Owl watching during our trips is a magical experience that connects us to the natural world. Capturing these magnificent creatures through photography is a rewarding challenge, but it’s essential to do so respectfully and responsibly.
1. Respect Their Space
When observing owls, it’s vital to keep a safe distance. Use a telephoto lens to get close-up shots without intruding on their habitat.
2. Avoid direct light on their eyes
Owls have sensitive eyes, and direct illumination can cause them distress. When taking photos, avoid shining lights directly into their eyes. Instead, use natural light to your advantage, shooting during the golden hours of dawn or dusk when the soft light creates beautiful images without the harshness of direct flash. Shining a light directly at an owl’s face can be particularly harmful. This can cause temporary blindness or disorientation, making it difficult for them to navigate their environment. Instead, aim your light at the surroundings or use diffused lighting techniques to minimize direct exposure to their eyes.
If you need to use light to illuminate an owl for a short period, keep it brief. Prolonged exposure to artificial light can be stressful for owls and disrupt their natural behaviors.
3. Say No to Flash
Using a flash can harm an owl’s vision, disorienting them and potentially leading to stress or injury. Opt for settings that allow for higher ISO levels or longer exposure times instead of flash.
Photographing owls is not just about getting the perfect shot; it’s about cherishing the opportunity to witness these incredible birds in the wild. By taking the time to observe them respectfully and avoiding harmful practices, we can enjoy their beauty while contributing to their preservation. Happy owl watching! 🦉

Portrait of the Hyacinth Macaw the largest parrot in the world.
Unfortunately, these beautiful birds are still considered vulnerable and face threats from habitat loss and the illegal pet trade, making conservation efforts crucial for their survival. Observing a Hyacinth Macaw in its natural habitat is not just a visual delight; it’s a reminder of the importance of protecting our planet’s biodiversity.

On February 13, 2023, I had the incredible privilege of witnessing a mother bear with her two cubs in their natural habitat. The sight of a wild Andean bear is always awe-inspiring, but seeing a mother with her cubs is a truly indescribable experience that touches the soul. The unmarked cub on the left, resembling a black bear, was named Sunfo after an aromatic and medicinal plant from the Andean páramos. His sister, a stunning bear with a unique and striking facial marking, remains officially unnamed, though her name is soon to be revealed.

The distinctive facial markings of Andean bears, also known as spectacled bears, are as unique as fingerprints, allowing us to identify each individual bear. This bond of recognition makes every encounter even more special.

Recently, after a year and seven months of sporadic and fleeting glimpses of Sunfo’s sister, I finally had the chance to photograph her again. It was great seeing her now, so strong and healthy.

The work carried out by the Jocotoco Foundation to conserve this reserve, along with the researchers who have worked tirelessly to find mechanisms to protect one of the most threatened species of the Andes, has been crucial. Ecuador is one of the best destinations to experience the charm of these beautiful creatures, but without a doubt, much remains to be done. We must unify our efforts to create a more promising future for this and many other species.

An Unforgettable Day 1 in Pantanal
It was a day we will never forget. We were just arrived in Southern Pantanal and started to explore, when suddenly, two capybaras burst out of the vegetation racing towards us and making a commotion as if seeking help. They dashed past us, barely three meters away, and right behind them, a young puma was in hot pursuit, intent on catching its prey. We stood in shock, unable to believe what was unfolding right before our eyes.

That night, driven by the thrill of the earlier encounter, we decided to track the area where we had seen the puma and capybaras. And there we saw them again but this time mother and cub running together in their quest of survival. We were deeply moved. Under the cover of darkness, we moved quietly and cautiously, our senses heightened by the possibility of another sighting. After a while of searching, we stumbled upon an incredible scene. There, we saw the mother puma devouring a capybara she had recently hunted. Witnessing such a raw and powerful moment of nature was beyond anything we could have imagined for our first day in the Pantanal. It was an experience that left us in awe and solidified our passion for wildlife exploration.
