In light of the recent earthquakes in Nepal, we have provided our recommendations to trekkers in the below 'Fact-Based Update on Nepal's Earthquake Situation'.
There are currently still aftershocks in Nepal. They are decreasing in frequency and magnitude day-by-day. For every day that passes by, the likelihood of another large earthquake is thus decreasing, eventually reaching a ‘normal’ level.
Currently all trekking regions are in fact open, except for Manaslu and Langtang. It is expected that Manaslu will open from mid September 2015 and onwards. Langtang was severely affected and is not likely to open in 2015.
We would advise you to consider visiting and trekking in Nepal again from August, however, you should be aware of the risk of landslides during monsoon season, which may have increased due to the recent earthquakes. Monsoon season is normally coming to an end in mid September.
From mid September and ahead, we believe the situation for trekkers has fully normalized and would therefore advise you to continue with any planned treks, except for the Langtang region.
We would like to emphasise that while Nepal has been going through a very hard time and has been very negatively affected by the earthquakes, the medias have not portrayed an accurate picture of the state of the nation. That is to say, the medias have been focusing on all the buildings, areas, cities, and people which have been hit worst by the earthquake, rather than also focusing on the many buildings, areas, cities and people which are in fact fine.
- 90% of hotels in Kathmandu are deemed in a good condition, and safe to live in. Tourists arriving to Kathmandu will therefore easily be able to find a nice, comfortable, and safe hotel room.
- There is currently no food shortage in Kathmandu; neither in most regions of the country, and nor in the various trekking regions, except for Langtang.
Nepal is a fantastic country, with fantastic people. The best way to, in safe manners, help this fantastic nation and its people to recover, is to continue with your planned trekking and travel activities in the country, from mid September and onwards. Another way to help, is to start spreading the many good news about the country.
