We were working on an article for a special Dahab magazine. :) Guess it's a good moment to share a part of it:
🌀 No matter how much you like dogs – if they don't approach you, don't approach them. 🌀
Dogs get enough information about you just by using their nose. If they see and smell you nearby, and decide not to come and say hi, respect their decision. Street dogs are constantly surrounded by people and other dogs, and have the right to take their space when needed.
🌀If you visit Dahab with your dog, make sure to book a pet friendly accommodation – and keep your dog on a leash when outside. 🌀
Free roaming owned dogs are usually the cause of most of dog related issues in Dahab: dog fights (with other owned dogs or when crossing a street dog pack territory), excessive barking, goat chasing, unwanted puppy litters – and sadly also abandoned dogs in the streets.
Not all people are equally comfortable with dogs being around. To avoid unnecessary incidents, follow a few simple rules:
➡️ Don't stare at dogs. In dog world, looking into one’s eyes is impolite, and equals provocation.
➡️ If a dog starts running after you, don't move. Stay quiet and calm. The best is to stand still, looking down or away. Keep breathing normally and wait until the dog loses interest in you.
➡️ When eating outside, don’t feed the dogs leftovers at the restaurant or in the middle of a big crowd. You can ask the restaurant staff to feed the dogs later, or go feed them to a more distant location.
➡️ If visiting Dahab with your dog, keep it leashed in public areas, to avoid any kind of confrontations.
➡️ When leaving Dahab – make sure your dog leaves with you.
