Discover the Galápagos Islands in 2025: A Must-Read New York Times Feature & a Sustainable Way to Explore

The New York Times’ latest article on the Galápagos Islands as one of the top travel destinations of 2025 is a testament to the archipelago’s unparalleled allure. The piece captures the magic of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcasing its pristine landscapes, iconic wildlife, and the delicate balance required to preserve its unique ecosystems. 🌿🐢

As global travelers seek authentic and sustainable experiences, the Galápagos offers a model of responsible tourism. The recent increase in the park entrance fee is not just a cost—it’s an investment in conservation efforts and the long-term preservation of the islands’ fragile ecosystems. Aligning with these goals, Latin Trails’ Seaman Journey, a boutique expedition yacht, is proud to contribute to sustainable tourism as a supporting member of the International Galápagos Tour Operators Association (IGTOA). Through IGTOA’s seed fund, Latin Trails actively participates in protecting the islands while delivering unforgettable experiences to its guests.

For travelers, choosing the right experience matters. Cruises on the Seaman Journey go beyond traditional tourism, blending comfort, small-group exploration, and citizen science programs. Guests not only witness the islands’ biodiversity but also play a role in their conservation.

A Complete Ecuadorian Adventure

Your Galápagos adventure shouldn’t stop there. Spending time on mainland Ecuador complements your journey and supports the country’s holistic approach to sustainability. Consider overlanding into the Amazon Rainforest, where lodges like the Hakuna Matata Amazon Lodge make reforestation part of their mission. Pair that with a stay in Quito, the country’s vibrant capital, where the ILLA Experience Hotel offers an immersion into Ecuadorian traditions. From cooking experiences to its support of young culinary talent through the NEST project, ILLA creates memories while contributing to local communities.

Why Travel Sustainably Matters

Every traveler to the Galápagos becomes part of the story. By choosing ethical travel options like the Seaman Journey and supporting businesses committed to conservation, you’re ensuring the magic of these islands lasts for generations.

Start your journey with the New York Times’ inspiring article and make 2025 the year you explore the Galápagos the right way.

Ancient Amazonian Empires Rise from the Jungle: The Hidden Civilization found in the Ecuador Amazon

As an Ecuadorian travel specialist at Latin Trails, I'm thrilled by the recent archeological discovery of a lost network of cities in the Amazon rainforest.
https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adi6317
This study, released by Science Magazine, throws open a window into a previously unknown chapter of South American history, and holds immense potential for tourism and understanding of the region.
Imagine, nestled amidst the verdant expanse of the Amazon, an intricate network of earthen mounds and buried roads - remnants of sophisticated societies that thrived alongside the mighty Andes thousands of years ago. These weren't just villages; they were sprawling urban centers, home to at least 10,000 people who farmed, traded, and built monumental structures, all long before the rise of the Incas.
This revelation, spearheaded by archaeologist Stéphen Rostain, paints a compelling picture of a vibrant Amazonian civilization. The Upano people, believed to be the inhabitants of these lost cities, flourished between 500 BC and 600 AD, roughly coinciding with the Roman Empire in Europe. This discovery challenges our understanding of Amazonian societies, traditionally viewed as nomadic hunter-gatherers. It proves that advanced complex societies thrived in this seemingly untouched ecosystem, leaving behind a rich legacy waiting to be unearthed.
As an incoming tour operator in Ecuador, Latin Trails recognizes the immense potential this discovery holds for responsible tourism. Imagine curated expeditions following the footsteps of the Upano people, traversing ancient pathways and exploring the vestiges of their cities. Responsible cultural immersion programs could integrate with local communities, fostering knowledge exchange and ensuring the protection of these fragile archaeological treasures.
Latin Trails already offers itineraries in the area. Actually, there is a route connecting Archidona (Tena Province in the Ecuador Amazon) with Macas (Morona Santiago province). On the way, we visit several waterfalls, lookout points, caves, and even stone labyrinths. One of the main attractions of the area is interaction with the Shuar people. This will definitely make a solid ad on to our itineraries and has potential to become one of the main cultural attractions.
But beyond the tourist appeal, this discovery holds immense scientific significance. Understanding the Upano people's agricultural practices, social structures, and relationship with the Amazonian environment can offer valuable insights into sustainable living and adaptation in this sensitive ecosystem. It can inform conservation efforts and inspire solutions for challenges we face today.
At Latin Trails, we believe this discovery marks a pivotal moment for Ecuadorian tourism, opening doors to a previously unknown chapter of our history and offering sustainable economic opportunities for our people.
Join us on this exciting journey as we delve into the mysteries of the Amazon's lost cities. Visit www.latintrails.com to learn more about our responsible travel initiatives and explore customized Amazonian adventures that can immerse you in this remarkable region. We have immediately started developing programs to visit this unique discovery.
Let's embark on a path of responsible exploration, honoring the Upano people, protecting the Amazonian ecosystem, and enriching our understanding of this awe-inspiring corner of the world.
Sincerely,
Marcel Perkins
