A UNIQUE BOAT FROM THE PYRAMID AGE DISCOVERED AT ABUSIR BY THE EXPEDITION OF THE CZECH INSTITUTE OF EGYPTOLOGY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Antiquities Minister, Dr. Mamdouh Eldamaty declared an important discovery of an old kingdom boat at Abusir area whose seemingly very important owner was highly connected with the royal family.
The mission of the Czech Institute of Egyptology, Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague has recently made an unexpected discovery at Abusir South that once again highlights the importance of this cemetery of the Old Kingdom officials. Work commenced in 2009 on a large mastaba termed AS 54, followed by several seasons of excavations. Its exceptional size (52.60 x 23.80 m), orientation, architectural details, as well as the name of king Huni (Third Dynasty,) discovered on one of the stone bowls buried in the northern underground chamber, indicate the high social standing of the person buried in the main (so far unlocated) shaft. Unfortunately, his name remains unknown due to the bad state of preservation of the cruciform chapel.
Clearing the area south of Mastaba AS 54 revealed an 18 m-long wooden boat during the 2015 excavation season. It was lying on tafla, covered with the wind-blown sand. Although the boat is situated almost 12 m south of Mastaba AS 54, its orientation, length, and the pottery collected from its interior, make a clear connection between the structure and the vessel, both dating to the very end of the Third or beginning of the Fourth Dynasty, ca 2550 BC.
While extremely fragile, the roughly 4,500 year old planks will shed new light on ship building in ancient Egypt. The wooden planks were joined by wooden pegs that are still visible in their original position. Extraordinarily, the desert sand has preserved the plant fiber battens which covered the planking seams. Some of the ropes that bound the boat together are also still in their original position with all their details intact, which is a unique discovery in the study of ancient Egyptian boats. All these minute details are of the highest importance, since most of the ancient Egyptian boats and ships have survived either in poor state of preservation, or were dismantled in pieces. During the 2016 season, the Czech Institute of Egyptology will launch a project, together with experts from the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) at Texas A&M University, to study the techniques used in the hull’s construction.
The construction details are not the only features that make the boat unique. The habit of burying boats beside mastabas began in the Early Dynastic Period. This phenomenon has been well documented for royal structures, as well as for some tombs belonging to members of the royal family, the elite of society. Dr. Miroslav Bárta, director of the mission notes: “In fact, this is a highly unusual discovery since boats of such a size and construction were, during this period, reserved solely for top members of the society, who usually belonged to the royal family. This suggests the potential for additional discoveries during the next spring season.”
Scholars debate the purpose of Egyptian boat burials. Did they serve the deceased in the afterlife, or might they have functioned as symbolical solar barques, used during the journey of the owner through the underworld. The Old Kingdom kings adopted the earlier tradition, and often had several boats buried within their pyramid complexes. Unfortunately, most of the pits have been found already empty of any timber, others contained little more than brown dust in the shape of the original boat. The only exception were the two boats of Khufu that have survived, and were reconstructed or are in the process of reconstruction.
However, there was no boat of such dimensions from the Old Kingdom found in a non-royal context, until the new discovery at Abusir. “It is by all means a remarkable discovery. The careful excavation and recording of the Abusir boat will make a considerable contribution to our understanding of ancient Egyptian watercraft and their place in funerary cult. And where there is one boat, there very well may be more.” adds director of the excavations, Miroslav Bárta.
The boat by the southern wall of Mastaba AS 54 indicates the extraordinary social position of the owner of the tomb. Since it is not located adjacent to a royal pyramid, the owner of the mastaba was probably not a member of the royal family: both the size of the tomb, as well as the presence of the boat itself, however, clearly places the deceased within the elite of his time with strong connections to the reigning pharaoh.

Generous discovery in Aswan!!

Egypt's Antiquities Minister, Dr. Mamdouh Eldamaty declared the discovery of SIX Late Period tombs (26th Dynasty) at the Aga Khan Mausoleum perimeter, west of Aswan. This magnificent discovery came within the framework of the excavation works performed by the Egyptian Mission in Aswan and Nubia.

Eldamaty clarified that a group of stone and wooden sarcophagi containing the mummies of their owners as well as fiance statues representing the four sons of Horus, a group of amulets and small wooden statues of Horus the Falcon were also discovered.

Eldamaty further added that this discovery is extremely important because it is the first Late Period discovery at the Ancient Cemetery in Aswan. The previously discovered tombs at this area date back to the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms.

On the other hand, General Director of Aswan and Nubia Archaeological Area, Nasr Salama said that most of the discovered tombs begin with a 30 steps stair leading to the tomb's main entrance. Each tomb is divided inside into three or four rooms with no inscriptions. Salama also pointed out that the technique used in digging the newly discovered tombs is completely different from the tombs of the same area.

Head of the Egyptian Mission working at the area, Mostafa Khalil finally added that this discovery will help in recognizing the architectural style of that period pointing out that the area was subjected to illegal digging lately and some burials were unearthed by thieves at the area.

フランス隊(IFAO)南サッカラで第6王朝時代ペピ2世時代(古王国時代)の2人の神官AnkhtiとSabiの墓を発見!

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Two ancient tombs still containing the remains of their owners were uncovered in Saqara, Declared Dr. Eldamaty today. The first one belongs to “Ankh Ti” and the second to “Sabi”; two priests contemporary to the reign of King Pepi II (2240-2150 B.C) of the 6th Dynasty. The discovery was made, added Eldamaty during the excavation works performed by the IFAO mission (L’Institut Français d’archéologie Orientale) in collaboration with the Ministry of Antiquities at the site of Tabit El-Geish, south of Sakkara.

Director of the French mission, Dr.Vassil Dobrev, clarified that both tombs have many offering scenes to ancient Egyptian Gods, adding that the colors of the scenes are still extraordinarily preserved.

Eldamaty added that the team work succeeded in reaching the burial chambers of the two tombs, and found the remains of the two tomb owners scattered, a matter indicating that both tombs were subject to vandalism and theft during the 7th or 8th Dynasty.

From his side, Head of the Ancient Egyptian Sector, Dr. Yousef Khalifa elucidated that despite of vandalism, the team work discovered some funerary tools beside the skeletons; a number of alabaster jars as well as colored limestone offerings models and pottery were found.

Dr. Vassil Dobrev, said that the upper part of the two tombs was built with mud brick while the burial chambers were cut into the white limestone bedrock indicating that the burial chamber of “Sabi” was found in a 6m. deep shaft while that of “Ankh Ti” was found in a 12m. deep shaft.

General Director of Giza Archaeological Area, Kamal Wahid pointed out that the “Ankh Ti” funerary room was decorated with many scenes representing the ancient Egyptian offerings, particularly the huge jars containing the seven sacred oils essential in the resurrection process. Lists of names and quantities of offerings also appear on the left wall followed by a false door and different forms of offerings (meat, birds, bread, vegetables, roses, milk and beer … etc.)

General Director of Saqara Archaeological Area, ‘Alaa El-Shahat finally added that there is a great similarity between the “Sabi” tomb and the first one for it also has the same offering scenes and lists.

Another amazing discover in Luxor!!

Within the framework of bilateral cooperation between the Ministry of Antiquities and the American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE), and during the excavation works at the open courtyard of the tomb TT110 in Qurna, another intact tomb was discovered. The previously discovered last week tomb belonged to "Amenhotep" who is also called Rebiu, the door-keeper of god Amun.

The new tomb is T shaped and its owner is " Sa-Mut" and most probably dates to the 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom . It contains a number of beautiful scenes painted on plaster with extremely bright colors. There are scenes representing everyday life activities, celebration scenes and other scenes representing the tomb owner and his wife " Ta Khaeet" . The tomb consists of a transverse hall and unfinished side chambers with shafts. It was robbed in antiquity and some of the texts and scenery were deliberately damaged.

The new tomb lies to the east of TT110 and shares the same courtyard; the door of the newly discovered tomb opens to the north, and to the south of the door of the first tomb of (Amenhotep, Rebiu).
