Exploring the Enigmatic Lava Tunnel at Post Office Bay, Floreana Island

Nestled in the heart of Post Office Bay on Floreana Island, the lava tunnel is one of the Galapagos’ most intriguing natural wonders, offering a blend of mystery, adventure, and history. To reach this fascinating spot, visitors embark on a short 300-meter walk from the famous Post Office Barrel, where letters have been exchanged since the whaling days. As you approach the tunnel, be prepared for a steep descent of approximately 30 meters, dropping straight down into the darkness.

Once inside, the lava tunnel plunges you into complete darkness, so it’s essential to bring a strong flashlight to light the way. The tunnel’s widest section stretches an impressive 80 meters in diameter, creating a vast, shadowed cavern. As you venture deeper, you can feel the air cool and the walls close in around you as you head toward the ocean’s icy, dark waters that lap against the tunnel’s rocky end. Local legend hints that this tunnel may have once been a hideout for pirates, adding an extra layer of mystery to this dark and secluded spot.

Our visit to Punta Pitt on San Cristobal Island was a highlight of our Galapagos adventure. This rugged outpost is home to a thriving colony of Red-Footed Bo***es, and witnessing their nesting sites up close was a privilege.

But the real challenge came when we decided to hike to the summit of the hill, a strenuous climb that pushed us to our limits. The reward, however, was breathtaking: panoramic views of the ocean, dramatic sea cliffs, and the island’s volcanic landscape stretching out as far as the eye could see.

The sense of accomplishment and awe made this unforgettable experience one of the most memorable moments of our trip.

The brown noddy tern (*Anous stolidus*) is a seabird commonly found in the Galápagos Islands. This species is easily recognizable by its dark brown plumage, lighter gray crown, and white crescent-shaped markings above its eyes. Brown noddies are often seen nesting in rocky coastal cliffs or on low shrubs and bushes near the shore. They feed primarily on small fish and squid, which they catch by diving into the water.

The waved albatross (Phoebastria irrorata), also known as the Galapagos albatross, is one of the most iconic birds of Española Island in the Galápagos archipelago. This species is unique as it is the only albatross that lives in the tropics, and it is famous for its remarkable flying skills and unique courtship behavior, which includes bill clapping and synchronized dances. The waved albatross has distinctive plumage, with a yellowish-white head and a dark brown body. It is currently listed as vulnerable due to habitat loss, bycatch in fisheries, and environmental changes caused by climate change. Española Island is the only breeding ground for this species, making its protection vital for the conservation of the unique biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands.

The Blue-footed B***y is a striking bird, known for its vibrant blue feet and distinctive courtship dance. Capturing these seabirds at sunset offers a unique photographic opportunity, as the warm hues of the setting sun blend with the cool blues of their feet, creating a stunning contrast.

To achieve a clearer photo, it’s important to control the background by using a shallow depth of field, which isolates the subject and softens any distracting elements behind it. The interplay of light and color at this golden hour can enhance the details of the bird’s plumage, making for a more vivid and memorable image.

Before breakfast, we embarked on a Zodiac ride to explore the wonders of Bartolomé Island. This journey is truly fantastic, whether experienced through island hopping or aboard a navigable cruise.

In a perfect moment of timing, just as a Blue-footed B***y released its droppings, we managed to capture the precise arc of the excrement in mid-air. This fleeting instance, usually unnoticed, required an adjustment in shutter speed, increasing it to freeze the movement and capture the scene with clarity. The photograph, though seemingly simple, demanded precision to immortalize this split-second event in nature.

This kind of unique photographic opportunity is one of the many highlights that Equinoxtours offers during its photography tours, available in both Island Hopping and Navigable Cruise modes.

This morning, before breakfast, we set off for Punta Cormorant on Floreana Island.

The visit was incredible as we encountered flamingos everywhere. We all had the chance to photograph these beautiful creatures feeding along the lagoon behind the landing beach.

If you come to the Galápagos and enjoy photography, keep in mind that the best lighting is early in the morning after six and late in the afternoon after 4:30, and today was no exception.

Each island has its own attraction. Just as we enjoyed the flamingos today, you can experience albatrosses on Española Island and red-footed bo***es on Genovesa Island, among others.

Check out our promotions and photography trips, both on cruises ships and in island-hopping mode.

Our visit to the Sierra Negra volcano on Isabela Island was a great experience despite the weather. The day was cloudy and rainy, adding a mystical touch to the volcanic landscape. As we hiked up, the mist and rain enveloped the surroundings, offering fleeting glimpses of the vast crater and the petrified lava formations. Although the panoramic views were limited, the foggy and rainy atmosphere enhanced the grandeur and mystery of the volcano, making our trek a unique and memorable adventure.
