Was Cleopatra laid to rest in Taposiris Magna?

If only we knew. Carol (our Founder) and Rasha (one of our brilliant guides) went to take a look for themselves!

Taposiris Magna holds a special allure because of its potential connection with one of the most famous figures of ancient Egypt, Cleopatra VII. The city gained contemporary attention due to the tantalizing possibility that it might contain the final resting place of Cleopatra.

The quest to uncover the truth about Cleopatra's burial site led to excavations at Taposiris Magna, where archaeologists have unearthed intriguing evidence. Among the discoveries are coins bearing Cleopatra's image, as well as fragments of statues and other artifacts associated with the Ptolemaic period. Additionally, recent excavations have revealed underground chambers and tombs, sparking renewed interest in the site's potential as a royal necropolis.

While these findings have fueled speculation, definitive evidence linking Taposiris Magna to Cleopatra remains elusive.

Want to see for yourself? then join us on our Queens and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt' 14 day tour in January 2025. You'll be able to visit this site (and not many visitors get to do this) and learn more about Cleopatra.

The Old Cataract, Aswan is one of our favourites, and features in a number of our tours. We never tired of seeing Christie's writing desk, and the wicker chair we image her sitting in while she worked on her novel 'Death on the Nile'.

Step deeper into a story by staying in a hotel where an author you admired once lived and wrote.

Interested in seeing sights other tourists usually don't get to?

With over 30 years of experience, our tours reach parts of Egypt that others don't: like Taposiris Magna.

Historic Hub: Taposiris Magna, near Alexandria, was a bustling city in ancient Egypt, thriving during the Ptolemaic period.

Strategic Port: Positioned on the Mediterranean, Taposiris Magna served as a vital port city, facilitating trade across the region.

Cleopatra's Enigma: Speculation surrounds Taposiris Magna as a potential burial site for Cleopatra though evidence remains inconclusive, but you never what time will reveal.

Cultural Fusion: Reflecting Egyptian and Graeco-Roman styles, the site showcases a blend of cultural influences from the Ptolemaic era.

We'll be visiting this site as part of our Queens and Goddeses of Ancient tour in January 2025. If you're interested in hearing say hi in the comments and we'll be in touch.

Bastet is top of the ratings!

If you were an Egyptian Goddess would you be Bastet?

"The Ancient Egyptian cat goddess of the home. Although you might seem cute and fluffy, you'll go to any lengths to protect those you love from harm. Despite this you still like to have a good time, especially at night, since you're also the goddess of pleasure and the moon. You have many worshippers across the world and you love to look after them".
