The Grand Egyptian Museum is a huge project that took lots of time, effort and money.

GEM was built on a huge land area of 117 acres which definitely costs a big budget.

The Museum cost started with an estimation of $500 million but after the interference of the global pandemic and many other aspects the final cost now reached over $1 billion.

Before visiting the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), let’s introduce you to the 4 different galleries of the museum:

- Predynastic hall which will include pieces that up to 3100 BCE
- Old Kingdom hall where you will find the pyramid builders artifacts
- Middle Kingdom and New Kingdom hall which will include the era of Tutankhamun, Ramses and other great pharaohs.

The GEM design is something fascinating!

As the GEM is a huge museum for the whole world, they had to choose the best design through a big Competition in 2002.

The proposed designs were around 1,550 architectural designs coming from 83 different countries around the world.

In the end, the Heneghan Peng company which was located in Dublin won the competition and was awarded $250,000.

I assure you will have an unforgettable experience visiting such a huge edifice.

The GEM is a huge museum built in a triangle shape

The museum is located near to the site of the great pyramids of Giza, only two kilometers away to the west.

The walls of the museum are constructed to line up with the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Menkaure to create this connection with the pyramids.

GEM will host thousands of precious artifacts from Egypt’s ancient history

At the GEM’s main entrance, you will find a 30-foot-high granite statue for one of the greatest pharaohs, King Ramses II.

This statue was located in the middle of a famous traffic circle in Cairo called Ramses Square.

They transferred this huge statue plus more than 100,000 artifacts to be presented in the Grand Egyptian Museum.
