The in-water photography sessions with the S***m Whales off Dominica has proved very popular.

Unit V have obviously come into the Lambatam ... Close to shore... To hide from the bands of pilot whales passing off our coast right now. See previous post showing the scars of last week's encounters ... We do not normally drop on feeding calves. But I have been tracking this pair to get this image of the calf upside down with its lower jaw actually in the Mammary gland slit. It is my hypothesis that the youngster then rolls its tongue like a straw and sucks out the milk.
So I had to make that drop.
Last Sunday I got the same pair feeding during a sleep session. Particles of milk floating around.

Jeroen Hoekendijk is a marine biologist, working as a PhD candidate at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). Both as a scientist and as a photographer, Jeroen focuses on marine mammals.
