Volcán Chico: A Journey Through the Martian Landscape

Our visit to Volcán Chico on Isabela Island was like stepping onto another planet. This secondary crater of the Sierra Negra Volcano offers an otherworldly experience with its surreal terrain, vibrant colors, and remarkable geological features.

As we hiked along the rugged volcanic path, the stark black and red lava fields contrasted beautifully with the deep blue sky and the surrounding greenery. Along the way, we encountered steaming fumaroles, venting hot gases from the earth’s depths—a powerful reminder of the island’s volcanic origins. The warmth from these fumaroles and their unmistakable sulfuric scent made the experience all the more vivid.

At the summit, we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Isabela’s coastline and the vast lava fields stretching out below. The combination of natural history, stunning landscapes, and the raw power of volcanic activity made this visit unforgettable. During our visit to Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island, we witnessed a truly remarkable moment. After disembarking, we walked to the lagoon behind the beach, where a juvenile flamingo immediately approached us. It passed very close, walking gracefully between our group, and then continued along the trail toward the beach. Once there, it swam in the sea for a while before returning to the shore, where it fell into a deep sleep, standing elegantly on one leg. Exploring the Enigmatic Lava Tunnel at Post Office Bay, Floreana Island

Nestled in the heart of Post Office Bay on Floreana Island, the lava tunnel is one of the Galapagos’ most intriguing natural wonders, offering a blend of mystery, adventure, and history. To reach this fascinating spot, visitors embark on a short 300-meter walk from the famous Post Office Barrel, where letters have been exchanged since the whaling days. As you approach the tunnel, be prepared for a steep descent of approximately 30 meters, dropping straight down into the darkness.

Once inside, the lava tunnel plunges you into complete darkness, so it’s essential to bring a strong flashlight to light the way.
