A estos chaparritos e hiperactivos pajaritos se los conoce como "pinchaflores" o "flowerpiercers" en inglés; nombres muy apropiados cuando nos tomamos el tiempo de observar su comportamiento... ágiles ladrones que gracias a un puntiagudo gancho en su pico, perforan las bases de la flores para tomar la dulce recompensa del néctar, sin polinizarlas.

Green-tailed Trainbearer, female (Lesbia nuna)

Shorter tail, brighter tone of green, straighter shorter bill; all faint details to pay attention when telling this one apart from it's larger version, the Black-tailed.

White-booted Racket-tail... a people's favorite, this little and fancy flying jewel bears 2 long greenish blue tail feathers and white pompoms around the feet.

The Chocó is a diverse bioma that stretches among south Panama, most of it through Colombia and northwest Ecuador; this Rose-faced Parrot is considered a chocó endemic (found just between Ecuador and Colombia, on the western slopes of the Andes), and to my liking, one of the most strikingly beautiful parrot there is.

This colorful bird is a toucan from the eastern slopes of Ecuador, the Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan photographed at Guango Lodge.

Glistening-green Tanager (Chlorochrysa phoenicotis)

An splendid jewel from the western Andean slopes of Colombia and Ecuador, difficult to properly describe as its uniform glossy emerald green color is unique among tanager, so you better see it by yourself to judge its shimmering hue.

The Andean Fox belongs to Lycalopex genus, one out of six species of this kind of canid that occurs exclusively in South America and the one that patrols the highest ecosystem; an opportunistic, smart and agile hunter that is usually sighted alone.
