Middle november. Somewhere is now outside rain, gray and slush. And at our house the season has come when our orange tree throws off so many fruits that we do not have time to eat them. What to do? Brew orange jam! 😋

German Octoberfest in Sosua

Even with a 'cheeky' reputation Sosua is a special town, where it's history deserves a look at in Wikipedia. You will uncover it's roots to the present day. Today the presence some hard working German speaking community plus many others locals and expats make it of many ways every day comfortable.
If not for German a baker with his "real bread" - I might not have survived. If not for a German butcher family with his traditional German products - maybe I would have died of hunger. La Playa Magazin (in print and on two languages) - runned even so by german Journalist. And many Bars & Restaurant with a german owners.. and! You must not not forget the nostalgic factor too!
Here you can get to know and experience Dominican, German, Russian, English speaking culture and traditions. Example, the Swiss restaurant with it's talented management and local staff. I would have been filled with unforgettable nostalgic thirst, however they keep the tradition of the typical 'Oktoberfest'

Many speak of Sosua and Cabarete as "villages". Maybe in some respects.. but! Only in our two 'villages', you can find the combination of international cultures without judgement..

We are a combination of hotel and private accommodation with a flexible and balanced grid of prices.
Are you just passing through Cabarete or want to spend only your weekend at the ocean? We work in the "hotel mode". We offer the comfort of the hotel (cleanliness, bed linen, towels, air conditioning, pool) and even more (good(!) WiFi, kitchen, refrigerator, lack of crowd, silence). In this case, all utilities, including electricity and final cleaning, are already included in the price ($35-$55 per night).
If you are looking for accommodation for a longer period (week, month), then in this case too, we will be the right choice. The price of rent per night will decrease at times ($13-$28 per night). Ordinary Tuesday. As usual, the sunny weather. Despite the fact that we have our own beach in the residence, but today we decided to visit the beach of Cabarete. As a rule, our route is as follows. We arrive by car to the residence of "Ocean One" (5min drive), which is almost in the center of Cabarete. We leave the car there and cross the last 300 meters (5min walk) to the central point of Cabarete on foot for a walk.
A clean beach and the whisper of waves raises the mood and gives a charge of vivacity for the whole day. :) Only the washed roots of the palms, reminded of the last storm. Today we chose a very earlier time to walk around in a cool way. Restaurants on the beach just started to wake up and get ready to receive people. But we found the restaurant VoyVoy, which turns out to be opening at 7:30am and offers an excellent breakfast in the area of ​​210-300 rds.
I love Cabarete. :)

Vacation accommodation DR Hurricane Maria 2017

21 Sept 2017. How we coped with Hurricane Maria.
In this year this was the second serious hurricane in a very short time. This is very unusual, but it showed us our advantages and gave us ideas for improvement in order to correct the minuses.
The fact is that one small "minus" was a big plus during such serious bad weather. Some distance from the beach, 10 minutes on foot in good weather seems far, however during a Huricane we experience much less wind.
Our deep terrace allowes us to safely observe the picture of the dancing trees "like in a movie". For some moments, the sound of wind through the leaves, catching up on your animal fear and you instinctively grab a laptop or mug so that they do not fly away without even feeling the gusts of wind. Unpredictability is exactly what fills you with fear and adrenaline!
The Dominican Republic once again experienced a serious day of "fear and hope of the best." The areas of Punta Cana, Bavaro, Samana took the biggest blow. We on the north coast were lucky in general, however we did not go completely without losses. Unfortunately of course the poorer more fragile houses suffered, along with some houses in geographically less protected areas such as those on the first line of the coast. In our residence Perla Marina, this time only one electric pole fell again resulting in many houses without electricity for a few days, but it is already in the replacement stage. Water and floods were not even close to an issue.
Irma was our training and we had much left afterwards as it was not used: canned goods, candles, lanterns, a supply of drinking water.etc. This time we were even more prepared and ready for the bad weather and aftermath. The most important being water in the reserve tanks and assured electricity! Having stocked up in advance with gasoline and this time connecting the generator to the inverter/reserve battery system made life more comfortably than last time.

What are the components of the best holiday housing for rent? Light, water and internet. From our 6-year experience in rental business, we know that people can survive a couple of hours without water and light, but without the Internet the world is collapsing, and with poor Internet the sun is no longer so bright and the sky is not so blue. :) :) :) We provide our tenants with Internet speeds of 10mbps and it is already included in the rental price.
Here you can rent a guest house on the territory of a private villa. When renting for a short period of 1-3 days: all utilities are included.

Today, with more calm nerves and recycled adrenaline, we sum up the losses caused to us by the hurricane. To say that "we were lucky" is to say nothing. A small shift of the hurricane to the north, our distance from the sea, concrete walls and the location of the house allowed us to get rid of with material damage of 10 dollars. The main power is still off, but the generator helps us out a lot. And not only us. As much as possible, we share energy with neighbors, give them access to the Internet and a place in our refrigerator.
We have already started cleaning up the mess, but all our thoughts are with those who are now experiencing the consequences of Irma on St. Martin, Puerto Rico, the Turk and Caicos Islands and pray for the Bahamas and Florida.

Every year hurricanes form in the Atlantic and move westward into the Caribbean or mainland North America but this year we now have a most unusual situation as ever bevor. We get warnings every year to be ready for these but this time we knew Irma was to be a real threat and we took all precautions in preparing our home and making sure we had supplies.
Last night started with clear skies, a full moon and no wind but the animals were restless and so were we, and every little sound in the night woke us up and had us checking all was well.
Rain started during the night and by daylight the wind was increasing. We had internet and with little else to do after all our preparations we spent most of time checking reports and monitoring the advance of the hurricane as it came along the north coast.
During the morning both wind and rain increased and we were expecting a very wild time, but it peaked at about one o'clock, - about two hours before the eye of the hurricane was due to pass by us about 80 km out to sea. We did try to take video of the effects of the wind but in our sheltered area there was not much that was dramatic to film. At the peak we had winds gusting up to 80 kmph but in our area we have not seen much damage, -- only a few branches blown off the trees, and the rain was nowhere near as heavy as we expected.
We have been very lucky, but our area is quite protected and the eye of the hurricane was a bit further out to sea than had first been expected. We perhaps did get a bit excited about our preparations but it is better to be safe than sorry, and I would rather we had supplies left over that we can still use than to be caught without any and unble to get them. We still do not have electricity and we do not know when that will return so for now we have to run our generator, and if there is damage or flooding inland there may not be any fresh food coming into our area for a few days.
We expect our lives to be back to reasonable normality within a few days. Hurricanes do come and go, but we are prepared for special situation.

Now it remains only to wait. :) Right now we have 10:15 pm.
Very quiet and hot evening. +30C. Full moon. A simple barbecue with friends is our dinner today. We will try to go to bed early. Predictions promise that Irma will wake us up at 5-8 in the morning. Look for our ubdates. :)

Hurricane Irma, who will be with us tomorrow morning, promises to be the most powerful hurricane in the history of the Caribbean region. Our regrets and prayers to the Island of Sant Martin and Puerto Rico. We: are ready as far as possible in this situation. And for abundant rains, and for a storm, and for survival a few days without the support of urban providers. Inverter, additional generator, pumps, furniture, documents, car, bunker, animals..

At the moment (12:30 pm/ 9 sept 2017), the situation is improving slightly. Hurricane deviated north of the island. But we are still preparing. :) Very heavy precipitation is still expected and our Resedencial "Perla Marina" does everything to prevent the deluge.
