The Galapagos Islands are renowned for their incredible biodiversity, boasting a high number of species found nowhere else on Earth. This rich tapestry of life is attributed to several factors, including the archipelago's unique location, diverse habitats, and isolation from the mainland.

Endemism: A staggering number of Galapagos species are endemic, meaning they exist exclusively within the islands' ecosystem. Around 80% of the land birds, a whopping 97% of the reptiles and land mammals, and over 30% of the plants are endemic to the Galapagos . This includes iconic creatures like the giant Galapagos tortoise, marine iguana, flightless cormorant, and the Galapagos penguin – the only penguin species found in the Northern Hemisphere! 🐦🐢🦎🦀 🐢

The Galapagos Islands are undeniably beautiful. They are a volcanic archipelago that straddles the equator, roughly 1000 km west of mainland Ecuador. The islands are famous for their unique wildlife, which inspired Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection. The beauty of the Galapagos goes beyond the wildlife, however. The islands themselves are stunning, with a variety of landscapes, including pristine beaches, towering volcanic peaks, enchanted lava tunnels, cactus-studded arid zones, verdant highlands and cloud forests, surreal pahoehoe lava fields, and mangrove sanctuaries. 🏔🐢🦎🐬🌵💙

The Galapagos sulfur mines are located on the western flank of Sierra Negra volcano, Isabela Island. This is the largest active volcano in the Galapagos Islands and one of the largest volcanoes in the world. The volcanic activity here results in fumaroles, which are vents or cracks in the Earth's crust that emit hot gases. These gases contain sulfur, which condenses and crystallizes as it cools, forming the deposits that miners have extracted for centuries.

A visit to the Galapagos sulfur mines is a popular tourist activity. Visitors can hike down a steep trail to the mines, where they can see the fumaroles and the yellow deposits of sulfur. The hike is challenging, but the views from the top are spectacular.

Here are some things to keep in mind if you are planning a trip to the Galapagos sulfur mines:

The hike is difficult and requires a good level of fitness.
The weather can be unpredictable, so be sure to dress in layers.
Bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Wear sturdy shoes with good traction.
Be aware of the volcanic gases, which can irritate the eyes and respiratory system. You may want to consider bringing a respirator, especially if you have any respiratory problems. 🏔🐢🌵🦎 🇪🇨

The Galapagos Islands are home to several unique cactus species, each adapted to the harsh, arid conditions of the archipelago. Here are two of the most interesting ones:

Lava Cactus (Brachycereus nesioticus): This is the smallest cactus species found in the Galapagos, typically growing only 40 to 60 cm tall. It's a pioneer species, one of the first to colonize new lava flows with its shallow root system. Their white, creamy flowers bloom at night.

Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia echios): Also known as the giant cactus, this species can reach up to 12 meters in height, making it the tallest cactus in the Galapagos Islands. There are 14 different varieties of opuntia in the Galapagos. These cacti store water in their thick, fleshy pads to survive the long dry seasons. Some varieties develop a hard crust on their pads and sharp spines to deter herbivores like tortoises and iguanas. 🌵🌵🦎🐢🌵

Yes, flamingos do exist in the Galapagos Islands. In fact, there is a unique subspecies found there called the Galapagos flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber glyphorhynchus).

The largest concentration of these birds is found on Isabela Island, specifically in eight locations including Salinas, Barahona Oriental, Poza de las Diablas, Quinta Playa, Puerta del Jelí, Baltazar, El Chapín, and Las Ninfas.
They prefer shallow, brackish water such as lagoons and coastal pools.
They feed on small crustaceans and algae, using their specially adapted beaks to filter them from the water.
Like other flamingo species, they are social birds and live in large colonies.
Here are some places where you can see flamingos in the Galapagos:

Isabela Island: This island has the highest flamingo population in the Galapagos. You can see them in various locations like the Poza de los Flamingos near Puerto Villamil.
Santa Cruz Island: Look for them in Las Bachas beach.
Floreana Island: Punta Cormorán is a good spot to see these birds.
Santiago Island: Puerto Egas is known for its flamingo sightings.
Seeing these majestic birds in their natural habitat is an unforgettable experience for any nature enthusiast.

What makes Quilotoa truly extraordinary is its turquoise-colored lake that fills the caldera, creating a mesmerizing sight against the rugged landscape. The lake's vibrant hue is a result of dissolved minerals, giving it an almost otherworldly appearance. Take a Breath of Life, Visiting the Enchanted Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Aboard was created by a group of travelers that have spent their life admiring the enchanted Islands that shows a unique and pristine flora and fauna. Our main Interest is to offer you a real experience where you can feel that paradise exists and it is located in the middle of the world.

Magical! That would be a good word to describe this set of isolated islands of volcanic origin, it is just their isolation that allowed the development of one of unique animal species, many of the animals that inhabit the islands are not found anywhere else in the world and act with indifference toward human beings, here on the islands the animals did not develop instinctive fear of humans, this is one of the reasons that made the islands an icon of biodiversity. It was on these geologically young islands and with numerous endemic species that led the naturalist Charles Darwin to establish his theory of evolution by natural selection.
