 USD++ to stay in the most beautiful city in South East Asia. But if you can afford it, and want to temporarily move into a house draped in history and yet renovated with the modern day traveler in mind....well, here's your Laotian luxury abode. Azerai Hotels is the name by the way.
Why on Earth hotels with a price tag of 250 USD don't get people in the hotel pictures I don't know. Show me life, not just rooms, courtyards and mute slippers. Maybe I'll go have a chat with them.

Go local, act like a local and you will feel not like a tourist. Tourism is all about being a local, not a tourist, these days. You want to know how to go local in Thailand and neighboring countries?Just ask.

Local experiences have been my approach to tourism for many years. And in Bangkok I found someone to recommend and applaud for their local approach.

The girls at HiveSters have taken the worn out phrase "authentic" and injected new life into it in Thailand. They will bring you somewhere local to experience something that might otherwise have been presented in an entertainment place under the label: Old, extinct customs of Thailand.

That's why this video below appears like a pastiche of what Bangkok looked like a long time ago. And the point is, the video is now, the communities still exist, the experiences can be encountered today. Good job HiveSter-girls!
