Volcán Chico: A Journey Through the Martian Landscape

Our visit to Volcán Chico on Isabela Island was like stepping onto another planet. This secondary crater of the Sierra Negra Volcano offers an otherworldly experience with its surreal terrain, vibrant colors, and remarkable geological features.

As we hiked along the rugged volcanic path, the stark black and red lava fields contrasted beautifully with the deep blue sky and the surrounding greenery. Along the way, we encountered steaming fumaroles, venting hot gases from the earth’s depths—a powerful reminder of the island’s volcanic origins. The warmth from these fumaroles and their unmistakable sulfuric scent made the experience all the more vivid.

At the summit, we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Isabela’s coastline and the vast lava fields stretching out below. The combination of natural history, stunning landscapes, and the raw power of volcanic activity made this visit unforgettable. Volcán Chico is truly a must-see for anyone seeking to connect with the primal forces that shaped the Galapagos Islands.

The land iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus) found on North Seymour Island in the Galápagos were introduced from Baltra Island in 1932 by American philanthropist Alan Hancock. Concerned about the declining iguana population on Baltra due to habitat degradation and the introduction of invasive species, Hancock decided to relocate a group of iguanas to the uninhabited North Seymour. This move not only provided the iguanas with a safer habitat but also helped ensure their survival. Today, North Seymour’s iguana population is a remarkable example of a conservation effort that preserved this unique species.

Our adventure in the middle of the sea was nothing short of magical as we found ourselves surrounded by a playful pod of bottlenose dolphins. The crystal-clear waters sparkled under the sun, and the dolphins gracefully leaped and swam alongside our boat, as if welcoming us into their world. Their joyful clicks and whistles created a symphony of nature that left everyone in awe. Some of them even performed acrobatic flips, showcasing their incredible agility and intelligence. It was a moment of pure connection with the ocean’s wonders, a memory that will stay with us forever.

Today, during our visit to Fernandina Island at Punta Espinoza, we had the opportunity to observe the fascinating behavior of the adult male sea lions. 🦭

These impressive creatures develop a noticeable bump on their heads, which distinguishes them as dominant males. Known as Beach Masters, they hold this status for only a few weeks at a time. During this period, they bark loudly to assert their dominance and to warn other males to stay away from their territory.

During our visit to Floreana Island, we were captivated by the sight of a brown pelican resting peacefully on the volcanic rocks. Its large body blended harmoniously with the rugged landscape, but what truly caught our attention was its head tilted 180 degrees backward, a characteristic pose these birds use while preening or resting. The serene surroundings, combined with the pelican’s graceful demeanor, created a memorable encounter that highlighted the unique and tranquil beauty of Floreana’s wildlife.

During our visit to Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island, we witnessed a truly remarkable moment. After disembarking, we walked to the lagoon behind the beach, where a juvenile flamingo immediately approached us. It passed very close, walking gracefully between our group, and then continued along the trail toward the beach. Once there, it swam in the sea for a while before returning to the shore, where it fell into a deep sleep, standing elegantly on one leg. This extraordinary experience was a highlight for our guests, something rarely seen on the beautiful island of Floreana.

Today, at Suarez Point on Española Island, we witnessed the majestic Galapagos hawk, the top predator of the Galapagos Islands. This remarkable bird plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance, preying on small mammals, reptiles, and carrion. What makes the Galapagos hawk even more fascinating is its unique social structure; the female is polyandric, meaning she mates with multiple males. These males cooperate to protect and care for her and her offspring, a rare behavior in the animal kingdom. Seeing this apex predator in its natural habitat was a powerful reminder of the fragile yet extraordinary ecosystems of the Galapagos.

During our visit to San Cristobal Island, we embarked on an unforgettable journey around the iconic Kicker Rock, also known as León Dormido. This striking rock formation, rising dramatically from the ocean, is a sanctuary for an array of marine life. As we circumnavigated the rock, we were captivated by its towering cliffs and unique shape, resembling a sleeping lion. The waters surrounding Kicker Rock are teeming with vibrant marine species, and the clarity of the water offers incredible visibility. This spot is renowned for its snorkeling and diving, where lucky adventurers may encounter sea turtles, rays, and even hammerhead sharks. Our experience here was a true highlight of San Cristobal, showcasing the beauty and biodiversity that the Galapagos Islands are known for.

In flight, the juvenile great frigatebird is easily recognized by its distinct brown head, which contrasts with the bright white seen in juvenile magnificent frigatebirds. This brown coloring, along with its slender, elongated wings and forked tail, gives the young great frigatebird a unique appearance. Soaring gracefully above the ocean, it relies on wind currents to glide with minimal wing movement. These juveniles are agile fliers, using their flight skills to begin practicing food-snatching techniques, a key trait of frigatebirds.

The red-footed bo***es are the smallest of the three b***y species found in the Galápagos, alongside the blue-footed and Nazca bo***es. Unlike their relatives, which nest on the ground, red-footed bo***es build their nests in trees, taking advantage of their unique, webbed red feet that are well-suited for gripping branches. With their distinct reddish feet and pale or brownish plumage, they are easily distinguishable and are known for their graceful flight and specialized feeding behavior, diving for fish far from shore.

Exploring the Enigmatic Lava Tunnel at Post Office Bay, Floreana Island

Nestled in the heart of Post Office Bay on Floreana Island, the lava tunnel is one of the Galapagos’ most intriguing natural wonders, offering a blend of mystery, adventure, and history. To reach this fascinating spot, visitors embark on a short 300-meter walk from the famous Post Office Barrel, where letters have been exchanged since the whaling days. As you approach the tunnel, be prepared for a steep descent of approximately 30 meters, dropping straight down into the darkness.

Once inside, the lava tunnel plunges you into complete darkness, so it’s essential to bring a strong flashlight to light the way. The tunnel’s widest section stretches an impressive 80 meters in diameter, creating a vast, shadowed cavern. As you venture deeper, you can feel the air cool and the walls close in around you as you head toward the ocean’s icy, dark waters that lap against the tunnel’s rocky end. Local legend hints that this tunnel may have once been a hideout for pirates, adding an extra layer of mystery to this dark and secluded spot.
