África is a naturalist guide for the Galapagos National Park, she was born on the island of Santa Cruz and her largest passion is the sea.

She crossed the ocean in a traditional Polynesian canoe, with no fuel, motors, GPS, sextant, nothing.

There she learned to read the wind, currents, sun, moon, clouds during the day and correct course with the stars at night. But what she really learned in navigation is that to be able to orient yourself you need to discover the subtleties of nature and for that you need to be totally present, feel it, and live it.

“When I surf I feel totally connected to the sea. I synchronize my breath, body and mind with the currents and waves, to slide and feel the power of the ocean in a few seconds full of adrenaline.
After surfing the rest of the day is happy and relaxed.

Ana Belén was born in San Cristóbal, she is a university student and works at the San Cristóbal airport, she likes to play football and has been surfing since she was 14 years old.

All her life she has liked to be in contact with nature, especially with the sea. The ocean has given her many friends; in the water she has met people from all over the world who have shared good advice, and fascinating anecdotes about the sea and the waves.

“I surf for love, because I liked it from the first time I grabbed a board, for me it always represented a challenge to fall down and paddle again until you catch the wave.

Playing on top of the wave, moving and becoming one with my board, the breeze that falls on my face and surfing with the animals from time to time, is something that makes me always return to the sea, and I would never change it."

Get to know the San Cristóbal Surf Community:

Carolina and Diego have lived together in San Cristóbal for 5 years. The two were born in Guayaquil, but have been in contact with the Galapagos Islands all their lives. They are a couple strongly linked with the ocean and the wind.

They are both naturalist guides in the Galapagos National Park reserve and surfed from an early age. Carolina is also a diver and Diego is a yacht captain, sailing instructor and lifeguard.

"Going to the sea, connecting with it so that everything goes well, understanding it, learning from it, taking care of it, respecting it and to be at one with it, makes me feel like it's my favorite place to be."
- Carolina

"Everything that surfing involves generates positive feelings within me, even the worst surf session."
- Carolina

“I couldn't distinguish smells, my nose was salty, my nostrils full of salt crystals. 20 days of sailing on the high seas had already passed, surrounded by nothing but the horizon day and night when suddenly a delicious aroma of earth, leaves and humidity, fruit and rock, a mixture of dry land caught me. That is when I felt like I’d made it, my first voyage to the Polynesian islands. "
- Diego

Martín was born in San Cristóbal, Galápagos. He works as a naturalist guide for the Galapagos National Park reserve. As long as he can remember he has always been sliding on the waves on a bodyboard in front of his house, and at the age of 13 he started surfing.

His learning stage was in the Ecuadorian continent, in the Andean highlands, surrounded by mountains and very far from the sea.
He returned to the islands 4 years ago and since then, the waves and sea creatures have captivated him so much that he realized that he does not need to leave home (Galapagos)

“I surf because nowhere else have I found so much peace and tranquility as I feel when riding a wave.”

"The waves of the sea have become my spiritual food every day."

Jerrico was born and has grown up his whole life in San Cristóbal, Galápagos Islands. He began to practice bodyboarding at 14 years old and never imagined that he would become a professional bodyboarder, with time he realised that he had a lot of talent. In 2019, he was world champion of the junior category in the Bodyboard Antofagasta festival.

“I bodyboard because it is something that I cannot explain, the sensation that you feel when you catch a wave is ‘Woo!’ ‘Amazing!’ You want to do it every day.”

“Today I am stronger than I was yesterday, but less than tomorrow, never say never.”

“I live very grateful for the place where I have grown up and to be surrounded by the ocean.” – Jericco Rosero

Joshua was born in San Cristóbal, Galápagos Islands, and is a student at the university here in San Cristóbal studying Environmental engineering. He has surfed since he was 14 surrounded by nature and spectacular sunsets.

“I surf because it fills me with energy, and I love the connection that I feel with the sea and nature.”

“When I was learning to surf with my bodyboard in the shallow part of the beach Punta Carola four or five years ago, I was sitting in the sand with my friend and we asked ourselves, “Why don’t we paddle out on the inside?”. So, we decided to paddle towards the inside of the break because the waves didn’t look too big, and as we did not know much about surfing, we paddled directly towards the break.

Every time that we were getting close, we couldn’t understand why all the surfers were paddling backwards. Then we looked towards the horizon and saw a series of 2 to 3 ½ meter waves approaching us, we tried to duck dive but as the waves were so strong, we couldn’t do it and we were held and rolled under water for several seconds. I thought I was going to drown! Luckily, I came to the surface and saw my friend was very far away from me, so I became really scared to see what had happened to him. He was crying, so we paddled back to the beach together.

It is here where I discovered the power of the ocean.” – Joshua Marcillo

Daniela Alarcón is a Marine Biologist, doing scientific research in the Galapagos Islands.

Being in contact with nature, exploring, trying new experiences, new places and changing the scenario over the years is something that she has always liked ever since she was young.

Dani has always liked sports. She was born in Quito, the capital of Ecuador nestled in the Latin American Andes. It is there where she tried rock climbing and river sports, and only 13 years ago she began to explore the world of Surfing here in the Galapagos Islands and loved it.

“I surf because it is fun and a super complete sport in my way of thinking, you need to be patient, perseverant and a good observer. In the technical and physical part I am still improving, but the main thing about surfing is having fun and having a good time with the people at the break.

To do all of this in the Galapagos Islands is incredible because there are so many animals around and that is why everything is perfect.

Juan Carlos has been surfing since he was 9 years old. He has lived in San Cristóbal, Galapagos his whole life and he is currently the president of the San Cristóbal Surf Club.

Ever since he was little he has always been passionate about the force of nature.

"Surfing gives me happiness, there is no other place in the world like the sea where I feel more part of planet earth and this is where my spirit recharges its energy to return to society within this world.

"My mother always tells me that from before I was born I loved the sea, from her womb the only thing that calmed me was when she put me in the sea ...

And today what gives me the most peace is being inside the spirit of the ocean.

And for this reason, I will always try to protect and honour it.” - Juan Carlos
