The Blue-footed B***y is a striking bird, known for its vibrant blue feet and distinctive courtship dance. Capturing these seabirds at sunset offers a unique photographic opportunity, as the warm hues of the setting sun blend with the cool blues of their feet, creating a stunning contrast.

To achieve a clearer photo, it’s important to control the background by using a shallow depth of field, which isolates the subject and softens any distracting elements behind it. The interplay of light and color at this golden hour can enhance the details of the bird’s plumage, making for a more vivid and memorable image.

Before breakfast, we embarked on a Zodiac ride to explore the wonders of Bartolomé Island. During our excursion, we were fortunate enough to spot a Galápagos penguin, perfectly poised for the cameras as it stood on rocks entirely covered in vibrant green algae. This journey is truly fantastic, whether experienced through island hopping or aboard a navigable cruise.

In a perfect moment of timing, just as a Blue-footed B***y released its droppings, we managed to capture the precise arc of the excrement in mid-air. This fleeting instance, usually unnoticed, required an adjustment in shutter speed, increasing it to freeze the movement and capture the scene with clarity. The photograph, though seemingly simple, demanded precision to immortalize this split-second event in nature.

This kind of unique photographic opportunity is one of the many highlights that Equinoxtours offers during its photography tours, available in both Island Hopping and Navigable Cruise modes.

This morning, before breakfast, we set off for Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island.

The visit was incredible as we encountered flamingos everywhere. We all had the chance to photograph these beautiful creatures feeding along the lagoon behind the landing beach.

If you come to the Galápagos and enjoy photography, keep in mind that the best lighting is early in the morning after six and late in the afternoon after 4:30, and today was no exception.

Each island has its own attraction. Just as we enjoyed the flamingos today, you can experience albatrosses on Española Island and red-footed bo***es on Genovesa Island, among others.

Check out our promotions and photography trips, both on cruises ships and in island-hopping mode.

Our visit to the Sierra Negra volcano on Isabela Island was a great experience despite the weather. The day was cloudy and rainy, adding a mystical touch to the volcanic landscape. As we hiked up, the mist and rain enveloped the surroundings, offering fleeting glimpses of the vast crater and the petrified lava formations. Although the panoramic views were limited, the foggy and rainy atmosphere enhanced the grandeur and mystery of the volcano, making our trek a unique and memorable adventure.

A male blue-footed b***y.

It is known for its striking blue feet, which it uses to attract mates through elaborate courtship dances. In contrast, the female has larger pupils and a bigger body size compared to the male. The difference in pupil size helps differentiate between the sexes, as does the variation in body size, with females generally being more robust.

Our visit to Cotopaxi Volcano was an exhilarating and educational adventure. Situated in Ecuador’s Andean mountains, Cotopaxi is one of the world’s highest active volcanoes, and it provided a stunning backdrop for our exploration. The students were captivated by the striking landscapes, diverse flora and fauna, and the opportunity to learn about volcanic activity and geological formations firsthand. The journey included a hike up the lower slopes, where we observed the pristine Andean environment and discussed the historical and cultural significance of the volcano. This experience not only enriched the students’ understanding of natural sciences but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the beauty and power of nature.

The brown noddy tern you observed during your visit to Las Grietas on Santa Cruz Island is a striking seabird known for its elegant appearance and distinctive behavior. This tern, scientifically known as *Anous stolidus*, is characterized by its sleek, dark brown plumage that gives it a uniform appearance, making it easily distinguishable from other seabirds. It has a relatively large head, a sharp, pointed black beak, and long, slender wings that enable graceful flight.

The brown noddy often nests on rocky ledges and cliffs, which are abundant in the unique geological formations of Las Grietas. These birds are social creatures, often seen in flocks, and are known for their calm demeanor, rarely displaying the aggressive behavior common in other tern species. As adept fishers, they typically feed on small fish and squid, which they catch by diving into the water from above.

Our visit to Quilotoa Lake in the Ecuadorian Andes with the students of Presbyterian College was a remarkable experience. Located at an altitude of approximately 3,914 meters (12,841 feet), Quilotoa Lake is a stunning sight with its vibrant turquoise water nestled within the caldera of an ancient volcano. The hike down into the volcano was quite steep and challenging, offering a dramatic descent that tested our endurance but rewarded us with breathtaking views and a profound sense of accomplishment upon reaching the lake’s edge.

The students are pictured wearing ponchos woven by indigenous artisans from various communities in Otavalo, Cotacachi, Lasso, and the Cotopaxi province. These vibrant, handcrafted garments highlight the rich textile heritage of these regions. Behind them, the imposing Cotopaxi Volcano, its snow-capped peak standing majestically against the sky, adding a dramatic and breathtaking element to the photograph. This image beautifully captures the intersection of cultural tradition and natural grandeur in Ecuador.

Two good friends, who are both professors, have visited the Galapagos Islands several times with us. Their shared passion for teaching and exploring the natural world has made these trips particularly memorable.

Observing the penguins on Bartolomé Island in the Galapagos with our students was an unforgettable experience that captivated everyone. The Galapagos penguins, among the smallest and most endearing of their kind, enchanted the students with their sleek black and white feathers and their playful, agile movements in the water.

These penguins, uniquely adapted to the warmer equatorial environment, provided a living lesson in evolutionary biology and the adaptability of species. The students were particularly fascinated by how these remarkable birds could thrive in such a distinct climate, leading to animated discussions about conservation and the delicate balance of the Galapagos ecosystem. The experience not only sparked curiosity but also a deep appreciation for the natural world among the young observers.

Can you imagine having a photo critique in one of the most remote places in the world? Well, Dr. Wetzel and I try to do it every year on Floreana Island. A place that still maintains the rustic charm of the Galapagos as if you were living 100 years ago. Some students preferred to photograph sea turtles, sharks, marine iguanas, land tortoises, etc., and we had time to give our opinions on each of them. An unforgettable experience, without a doubt.

During our visit to Floreana Island, we enjoyed magical nights in Puerto Velasco Ibarra. The completely clear sky provided an unparalleled opportunity for night photography. We observed and captured stunning images of the moon, the stars, and several constellations. This perfect setting also allowed us to stargaze with the students, who were amazed by the clarity and beauty of the firmament, making each night an educational and memorable experience under the vast starry sky of the Galápagos.

Today, we visited the lava tunnel located in Post Office Bay on Floreana Island. This photo was taken inside the tunnel, where it was completely dark. We used a powerful flashlight to illuminate the interior, revealing the impressive features of the lava-formed chamber.

The visit was an incredible experience, as the hike to the tunnel and the exploration of its vast, shadowy depths gave us a unique glimpse into the geological history of the Galápagos Islands.
