August 30 is International Whale Shark Day! This day was established to raise awareness around the importance of whale sharks to marine ecosystems and their dwindling population numbers, and to encourage conservation efforts to protect these gentle sharks.

The whale shark, (Rhincodon typus), is the largest fish in the ocean, found in tropical and temperate oceans, in deep water and in coastal areas. Growing as large as 14 meters and 20 tonnes (45 feet, 6000 pounds) whale sharks are filter feeders, feeding on plankton, fish eggs but also small fish and squid.

According to the IUCN, the Indo-Pacific population of the whale shark is thought to have reduced 63 percent over the past 75 years. The population in the Atlantic is thought to have been reduced more than 30 percent. Globally, the populations are continuing to decrease. Because of this, whale sharks are classified as endangered.

Tuna Day 🐟🌊🎉

Happy World Tuna Day!
To celebrate we thought it was time for you to Know Your Thunnus!
The Thunnus genus contains the group of fish known as true tunas. The fish of this genus are some of the most important to the fish trade, but also some of the most endangered. Thunnus species are powerful, streamlined and built for speed. A number are quite big, attain sizes much larger than a full-grown person and weighing as much as an average cow! Sadly, many of these amazing fish have been overfished and overexploited.

Observed the world over on April 25th, World Penguin Day recognizes one of the unique birds on the planet.  There are 18 species of penguins, and all their natural habitats are in the Southern hemisphere.

Galapagos Pengüin 🐧

This is the only penguin species found north of the equator and in the Galápagos. Penguins are threatened by pollution, bycatch and climate change. Introduced species, such as dogs, carry diseases that can spread to penguins as well, and cats pose a threat as predators. Past strong El Niño events have caused mortalities of up to 77 percent, with dramatic declines of prey species and reduced breeding success.

The International Day of Action for Rivers is a day dedicated to solidarity – when diverse communities worldwide come together with one voice to affirm that rivers are vital and need our protection. It underscores the significance of ensuring communities’ access to clean, free-flowing water and emphasizes the fundamental right for all to participate in decisions concerning their water and lives. Now, more than ever, it is our collective duty to advocate for these rights and protect our rivers.

While not native to the Archipelago, three species of dolphin – bottlenose, spinner and common dolphins – pay frequent visits to Galapagos, drawn in by the nutrient rich waters that attract huge schools of fish.

Blue-footed bo***es are aptly named, and males take great pride in their fabulous feet. During mating rituals, male birds show off their feet to prospective mates with a high-stepping strut. The bluer the feet, the more attractive the mate.

All half-dozen or so b***y species are thought to take their name from the Spanish word “bobo.” The term means “stupid,” which is how early European colonists may have characterized these clumsy and unwary birds when they saw them on land—their least graceful environment.
