Teatro Municipal yesterday and la Distribuidora González today

If you look at old photos of Independence Park from the early 19th century, you can see the old two-story Victorian building on the site of the modern la Distribuidora González. This building was built by the architect Roderick Arthur in 1895.

Thanks to this architect, most of the Victorian buildings of Puerto Plata were built. Roderick Arthur was born in 1849 in Grand Turk, UK, but devoted his entire life to Puerto Plata. The building belonged to Sr. Jorge Curiel. At first it was the Teatro Municipal, later the Teatro Curiel. Its capacity was 600 people. In this theater in August 1900, films were shown for the first time in the Dominican Republic. These were short films made between 1895 and 1899.

In the 1940s, the theater was demolished because it was in poor condition and a new building Teatro Rex was built in its place. The concrete building fully reflected the era of the dictator Trujillo. With the end of his era, according to the source, Teatro Rex was sold to Banco Caribe. Banco Caribe was supposed to build a bank branch, but due to the bankruptcy of the bank, this did not happen.

Today, "Distribuidora Gonzalez" stands on its place. This building is built in the same style as other buildings of the Independence Park, and harmoniously fits into the cultural heritage of Puerto Plata. Unfortunately, we could not find the name of the architect and the date of construction of the modern building. Did you know that the kiosk in the central park was built over 6 years?
There is a kiosk in the very center of Parque Central.
It was originally built by Englishman Roderick Arthur, who designed it as a masterpiece of woodcarving Victorian architecture of the time.
The kiosk was built at the end of the 19th century. But few people know that its construction took more than 6 years.

A small piece of history

The first mention of it can be found in the minutes of the meetings of the City Municipal Council (Ayuntamiento) from 1885. So according to the records on November 20, 1985, Gregorio Luperón came to the meeting of the city council and presented the design of the kiosk, which he proposed to build in the center of Parque de Recreo. He expressed a proposal that the city council "make the foundation of this building, as it will pay the rest of the expenses." And his offer was accepted.
On April 6, 1886, General Luperon again visited the city council, in the company of a well-known merchant from Puerto Plata, Cosme Batlle, and informed them that, after carrying out the necessary procedures and receiving reliable reports on this matter, "it appears that the material for the kiosk is worth 1020 pounds sterling gold", for which the two visitors, Luperon and Batlle, agreed to contribute the amount of five thousand pesos available to the city council, so that providing the amount of freight, disembarkation and setting up a kiosk, and the city council will take responsibility for the said construction work.

Three days after Luperon and Batlle's visit, Mr. E. M. Kunhardt, in charge of municipal works, presented his report and informed that the cost of transporting the kiosk from England alone would cost eight thousand pesos.

And at this point, apparently, everything stopped ...

Only on February 7, 1891, Mr. Miguel A. Peralta, in his capacity as governor of the maritime district of Puerto Plata, addressed the city council of Puerto Plata and requested that an extraordinary meeting be called to hear the proposal made by General Luperon in 1886.
The governor, Mr. Peralta, stated the following: as an authority and as a private individual, in his desire to give impetus to the progress of this city in all its manifestations, he conceived the construction of a kiosk project in the Recreation Center of this city, with the spontaneous help that some people gave him, and with effective cooperation, which he did not doubt.

And finally, at this meeting, the construction work was approved. On July 1, 1892, Manuel Cocco Alum and Miguel A. Peralta announced that they had placed a completely finished building at the disposal of the City Council.

Thus, more than 6 years had passed since General Gregorio Luperón on November 20, 1985 offered the city a kiosk in the Leisure Center and on July 1, 1982, when the kiosk was built.
