Learning the Ecuadorian Craft of Toquilla Weaving
This weekend, Cuencan artist Gabriela Zumba visited the Galapagos Islands and led a creative and cultural workshop on the traditional skill of paja toquilla weaving.
Toquilla straw is a fiber made from an endemic palm tree of Ecuador. Once striped, boiled, treated and dried, it is used to weave a variety of products such as baskets, homewares and the famous Panama hats, the national hat of Ecuador!
This artform is passed on by many generations and taught at an early age. Throughout Ecuador you can often find locals weaving in their homes, on the streets and at markets such as the famous Otavalo market.
