Thirty years a

go, the area now known as Mangrove Bay was a place where villagers of Marigot, Wesley and Woodfordhill picnicked. Sadly, since then it has experienced total abandonment. Nature took over while Man sat back and watched, and it became a dumping ground for everything conceivable. We concluded sometime ago that the area could be restored and possibly become a major point of interest for visitors commuting to Portsmouth or Mellvillehall. The river traversing the Mangrove Swamp could be explored using environmentally friendly watercraft, maybe much the same way as the ancient Arawak who inhabited the village which adjoined our present location four thousand years ago. Our interest in the area continued to grow the more we became aware of the uniqueness of Mangrove plants and their importance to the environment and the ecosystem, and the opportunity to become practicing environmentalists. That was the driving force behind our efforts at establishing this new, unique destination, in the North East of the Island. Pedal boats allow passengers to get very close to the buttress root system of the Mangrove trees, while pedalling at their own speed. This is not only relaxing and adventurous, but the exercise from pedalling is good therapy. They also pose no threat to the river and its environs, including the rich variety of plant and animal life forms that make a habitat of the mangrove swamp. Many of the resident and migratory birds, crabs, etc can be viewed up close from your boat as you journey along the water way. It is our ultimate desire that Mangrove Bay at the Woodfordhill beach, will rise to prominence among the Eco destinations on the Island which it deserves. We want citizens of the North East in particular to take ownership of the project and embrace it as their very own.
