The Prince Alwaleed Center for American Studies and Research (CASAR) cordially invites you to attend the following talk titled "The Gaza War: Implications for the United States and Egypt" Featuring AUC Professors David Dumke and Karim Haggag moderated by CASAR Director Mark Deets on Monday, November 20, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm in GAPP Executive Education Room P090, AlJameel/BEC Building, plaza level, beside the AUC bus gate.

Professors Dumke and Haggag will deliberate about the current daily escalations and the regional and international repercussions of the Gaza War.

David Dumke is Executive Director of the Office of Global Perspectives & International Initiatives at the University of Central Florida (UCF), and a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at American University in Cairo for the Fall 2023 semester. He was the founding director of UCF’s Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd Program for Strategic Research & Studies, as well as the Office of Middle East and South Asia Initiatives. He teaches Middle East history, U.S. foreign policy, and American politics, and has written extensively on these subjects. He also is host and executive producer of WUCF-TV’s award-winning Global Perspectives (Public Broadcasting Service). He spent the early part of his career in the U.S. Congress, working for Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell (D-Michigan), Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan), and Rep. Fred Upton (R-Michigan). He has extensive experience in the Middle East and North Africa working with NGOs, think tanks, the private-sector, and regional governments – including the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Ambassador Karim Haggag is a career Egyptian diplomat with over 25 years of service in Egypt’s diplomatic corps and is currently serving as a professor of practice at the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at The American University in Cairo (AUC). Throughout his career, he has served in numerous capacities focusing on US-Egyptian relations, Middle East regional security, arms control and non-proliferation, and Arab-Israeli diplomacy. His assignments have included serving as director of the Egyptian Press and Information Office in Washington DC. From 2002-2007; the Office of the Presidency in Cairo was responsible for US-Egyptian relations and economic policy coordination (2002-2007); and the political section of Egypt’s embassy in Washington (1997-2002) where he was responsible for politico-military affairs and the Middle East peace process. In addition to his diplomatic assignments, Haggag was also a visiting professor with the Near East and South Asia Center for Strategic Studies at the National Defense University in Washington DC (2011-2013) and is currently a non-resident fellow at the Middle East Initiative at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

On March 21, 2019, Dr Alexander Neidermeier, DAAD Visiting Professor at Cairo University gave a public lecture “Between Values and Security: Migration as Multi-Dimensional Challenge to the EU and MENA-States”. Dr Neidermeier highlighted the progression of EU capabilities and institutionaliation, EU member state contexts, relations, legal issues and impact in the MENA region. On February 5, 2019, MESC co-hosted with the Japan Institute of International Affairs an event titled Egypt - Japan Cooperation in the Evolving Strategic Context of the Middle East and Asia, supported by the Embassy of Japan in Cairo. The event brought together a number of presentations on topics including 'Towards Free and Open Indo Pacific Ocean: New Perspectives from Japan and its Possible Implication to the Middle East Region' and 'Lessons from Japanese - Egyptian Cooperation'. The keynote was given by H.E. Ambassador Kenichiro Sasae, Former Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan and President of the Japan Institute of International Affairs.

This course introduces postgraduate students to the history, institutions and foreign policy frameworks of the EU and the specific issues raised by contemporary EU interactions in the Southern Neighborhood (Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia). We consider the complexities of the EU policy-making process across 28 member states. We also assess various EU foreign policy initiatives, such as the European Neighborhood Policy, and the impact of new developments within the EU such as Brexit, and across the neighborhood, such as the Arab Spring.
