Mr. Pelagio Paulino alias “ Negro Tortuga”, is a local hero, a local leader, who have been working the last 20 years of his life in rescue and preserve the life of the different species of turtle that come to hash around the Caribbean in the areas around Saona Island and the East National Park Cotúbanama.
“Negro” have set up next to his own house another house that he use as his Santuary, our community Turtle Santuary at Mano Juan, Saona Island, the only area with habitants inside the entire Saona Island.
Negro run a little production of honey and coconut oil, that help him keep his project running. Everyday he look at the coast by boat or motor looking for the turtle nett and places where they hatch for protect them.

El Sr. Pelagio Paulino alias “Negro Tortuga”, es un héroe local, un líder local, que ha trabajado los últimos 20 años de su vida en rescatar y preservar la vida de las diferentes especies de tortugas que vienen a anidar en el Caribe en las áreas alrededor de la Isla Saona y el Parque Nacional del Este Cotúbanama.
“Negro” ha levantado al lado de su propia casa otra casa que usa como su Santuario Marino, Santuario comunitario de Tortugas en Mano Juan, Isla Saona, la única zona con una comunidad de habitantes establecidos desde 1944-1945 dentro de toda la Isla Saona.
Negro tiene una pequeña producción de miel y aceite de coco, que le ayudan a mantener su proyecto en marcha. Todos los días recorre la costa en lancha o motor buscando los nidos con los huevos de las tortugas y los lugares donde nacen para protegerlas tanto en su lugar natural y en el santuario hasta el momento de llevarlas al agua.

A fisherman village founded around 1944 during the time of the president Rafael Leónidas Trujillo who took the decision of send 14 families for live there and create a traditional town, those families also protect the territory and take cake of the land as one more of Trujillo properties.
Saona Island have an extension of 110 Km2, in their cost line you can enjoy around 12 different beaches, 3 lagoon, and 3 diferentes caves names Cotubanama, Hoyo de la Lechuza, Hoyo del Conjuro.
The entire area was declared national protected by the enforcement 1311, September 16,1975.
