Today, we visited the enchanting Black Turtle Cove on Santa Cruz Island. In the calm, pristine waters of the cove, we encountered numerous sea turtles gracefully floating. The most fascinating sight was observing their courtship and mating behavior. The male, much smaller and with a longer tail, could often be seen resting on the shell of a female. In some instances, however, we witnessed two or even three males patiently waiting for their chance to mate. It was a unique and captivating moment, a reminder that love is truly in the water.

During our visit to Punta Suárez on Española Island, we saw many Nazca bo***es nesting in the area. In one of the nests, we noticed two eggs. This species is known for a behavior called siblicide, where the older chick typically kills the younger one, ensuring that only one survives. In rare cases where the younger chick survives and does not kill its sibling during the early stages of life, it may eventually do so upon reaching adulthood. This behavior is natural for Nazca bo***es and demonstrates how the second egg serves as a backup in case the first chick does not survive. It’s a fascinating yet stark example of the survival strategies found in the Galápagos Islands.

The neck provides a genuine basis for natural selection based on its length. However, it has also been shown that when tortoises stand off in dominance battles, the individual with the longer neck tends to win. Volcán Chico: A Journey Through the Martian Landscape

Our visit to Volcán Chico on Isabela Island was like stepping onto another planet. This secondary crater of the Sierra Negra Volcano offers an otherworldly experience with its surreal terrain, vibrant colors, and remarkable geological features.

As we hiked along the rugged volcanic path, the stark black and red lava fields contrasted beautifully with the deep blue sky and the surrounding greenery. Along the way, we encountered steaming fumaroles, venting hot gases from the earth’s depths—a powerful reminder of the island’s volcanic origins. The warmth from these fumaroles and their unmistakable sulfuric scent made the experience all the more vivid.

At the summit, we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Isabela’s coastline and the vast lava fields stretching out below. The combination of natural history, stunning landscapes, and the raw power of volcanic activity made this visit unforgettable. The land iguanas (Conolophus subcristatus) found on North Seymour Island in the Galápagos were introduced from Baltra Island in 1932 by American philanthropist Alan Hancock. Concerned about the declining iguana population on Baltra due to habitat degradation and the introduction of invasive species, Hancock decided to relocate a group of iguanas to the uninhabited North Seymour. Our adventure in the middle of the sea was nothing short of magical as we found ourselves surrounded by a playful pod of bottlenose dolphins. Today, during our visit to Fernandina Island at Punta Espinoza, we had the opportunity to observe the fascinating behavior of the adult male sea lions. 🦭

During our visit to Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island, we witnessed a truly remarkable moment. After disembarking, we walked to the lagoon behind the beach, where a juvenile flamingo immediately approached us. It passed very close, walking gracefully between our group, and then continued along the trail toward the beach. Once there, it swam in the sea for a while before returning to the shore, where it fell into a deep sleep, standing elegantly on one leg. This extraordinary experience was a highlight for our guests, something rarely seen on the beautiful island of Floreana.

Today, at Suarez Point on Española Island, we witnessed the majestic Galapagos hawk, the top predator of the Galapagos Islands. This remarkable bird plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance, preying on small mammals, reptiles, and carrion. What makes the Galapagos hawk even more fascinating is its unique social structure; the female is polyandric, meaning she mates with multiple males. These males cooperate to protect and care for her and her offspring, a rare behavior in the animal kingdom. During our visit to San Cristobal Island, we embarked on an unforgettable journey around the iconic Kicker Rock, also known as León Dormido. This striking rock formation, rising dramatically from the ocean, is a sanctuary for an array of marine life. As we circumnavigated the rock, we were captivated by its towering cliffs and unique shape, resembling a sleeping lion. The waters surrounding Kicker Rock are teeming with vibrant marine species, and the clarity of the water offers incredible visibility. Bachas Beach, located on Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos, is a beautiful site known for its stunning wildlife and pristine sands. Here, visitors can spot vibrant flamingos wading gracefully in the shallow lagoons, as well as sanderlings, waders, and other shorebirds that frequent the area. The beach is also a significant nesting site for marine turtles, who return here seasonally to lay their eggs in the soft sand. This diverse mix of wildlife, set against a backdrop of turquoise waters and white sand, makes Bachas Beach a special spot for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

During our panga ride at Caleta Tortuga Negra on Santa Cruz Island, we observed the mating behavior of sea turtles. Male sea turtles are noticeably smaller in body size compared to females, but they have a much larger and longer tail, which is a key physical characteristic that distinguishes them during mating. Today, during our visit to Puerto Villamil on Isabela Island, we observed the fascinating feeding behavior of the Galapagos flamingos. These graceful birds feed by filtering small organisms such as algae, plankton, and tiny crustaceans from the shallow lagoons. They use their uniquely shaped beaks, which are adapted to work upside-down, to sift through the muddy water. Black-winged stilts are elegant wading birds known for their long, slender legs and striking black-and-white plumage. Found in wetlands across the Americas, they forage in shallow water for insects and small aquatic animals. Like many wading birds, stilts often stand on one leg, which is thought to help conserve body heat. By tucking one leg close to their body, they reduce heat loss when standing in cooler water. During our dinghy ride at Punta Espinoza, on Fernandina Island, we found ourselves in the calm waters of a nearly hidden bay. To our delight, a fearless Galápagos penguin swam toward us. What caught our attention was that the penguin seemed to be swimming with only one flipper, while the other rested above its feathers, out of the water. We wondered if something was wrong or if it had a broken wing. Today, we visited *El Trapiche* farm, where we were warmly welcomed by the owner, Mr. Adriano Cabrera. One of the most fascinating moments of the tour was when Mr. Cabrera demonstrated his ingenious method of removing the dried coffee husk. After the coffee seeds had been previously crushed to pulverize the husk, there were still remnants of the dried shell clinging to the seeds. Using a fan, Mr. Cabrera skillfully blew away the remaining husk, separating it from the coffee beans in a simple yet effective way.
