🌋 Ancient volcanic eruptions form lava carpets in the Galapagos.

These soils mainly comprise basaltic rock and present textures such as pahoehoe (smooth and undulating) and a'a (rough and fragmented).

Although they appear barren, these soils harbor fantastic life. 🌱 Lichens, cacti and small shrubs have developed unique adaptations to survive in these extreme conditions, marking the beginning of ecological succession. These areas also provide habitat for land and marine iguanas, which find shelter and food among the rocks.
