Happy Holidays Wish you your Surtrek team !!

We are thrilled to be back on the roads of South America! As we slowly restart operations with our first successful trips, it's hard to feel more than gratitude, for you, our fellow travelers, and for the many Surtrekers who have worked so hard to make this restart a reality. We know that we are not out of the woods yet. Care, hard work, and a spirit of optimism are still needed if we are to stay the course. But for now, let's celebrate what we've accomplished.

The Galápagos Islands !
We create memories that you will never forget!

At the forefront, health and safety are the most important… ..
We are experiencing a mixture of joy and relief, and hope that the darkest days the industry has ever seen are behind us.

The Covid-19 pandemic has brought travelers uncertainty and turbulence, new behavioral protocols, restrictions, mental stress and fears, closures and bans, canceled travel plans, new ways to work and connect, vaccinations, and vaccination skeptics. Hopefully, it has sparked tough questions and awkward conversations among travelers and a demand for a vital shift in attitudes and behavior toward more rigorous sustainability in travel and tourism with accountability and transparency.

Like many activities, tourism came to a standstill and will never be the same again in the future. Globally, we live in times of great uncertainty about travel in times of pandemic and about future travel.
We believe that less-explored and remote destinations will be preferred by travelers who previously preferred massive sites and large urban centers.
Remote natural places in South America such as the Amazon, the Andes, the Galapagos Islands, Machupicchu, the Salar de Uyuni, the Atacama Desert, Patagonia, Easter Island and Antarctica are expected to be the new destinations for the world's adventurers.

Hummingbird habitat!

They live in areas located at altitudes from sea level to about 4,500 meters. The number of habitats that hummingbirds occupy is very extensive and varied. ... Other habitats are: grasslands, rainforests, scrublands, savannas, meadows, agricultural fields, forest and stream margins, deserts, and mountains.

Hummingbirds have conquered a large number of habitats, among which we can mention the moors, mangroves, savannas; but most live in rainy or evergreen forests.

The species that make up the genus Colibrí have a size that ranges between 9.5 and 15 cm, and a weight of 4.8 to 8.5 g. Although they are small birds, they are not the smallest, since they belong to the genus Mellisuga. They have a broad, forked or rounded tail.

Hummingbirds are the acrobats of the air: they can fly from side to side, backwards, and even hover at one point. Thanks to the high-speed cameras, we have been able to slow down the movement of its wings to finally discover the secrets behind its flight.

Best Time To Dive in the Galapagos Islands

Diving is great year-round in the Galapagos. The wet/warm season, between December to June, is considered by many the best time to scuba dive Galapagos. This is because there is calmer, warmer water and better visibility. This is also the season to see manta rays and hammerhead sharks. This time of year brings an average air temperature of 86 degrees and average water temperature of 70-75 degrees.

However, others (especially advanced divers) will dispute that the dry/cool season, from July to November, is the best time to dive. This is a very popular time because you can see whale sharks, one of the most majestic creatures of the sea. This time brings chillier water and choppier seas, with average air temps of 70 degrees and water temps between 62-68 degrees.

The Atacama Desert

is the driest nonpolar desert in the world, as well as the only true desert to receive less precipitation than the polar deserts and the largest fog desert in the world. Both regions have been used as experimentation sites on Earth for Mars expedition simulations. According to estimates, the Atacama Desert occupies 105,000 km2 (41,000 sq mi), or 128,000 km2 (49,000 sq mi) if the barren lower slopes of the Andes are included. Most of the desert is composed of stony terrain, salt lakes (salares), sand, and felsic lava that flows towards the Andes.

The desert owes its extreme aridity to a constant temperature inversion due to the cool north-flowing Humboldt ocean current and to the presence of the strong Pacific anticyclone.[8] The aridest region of the Atacama Desert is situated between two mountain chains (the Andes and the Chilean Coast Range) of sufficient height to prevent moisture advection from either the Pacific or the Atlantic Ocean, a two-sided rain shadow.

Iguazu falls.

The Iguazú Falls (in Portuguese: Cataratas do Iguaçu), popularly called in Argentina as «Iguazú Falls», are a set of 275 waterfalls that are located on the Iguazú River, on the border between the province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná.

The falls can be seen from Brazil and Argentina and are one of its great tourist attractions. The Iguazú River traces the border between the two countries and empties into the Paraná River, where the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet.

They are unanimously recognized as the most spectacular in the world. Swiss botanist Robert Chodat (1865-1934) eloquently described its imposing grandeur: “When we find ourselves at the foot of this world of waterfalls, and looking up we see, 82 meters above us, the horizon occupied by a line of waters, the astonishing spectacle of an ocean pouring down into an abyss is almost chilling. " Marveling at the beauty of such a spectacle, the Swiss botanist described the characteristic flora and fauna of the area: “An exuberant and almost tropical vegetation, the lushness of large ferns, the canes of bamboos, the graceful trunks of palm trees and thousands of species of trees, their tops leaning over the abyss adorned with mosses, red begonias, gold orchids, sparkling bromeliads, and trumpet-flowered vines.

An opportunity to promote sustainability and resilience!

The coronavirus pandemic has not only caused a humanitarian disaster, but has also paralysed several key sectors of the Latin American and Caribbean economy, such as tourism. International tourist arrivals globally have decreased by between 58% and 78% in 2020.

Tourism was one of the first industries to be affected by the crisis resulting from COVID-19 and will be the most affected in the region.
The arrival of international tourists to the region fell by 50% in March and close to 100% in April 2020.

Domestic and international flights have also been reduced to almost zero. And in the Caribbean, the cruise industry has been particularly hard hit.

The countries of the region have adopted measures to mitigate the economic and social effects of the pandemic on tourism and prepare the sector for recovery. These recovery measures have also increased the diversification of the sector and its social and environmental sustainability. Joint guidelines and protocols have been developed to restore travel and tourism, and to encourage the exchange of good practices between countries to deal with the crisis and the future development of the sector.

We are optimistic that with your help, we will soon be able to begin the recovery of our Industry,
We thank you for choosing South America on your next trip!
