So proud of being part of this story. Thanks SWAROVSKI OPTIK Birding for ingniting change in the Quijos Valley an incredibly biodiverse territory in the eastern cloudforest of Ecuador.

🌟 A Pair of BINOCULARS with a Big IMPACT! 🌟

In 2014, Sandra Morocho Yuxi won the Digiscoper of the Year competition by SWAROVSKI OPTIK Birding with a stunning photo of a juvenile Swallow Tanager. The prize? A pair of binoculars that would change her life and her community.

By 2021, these binoculars became a vital tool for over 60 locals in the Amazon of Ecuador, igniting a passion for nature through birdwatching workshops. This shared love for birds led to the creation of Birdwatchers Valle del Quijos in 2022, dedicated to conservation and reforestation.

Now, in 2024, Sandra shares her incredible journey in a podcast. From a single pair of binoculars to a community movement, discover how one gift transformed many lives.

At the Global Birdfair, we brought a very special photo from the Quijos Valley, Ecuador—a portrait of a female Gorgeted Woodstar. Here’s why this photo is so special:

In Photo 2, you can see our front garden in 2021. It was barren, with no trees, and the soil was severely eroded after decades of cow grazing. Fast forward to 2024 (Photo 3), and after four years of dedication to restoring our native garden, we now have a thriving forest. (Believe it or not, it is the very same place.) This tiny Gorgeted Woodstar was the first hummingbird to visit our garden and has now become a permanent resident.
This story is multipling in the Quijos Valley as more local farmers are pledging to our transition towards conservation.

We dedicate this photo to two incredible people who have taught us what passion and hard work can achieve—Tim and Penny. GRACIAS POR TODO! 💚

Deep in Ecuador’s lush Quijos Valley, a society thrived—and then disappeared. But a lake preserved its story.

Finding familiar faces is always a joy. 😊
Over the past 15 years of guiding in Ecuador, I've had the honor of meeting some truly wonderful people. It was heartwarming to see some of them again at the Global Birdfair, bringing back such lovely memories.

🌱 Restoring land, restoring life! 🌱

From 2021 to 2024, we are proud of challenging ourselves to plant a native garden. Now, we have tall trees growing and over 50 bird species visiting every day.

These photos were taken in the same place, and we celebrate this incredible transformation! 🎉📸

We got the inspiration during a visit to Owi Photo Tours, for the record the first photo with our friends from UrbanOrnis.
