recovering the ecosystem of the Española Island but also helping to feed giant tortoises 🐢

The GV2050 team, with the support of park rangers from the Parque Nacional Galápagos, carried out an expedition to Española Island to start new experiments to recover the emblematic species 𝘖𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 𝘷𝘢𝘳. 𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 , using tools that help ecological restoration, essential in a difficult environment like Española.

In the greenhouse of the DPNG on Santa Cruz Island we managed to cultivate seedlings of 𝘖𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 𝘷𝘢𝘳. 𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 from seeds extracted from the excrement of giant tortoises. Such seedlings reached 4 years of age. This emblematic species of Española is the favorite food of giant tortoises (𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴). 𝘖𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢 is a source of water, food and shelter for countless animals and insects that are endemic to the island.

The plants were rigorously inspected by the Agencia de Regulación y Control de la Bioseguridad para... (ABG) to ensure that the plants are clean without the presence of pests or diseases and subjected to quarantine together with materials, equipment, luggage of the staff and park rangers.

Our objective is to evaluate which one of these tools allows the best adaptation of 250 seedlings and 4500 seeds to the island environment. Therefore, frequent monitoring will be carried out with the focus of conducting the ecological restoration of 𝘖. 𝘮𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘢 on a large scale.

Where is it? in the coastal area. The mangrove is a unique tree that grows in sea water and brackish water!
Common species in the Galapagos Islands: 'Black mangrove', 'Red mangrove' and 'White mangrove'.
Additional benefits and features: The mangrove provides shade for the sea lions, sea iguanas and the animals around it. It serves as a nesting site for various species of crabs, molluscs, fish and, of course, birds. Even the giant tortoises, which have become the symbol of the Galapagos Islands, enjoy the quiet and safe environment next to the mangrove trees.

cactus
where are you? in the dry zone. Cacti are resistant to extreme climatic conditions and grow in desert and semi-desert areas.
Common species in the Galapagos Islands: In the Galapagos Islands there are over 200 species of cacti, with the 'Lava Cactus' and the 'Chandelier Cactus' being among the best known. In addition, the islands have six species and 14 endemic types of cactus 'Opontia' also known as 'pear cactus'!
Additional advantages and characteristics: small and large cacti, with or without fruit - all of them can be found in the Galapagos Islands. We recommend stopping and taking a good look at the 'Opontia' cactus - with a little luck you can see giant deer, iguanas, cactus plovers, a variety of birds and more, eating its fruits with pleasure!
