As we near the end of our second year living on the wondrous island of Dominica šŸ‡©šŸ‡² , these photos by our dear friend give a little snapshot of our familyā€™s life these days. Waterfalls, hikes, ocean breakers, islands on the horizon, reading in hammocks, messily eating fruit at rainforest farms (looking at you .up.farm ), doggie walk companions & playing video games on the sofa (that part was the same as when we lived in New York šŸ˜œ). Itā€™s been a big change from Brooklyn life, and of course adjustments to make & so much learning (and sibling scraps & meltdowns) , but weā€™re very glad we took the plunge for this adventure! To anyone whoā€™s considering a big life change that feels like it could be the right thing, weā€™d say ā€˜go for it!ā€™

Amber, along with & all joined in the sunrise yoga at Red Rocks led by Emma and it was a magical experience! And the post-yoga dip in the sea off the blue-black sand beach (look out for the resident friendly turtle who may join you!) is the perfect ending to the adventure. DRUM ROLLā€¦big announcement from Sea Cliff Dominicaā€¦weā€™d like to introduce you to our newest venture, Sea Cliff Botanical Gin!

Crafted from botanicals grown in our tropical gardens & by local farmers, this small batch gin has notes of pink grapefruit, bay, cinnamon, cocoa & nutmeg.

Like everything we do at our eco-cottages, inspired by the purity of the Caribbean's Nature Island šŸ‡©šŸ‡², weā€™re putting sustainability first: our gin is bottled using recycled materials & powered by solar.

Guests staying at Sea Cliff will be able to visit our on-site gin lab to enjoy a tasting & buy a bottle (our two sizes are 275 ml & 750 ml)

Itā€™s also available to try as a cocktail at bar in Calibishie. And to buy your own bottle, it will soon be in both Austries and A&A grocery stores in Calibishie, and coming soon to stores in Roseau!

Thanks to Chase Lawrence for his incredible mural in the gin lab, which showcases our local botanicals in all their glory! šŸŽØ šŸ‡©šŸ‡²

Salton Waterfalls in Pond Casse is one of Dominicaā€™s hidden gems! There are two sets of falls & we visited the lower when we went, which is a beautiful fern-fringed double cascade into a lovely pool for swimming. Itā€™s just a 15 minute walk from the road & the jungley river downstream from the waterfall is also fun to exploreā€”the boys loved climbing the big rocks! Weā€™ll be back to explore the bigger upper falls next!

While we travel this summer to the UK & California to spend time with the two sides of our family, Sea Cliff Eco-Cottages will be managed by our great friend Roann! Roann, her husband Chase & their daughter Avery (whoā€™s Louieā€™s age) lived on our road when we moved to Dominica and theyā€™ve helped us so much to settle in, weā€™re very grateful for their friendship. Roann is a fount of knowledge of all things local and will give you a warm welcome when you arrive, as well as being on call with any needs you have when youā€™re here!

I love the tropical gothic of the Roseau cathedral! Itā€™s also the gravesite of 18th century Italian painter Agostino Brunias, who died on this day in 1796, after painting an array of scenes of Dominica šŸ‡©šŸ‡² lifeā€”especially of the ā€˜free people of colourā€™ of that time. Iā€™ve loved reading about Brunias (Dominican historian Dr. Lennox Honychurch has written a wonderful account online). Brunias came originally to Dominica as a commissioned artist, but he then fell in love with the island, and also started a Dominican family with whom he lived for the final years of his life. Love that .k.simien featured one of his paintings! And Bruniasā€™ works, featuring scenes from Roseauā€™s market & river and other locations around the island, are now on display in the Tate London, Brooklyn Museum & the V&A amongst others.

This time two years ago we were in quarantine on our first ever visit to Dominica! (We were only allowed to leave our cottage on special ā€˜Safe in Natureā€™ tours šŸ˜„). On this boat ride down the Indian River, little did we know that weā€™d soon be calling this island home! It was a bit of a life pivot, after 11 years in New York & 10 in London, but it all seems to be working out šŸŒ“šŸ˜ƒ
This is an encouragement to make that crazy decision if it feels right!

Dominica has an incredible array of wild, natural beaches on its Caribbean & Atlantic coasts! Weā€™re still discovering new ones all the timeā€”white sand, black sand, unique rock formations, craggy islets offshore, jungle-clad cliffs, cool-shaped driftwood, where pristine rivers meet the sea. But they all have this in common: youā€™ll most likely be the only one there šŸ˜ƒšŸ

Joyeux NoĆ«l de la Martinique! Jardin de Balata was a magical place to spend the golden hour of Christmas Eve. Thinking of the Christmasses weā€™ve had in frosty rural England, sunny California & snow-laden New York, this one feels very different againā€”but Iā€™m grateful that wherever family is, it still feels like Christmas!

We moved from NYC to Dominica 1 year ago on Halloween! It was a surreal day to start a new life, but thanks to & who welcomed us with coconuts masquerading as pumpkins to make us feel at home šŸŽƒšŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø
A year in, we feel really settled here, and are grateful for that, after it definitely took some adjusting to lots of big life changes! Now, weā€™re right where we want to be šŸ‘Øā€šŸ‘©ā€šŸ‘¦ā€šŸ‘¦šŸ‡©šŸ‡²šŸ šŸŒ“

We had so much fun with the crew from the Reading Retreat! The boys were immediately won over when on the first day Cindy offered them to take their pick from the chocolate/crisps snack basket! And it was so cool getting to know the folks whoā€™d flown in from the UK, US, Trinidad & St Kitts for this adventure. In between reading and discussing books, they found time to chase waterfalls, brunch at , whale watch with , visit the local chocolate factory, lounge on beaches and eat delicious local food from our friends at , , & .

From the time when we first experienced Sea Cliff, Amber & I felt it would be the perfect place for a retreat. The calming sea breeze, the majestic views of mountains & ocean, the soft springy grass underfoot, the fragrant air, the seabirds whirling overhead. So it felt so good to host a yoga retreat this week with an amazing group of yogis from Martinique led by It was so cool to see the group do yoga on the big new deck, lie out on the lawns, wander around the gardens, pick bay leaves for bush tea. It felt like a realization of mine & Amberā€™s vision for this place!

Merci au groupe de Margaux d'avoir de si bonnes vibrations!

Weā€™re also so grateful to have partnered with local friends to offer the group unique experiences like the organic farm tour at .up.farm , a riverside lunch at Chaudiere Pool by .dominica Not to mention shout outs to the delicious, healthy catering by , an awesome final night dinner at , massages by Emma Esprit and our brilliant tour guide Uncle Sam!

Our layover today in San Juan got us thinking about our incredible time staying in Old San Juan last year. Itā€™s honestly one of our favourite spots in the world: those enchanting cobbled alleys with color-pop houses, the hidden old churches, the huge expanse of kite-flying lawn by the fort. And wandering those streets and ramparts in the morning, before the tourists get up, is a slice of wonder. Weā€™d go back to the same Airbnb too, with its secret inner courtyard filled with tropical plants and a pretty little nesting bananaquit bird!

Crazy to think this Instagram account started life as and here we are back at our old home the A-frame for a brief visit! It was falling in love with, renovating & renting out this lovely cabin on Airbnb for a few seasons that gave us confidence last year to take on the running of 5 Eco-cottages on an untamed Caribbean island! Weā€™ll always love this spot, so accessible to New York but feels like a world away when youā€™re staring through that wall of windows at Bird Island and the calm waters of Great South Bay. At Sea Cliff in Dominica we switched in sunrises for sunsets, but the themes of water, sand & big skies remain! (Oh and the boysā€™ fishing šŸŽ£ šŸ‘¦ šŸ‘¦ā¤ļø)

We discovered a different kind of cottage to Sea Cliff, and a slice of fairytale England in Carmel-by-the-Sea! In the 1920s artist Hugh Comstock began by building one whimsical cottage, with a steep pitched roof & rustic stone chimney, for his wifeā€™s rag-doll collection. His creation was a hit and he was soon commissioned by Carmel residents to build lots more in the same fairytale style! It felt like a movie set walking around the sunny little streets, and the boys were surprised that people actually live in these cottages!

We canā€™t believe it took us so long to discover Point Lobos Preserve! As we stood on one of its wildflower-clad cliffs, in the same field of view we saw sea otters, seals, sea lions, spouting whales and countless species of seabirds! The boys loved spotting the ocean life and exploring the hidden coves, with their rocky islets offshore and the sea crystal clear (and cold!). Weā€™ll be back!

Weā€™re heading to the States for a bit, and while weā€™re away from Sea Cliff our amazing manager Gweneth will be hosting guests at the cottages & looking after them very well!

Born & raised in Calibishie, Gweneth has worked at Sea Cliff for over 20 years, and lives just down the road. Weā€™ve so appreciated her joyful, calm spirit and weā€™ve learnt so much from her in the 9 months since we moved here. And a highlight of our year was going to her wedding a few months backā€”the best party ever!

Cabana (or Londonderry) beach, just 15 mins drive from us, has one of those dramatic craggy offshore islands with seabirds circling it, plus a great array of smooth stones that the boys loved building rock piles with! And itā€™s also one of the most identifiable locations from the ā€˜Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Manā€™s Chestā€™ movie!

02/07/2022

Itā€™s a cool dynamic when you get to just hang out with one of your kids solo, and I loved this hike with Teddy to a much-loved local black sand beach. The spot is particularly magical to me because of how we first found it. Mid-Covid when not many folks were traveling, weā€™d just had a full 7 days of arrival quarantine in our cottage in Dominica and it was our first day out and free on the island! Weā€™d visited the otherworldly Red Rocks and then taken an inviting path through the woods, to stumble upon this beautiful secluded black sand beach. From the cliff, we couldnā€™t figure out the way down to the beach, until a friendly dog showed up and led us there! It just kept getting better, as we arrived at the top of steps that had been masterfully carved into the red rock and led down to sand that was so black it was almost blue. It all felt like a storybook!
ā€¢
On this trip with Teddy, the dog showed up againā€”Roxy, we know her name now! We looked for the turtle whoā€™s often swimming in the bay & sticks up its head to say hi, but no sign this time. But we did find a pristine hummingbird nest perched in a tree overhanging the surf. These red rock steps to a black sand beach are as magical as ever.

It happened again: today we discovered another ā€˜new favouriteā€™ spot on the island! This friendly pup guided us on the Jacko Steps hike to dramatic cliff-flanked pools on the Layou River. In the middle of our swim out to a rocky island, it poured with rain, and we jumped back into the crystal clear water and floated on our backs, gazing up at the fern-clad rock pinnacles.
ā€¢
The Jacko Steps themselves are incredible: hewn into the steep and narrow rock-face, they were built by Maroons (runaway slaves) in the 1700s. The lush rainforest plateau at the top was a major Maroon encampment where the legendary Chief Jacko lived, hidden deep in Dominicaā€™s jungle interior where the colonial forces couldnā€™t find him & his followers. Itā€™s tragic to stand in the forest there & think of the horrific oppression that the Maroons were subjected to as they bravely fought for their freedom.
ā€¢
Today, as you begin the hike, you can hear the history of the area from lovely couple Eunice & Mal who live there and whoā€™s dog was our guide šŸ•šŸ˜Š

Fatherā€™s Day Hike to Victoria Falls, a river hike up through the milky waters of the White River which is sourced from the Boiling Lake itself! Amber & I are taking regular ā€˜Dominica date tripsā€™ where we go & hike in a new part of the island, while the boys are in school. Earlier this week we walked the trails around Fort Shirley at the Cabrits National Park. We had the whole park to ourselves, as we explored 18th century ruins hidden in the forest (including an ammunition bunkhouse still filled with piles of historic cannonballs!) and found epic views over Prince Rupert and Douglas Bays. Itā€™s incredible how peaceful these beautiful spots are, with no one around except the birds & the brightly-spotted lizards!

From our hike at the northernmost top of Dominica on Monday to its southernmost tip: today we went down to Soufriere & Scotts Head. Itā€™s a cool experience to stand on the thin land bridge between the wild waves of the Atlantic on one side & the calm turquoise Caribbean Sea on the other, and you can see Martinique on the horizon. At the pretty fishing village of Soufriere, the boys love the ā€˜Bubble Beach Spaā€™ that the awesome Dale aka Mr Bubbles, has set up there: hot springs right on the beach! The snorkeling here is fun too, with streams of bubbles coming up from the ocean floor.

This crew of kids on the beach below Sea Cliff made me very happy: 7 months into our new life here, Teddy & Louie have made such great friends. As I watched them fishing, finding hermit crabs & playing in the river together it was so cool to see how their bond is founded on their love of nature & the outdoors, of being ā€˜free-upā€™ in the wild. After school each day, their gifts for each other are plant seedlings, their favourite activities are fruit picking & their chats are about which tropical flowers are edible! Weā€™re humbled & grateful for how Dominica has given them so much, in friendships as well as abundant nature.

Toucari Bay on the Caribbean Sea is one of our happy places on the island! Itā€™s just over a half hour scenic drive from Sea Cliff and has one of our favorite restaurants on the island, right on the beach, called ā€˜Keepinā€™ it realā€™. Derek who owns the spot is also a fisherman so the fish & lobster is fresh & superb and the place always has the best tunes playing & loungers & a hammock out front to watch the sunset from. Thereā€™s also a pier for the boys to fish & jump in from, great snorkeling & kayaks for rent. Come & see if itā€™ll become your happy place too!

27/05/2022

Today, on the day of Guadeloupeā€™s Commemoration of the Abolition of Slavery, we visited Memorial ACTe, the worldā€™s largest museum dedicated to the history of slavery. Located purposefully on the site of a former sugar factory, itā€™s committed to preserving the memory of those who suffered and to address ongoing racial oppression and injustice in order to ā€˜live together betterā€™.

It was tragic and heart-wrenching, the exhibits powerfully curated and engaging for children as well as adults. We all learnt new things we didnā€™t know before. If youā€™re visiting Guadeloupe, Iā€™d say this is an important experience. Thankyou to and for the recommendation.

The Saintes didnā€™t disappoint! We took a day trip on the boat to Terre de Haut then explored by foot / hitched rides on golf carts when the boys got tired! The views from Fort Napoleon were incredible, down onto the blue sweep of bay speckled with boats & surrounded by colorful houses on hills. We loved the Plage de Pompierre with its grove of coconuts & we found a tiny beach at its tip where you can wade to an island, climb a winding path (dodging massive cacti) & get an epic view back to Dominicaā€™s shrouded peaks across the water.

This is our first time in the French West Indies and weā€™re loving it! From seeing the outline of Guadeloupe on the horizon from Dominica, itā€™s so cool to now be here looking back at our home. This morning we hiked a trail along the coast of Trois-Rivieres with our home exchange pup-for-the-week Kilem. We passed Amerindian rock carvings & sugar mill ruins, with epic views out to the Saintes islands (where weā€™re going tomorrow!) before taking a dip in a lovely river pool. Today on Amberā€™s birthday we hiked part of Segment 13 of the Waitukubuli National Trail, testing it out before we take the boys! It covers the far north coast of Dominica, with its knife-edge ridges, precipitous cliffs & rocky islets offshore. That, plus fragrant wildflower-lined paths, butterflies & the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean.
It was cool seeing Guadeloupe on the horizon, knowing that in a weekā€™s time weā€™ll be visiting for the first time, by ferry!
The boys could definitely handle the trail, so weā€™ll all be back to do the whole thing!

Amberā€™s request for Motherā€™s Day weekend was a hike to Dominicaā€™s tallest waterfall and one we havenā€™t been to yet: Middleham Falls. What was dramatic about this hike was how the trail comes down through the jungle from above to reveal the epic waterfall. The Falls plunge from a keyhole notch in the lip of the cliff down 200 ft to a huge pool below, surrounded by lush foliage & the tallest of rainforest trees. It was a brilliant way to celebrate , the best of mums/moms!
