Today, we visited Tortuga Islet for a diving adventure. Located close to Isabela Island, this spot is ideal for sightings of sunfish (mola mola), Galapagos sharks, hammerhead sharks, and an incredible variety of colorful fish. We explored this site with Equinoxtours as part of our island-hopping options, making our base in Puerto Villamil at one of our selected hotels.

Black-winged stilts are elegant wading birds known for their long, slender legs and striking black-and-white plumage. Found in wetlands across the Americas, they forage in shallow water for insects and small aquatic animals. Like many wading birds, stilts often stand on one leg, which is thought to help conserve body heat. By tucking one leg close to their body, they reduce heat loss when standing in cooler water. This behavior allows them to maintain their body temperature efficiently while resting or staying alert in their wetland habitats.

During our dinghy ride at Punta Espinoza, on Fernandina Island, we found ourselves in the calm waters of a nearly hidden bay. To our delight, a fearless Galápagos penguin swam toward us. What caught our attention was that the penguin seemed to be swimming with only one flipper, while the other rested above its feathers, out of the water. We wondered if something was wrong or if it had a broken wing. However, after a few minutes, the penguin began swimming effortlessly, enjoying the tranquility of this paradisiacal spot.

Today, we visited *El Trapiche* farm, where we were warmly welcomed by the owner, Mr. Adriano Cabrera. One of the most fascinating moments of the tour was when Mr. Cabrera demonstrated his ingenious method of removing the dried coffee husk.
After the coffee seeds had been previously crushed to pulverize the husk, there were still remnants of the dried shell clinging to the seeds. Using a fan, Mr. Cabrera skillfully blew away the remaining husk, separating it from the coffee beans in a simple yet effective way. It was a captivating process that left us all impressed by the traditional techniques still used on the farm.

While snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, we witnessed a fascinating encounter. A sea turtle gracefully approached a jellyfish floating just beneath the surface. With deliberate movements, the turtle opened its beak-like mouth and began to devour the jellyfish.
The gelatinous creature’s tentacles drifted in the water as the turtle bit through its translucent body, undeterred by the jellyfish’s stinging defenses. It was a striking display of nature’s balance, as the turtle enjoyed its meal in the calm of the ocean.

What a fascinating sighting!
At Espumilla Beach on Santiago Island, a thrilling moment unfolded as a juvenile brown pelican attempted to devour a sizable mullet. The pelican’s distinctive pouched bill came into action, showcasing its remarkable adaptability as a fishing tool.
As the pelican dove into the ocean, its pouched bill expanded, forming a spacious, net-like cavity. The flexible pouch, capable of holding up to 3 gallons of water, scooped up the mullet and surrounding seawater. The pelican’s bill acted as a makeshift fishing net, trapping the fish inside.
With the mullet securely enclosed, the pelican lifted its head, and the pouch began to contract. The water drained out, leaving the fish flailing within. The pelican’s throat muscles then worked to swallow the mullet whole, but the size proved challenging.
The scene was both captivating and comical, highlighting the pelican’s remarkable feeding mechanism. Despite the struggle, the young pelican’s persistence demonstrated its determination to master this essential skill.

The Galapagos tortoises, particularly the males, engage in a fascinating and somewhat ritualistic behavior when they fight for dominance or mating rights. One of the most notable displays of this competition involves stretching their necks. In these encounters, two tortoises will face each other and begin to stretch their necks as high as they can, attempting to tower over their opponent.
This neck-stretching contest is a way for the tortoises to establish dominance without resorting to physical violence, which could potentially cause harm. The winner of these neck-stretching battles is the tortoise with the longer neck, as it signifies strength and superiority. The tortoise with the shorter neck will usually back down, acknowledging the dominance of the longer-necked opponent.
This behavior is an excellent example of how animal species develop unique methods for resolving conflicts and establishing hierarchies within their communities. In the case of the Galapagos tortoises, the length of the neck plays a crucial role not only in foraging, as it allows them to reach higher vegetation, but also in social interactions and mating rituals.

In the afternoon at Black Turtle Cove on Santa Cruz Island, we observed a fascinating gathering of cattle egrets nestled among the small islands of red mangrove trees. These striking white birds stood out vividly against the lush green foliage and the dark, twisting roots of the mangroves.
