Our work involves much more than meeting turtles on the beach. We use "tags" – tracking devices that are safely applied to sea turtles' shells – to record where turtles travel once they leave Dominica! This data helps us better understand how sea turtles move around the globe and can inform environmental policy decisions for years to come.

Check out this map of our sea turtle data from the past thirteen years. See the different colored dots? Each color represents a different sea turtle species:

🟢 Green = Leatherback Turtle movements
🔵 Blue = Hawksbill Turtle movements
🟣 Purple = Green Turtle movements

Seeing where turtles have traveled around the world is a clear reminder that no organism lives in isolation. Dominca's sea turtles don't just stay in our local waters; they travel around the world to find food, mates, and proper habitats to survive.

Sea and sunbathing at Purple Turtle beach, where we saw some Pwi Pwi, traditional dominican floating boats, made from "bwa flo" (Balsa) logs. The boats were used in shallow waters for fishing.
We also found some beautiful baskets and hats made from palmleaves 🌴

Official Notice from the Office of Disaster Management (ODM):

The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI SRC) has informed the ODM that as of February 2nd, 2022, the water level and geothermal activity (heat and gas emissions) at the Boiling Lake has decreased significantly. The observed changes at the Boiling Lake are not necessarily related to increased volcanic activity in the area.

The current period of significant changes in activity at the lake began in November 2021. Significant water level changes at the Boiling Lake are not a new phenomenon but has occurred several times since first documented in 1876. In fact, reports indicated that the lake levels have dropped dramatically and have been restored at least eight (8) times in the past. The last draining episode occurred on 8 November 2016 with the lake returning to its normal state by 10 January 2017.

The public is reminded that these periods of instability can last for weeks to months before normal activity is fully re-established. As this current episode continues, the risk of harmful gases such as Carbon Dioxide and small steam explosions is heightened.

Therefore, visits to the Boiling Lake should be *AVOIDED* at this stage *unless approved by the relevant authorities*. The public is asked to keep updated on information provided by the authorities.

The UWI-SRC and the Office of Disaster Management, with support from the Forestry, Wildlife & Parks Division, will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
The photo below of the Boiling Lake taken on 02 February 2022 was received from an unnamed source.
