The Galapagos Islands are home to several unique cactus species, each adapted to the harsh, arid conditions of the archipelago. Here are two of the most interesting ones:
Lava Cactus (Brachycereus nesioticus): This is the smallest cactus species found in the Galapagos, typically growing only 40 to 60 cm tall. It's a pioneer species, one of the first to colonize new lava flows with its shallow root system. Their white, creamy flowers bloom at night.
Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia echios): Also known as the giant cactus, this species can reach up to 12 meters in height, making it the tallest cactus in the Galapagos Islands. There are 14 different varieties of opuntia in the Galapagos. These cacti store water in their thick, fleshy pads to survive the long dry seasons. Some varieties develop a hard crust on their pads and sharp spines to deter herbivores like tortoises and iguanas. 🌵🌵🦎🐢🌵
