CLUSTER celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Kodak Passageway inauguration. This pilot project was part of a broader research initiative by CLUSTER supported by DEDI and CKU in collaboration with local stakeholders. Kodak Passageway became a landmark in Downtown Cairo, accommodating diverse users while offering an alternative approach to revitalizing Downtown public space.

Kodak Passageway won the Cairo Design Award 2017 for Landscape Projects and was featured in some Egyptian dramas; visit our website to know more about this project.

تحتفل كلستر بمرور 10 سنوات على افتتاح ممر كوداك في وسط البلد. يعد هذا المشروع الاسترشادي جزءًا من مبادرة عمرانية أوسع قامت كلستر بتطويرها بدعم من DEDI وCKU بالتعاون مع الاطراف المعنية بالمنطقة. يعتبر ممر كوداك اليوم علامة بارزة في وسط البلد، حيث يستوعب استخدامات متنوعة، ويطرح إطاراً بديلاً لتطوير الفراغات العامة في وسط المدينة.

CLUSTER, Orient for Film & Theater Productions (Cairo), and THISS Studio (London) are excited to share the initiation of the "Anhar: Culture and Climate Platform" program, supported by Art Jameel and the British Council Egypt, exploring the role of art and design to address culture and climate. The program started with a week-long codesign workshop alongside tours to relevant parks together with art and culture spaces. With ALONG THE LINE project (2022-23) as a catalyst and inspiration, the proposed designs explored structures that can add a visual landmark to the park – contrasting with the prominent advertising billboards on site - and that also can accommodate a stage for events, backstage technical requirements, storage, and other infrastructure necessary for art and cultural programs. The designs also aimed at experimenting with durable and recyclable materials.

After a week of ideation, design generation and prototyping, the team organized a participatory workshop at the Child’s Park in Agouza to open the room for public discussion and participation in further developing the installation for art and cultural programs in the park.

أخذاً بعين الاعتبار مشروع على طول الخط(2022-2023) كمصدر الهام، ركزت التصاميم على إنشاء هيكل رأسي يمثل نقطة جذب بصري للحديقة بهدف التباين مع اللوحات الإعلانية المجاورة. على التصميم المقترح أن يكون متعدد الإستخدامات ، وأن يشمل مساحة للعروض المسرحية و الأدائية، والاحتياجات التقنية خلف الكواليس، ومناطق تخزين، وعناصر خدمية ضرورية للبرامج الفنية والثقافية, مع التركيز على استخدام مواد معادة التدوير

بعد أسبوع من تطوير التصاميم والنماذج الأولية، نظّم الفريق ورشة عمل تشاركية في "حديقة الطفل" بمنطقة العجوزة لإتاحة الفرصة للنقاش العام والمشاركة المجتمعية في تطوير الفكرة

In collaboration with the The Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt, CLUSTER designed and produced a walking and bus tour map for the event celebrating the 90-year friendship treaty between Egypt and Switzerland. The map, "Alp O Nil," traces the Swiss landmarks in Cairo designed and built by Swiss explorers, businessmen, confectioneries, and hoteliers. The tour was guided by Swiss Ambassador Yvonne Baumann and the Swiss filmmaker Sandra Gysi.

احتفالا بمعاهدة الصداقة التسعين بين مصر وسويسرا، وبالتعاون مع السفارة السويسرية في مصر، قام مختبر عمران القاهرة - كلستر بتصميم خريطة "ألب أوه نيل" في شكل مسار ثقافي يوثق المعالم السويسرية في القاهرة التي قام بتصميمها أو بنائها مستكشفون ورحّالة ورجال أعمال من مطورين ومؤسسي فنادق ومحال حلوى شهيرة من سويسرا. وقد قامت كلا من السفيرة السويسرية إيفون باومان والمخرجة السويسرية ساندرا غيزي بدور الريادة والإرشاد بهذه الجولة

CLUSTER hosted on November 10th, 2024 its 24th session of the CLUSTER Talks series titled: ‘Cairo’s 15-Minute Cities: Framing the Concept’s Manifestations in Diverse Urban Settings’ by Reem Cherif. Cherif is an architect, urban researcher, and currently a Ph.D. candidate at Trinity College, Dublin. Her research focuses on urban mobility and public spaces in inclusive cities, employing visual ethnography and participatory methods. The presentation discussed the concept of the 15-minute city, which encourages local access to daily needs through active travel and public transport, aiming for sustainable and inclusive urban spaces. In Cairo, this idea appears in various forms, and the talk explores its context, planning, design, and usage through comparative case studies.

Reimagining our cities: Alternative narratives through Mapping

In collaboration with Makana, a collective working towards social and spatial justice in Jordanian cities, CLUSTER organized a two-day session and workshop at the MMAG Foundation, Jordan. On the first day, CLUSTER presented several projects that illustrate its approaches to researching and mapping that adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the city and public space. On the second day, CLUSTER and Makana organized a tour in Jabal Amman and a workshop for recording and producing sound maps of the city. Through a collective path, the participants documented and analyzed how our auditory perceptions can be translated into participatory sound maps that include diverse experiences and perspectives of the same city.

شارك مختبر عمران القاهرة « كلستر» بالتعاون مع مجموعة "مكانة" بالأردن في تنظيم جلسة وورشة في مؤسسة مماغ عبر يومين متتاليين. قامت كلستر فى اليوم الأول بعرض عدد من المشاريع التي توضح مقاربات كلستر في الرصد والتوثيق المكاني كأداة للكشف عن التاريخ غير المستغل للمدن وذلك من خلال جلسة حوارية مع المشاركين. كما قامت " كلستر" و"مكانة" في اليوم الثاني بتنظيم جولة ميدانية وورشة تسجيل و انتاج خرائط صوتية للمدينة. من خلال مسار جماعي قام المشاركون توثيق وتحليل كيف تؤثر المشاهد الصوتية في عمّان على إدراك المكان، وعلى طبيعة التفاعل معه. كما عبر المسار في جبل عمّان عن مساحات مختلفة، عامة أو شبه عامة، يمكن ترجمة إدراكنا السمعي فيها إلى خرائط صوتية تشاركية تتضمن تجارب ووجهات نظر مختلفة للمدينة.

CLUSTER was assigned by Action For Hope العمل للأمل to design and produce the display units of the "On the Tracks of Music" exhibition in Amman and Beirut. The exhibition in Amman took place at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. Due to the ongoing aggression in Lebanon, the exhibition in Beirut has been postponed.

The exhibitions document the folk music of 11 communities in the Levant and Mesopotamia by displaying the traditional musical instruments, their raw materials, and replicas to engage with. "On the Tracks of Music" was a year-and-a-half project by Action for Hope that involved field research by scholars, musical training from folk musicians, workshops on crafting traditional instruments, and performances by trainees and renowned artists. The exhibitions in Amman and Baghdad, and the launch of a website showcasing the research materials are the final stage of this project.

The design concept prioritizes compactness for efficient space utilization and transportation, flexibility for presenting the instruments and materials, and simplicity for easy assembly and disassembly. The display units were inspired by the Pianola, or the Music Box which began to be heard in the streets from the late 19th century in Greece before there were radios or gramophones. The Pianola was a pop-up source of entertainment and an inclusive one when there were few accessible entertainment houses. As the musician finishes the performance, he packs his instrument back on his shoulder, ready to bring joy to the next crowd. Reflecting on the Pianola’s journey, the exhibition is designed to be mobile, set to travel to Iraq, Lebanon, and Jordan, delighting audiences with the pianola as a showcase for traditional instruments.

تم تكليف مختبر عمران القاهرة "كلستر" بتصميم وإنتاج وتركيب وحدات عرض معرض "على خطى الموسيقى" في كل من عمان وبيروت. أقيم المعرض في عمان في المتحف الوطني للفنون الجميلة الأردني. وفي ظل الاعتداءات المستمرة في لبنان والاضطرابات الإقليمية، تم تأجيل المعرض في بيروت في الوقت الراهن.

يوثق المعرض الموسيقى الشعبية لـ 11 تجمعاً سكانياً في بلاد الشام وبلاد ما بين النهرين من خلال عرض الآلات الموسيقية التقليدية وموادها الخام ونماذج للالات يمكن العزف عليها. تم تنظيم مشروع "على خطى الموسيقى” عبر عام ونصف من خلال جمعية "العمل للأمل"، وشمل المشروع أبحاثًا ميدانية، وتدريبًا موسيقيًا من موسيقيين شعبيين، وورش عمل لتصنيع الآلات التقليدية، وعروضًا من المتدربين وفنانين مشهورين. تُعتبر المعارض في عمان وبغداد وإطلاق موقع إلكتروني يعرض المواد البحثية المرحلة النهائية من هذا المشروع.

ترتكز فكرة التصميم على الوحدات التي يمكن طيها ودمجها واعادة تركيبها المرة تلو الأخرى من أجل تحقيق استخدام فعال للمساحات والنقل، والمرونة في عرض الآلات والمواد، والبساطة في تجميع وتفكيك الوحدات. استلهم شكل وحدات العرض من صندوق الموسيقى، أو البيانولا التي بدأت تُسمع في الشوارع من أواخر القرن ١٩ في اليونان قبل ظهور الراديو. كانت البيانولا مصدرًا شائعًا للترفيه، وشاملاً في وقت كانت فيه دور الترفيه محدودة. وعندما ينتهي الموسيقي من الأداء، يضع آلته مرة أخرى على كتفه، مستعدًا لإدخال البهجة على الجمهور التالي في حي هادئ آخر. ومع التفكير في هذه الرحلة، تم تصميم المعرض ليكون متنقلًا، حيث من المقرر أن يسافر إلى العراق ولبنان والأردن، حيث تضفي الآلات الشعبية المعروضة في وحدة البيانولا المتعة على الزائرين.

CLUSTER is pleased to announce that it has hosted on October 14th, 2024 its 23rd session of the CLUSTER Talks series titled: ‘Can spaces be neutral? A territorial approach for studying the neutralisation of space in housing projects’ by Mohamed Abotera, PhD (University of Antwerp 2024), who is an urban researcher and an architect with professional experience in cultural and urban development. He studied architectural design in Egypt then obtained a MA degree in architecture, cultural identity and globalisation from the University of Westminster in 2007.

The talk discusses spaces that are prohibited from having multiplicity of meanings and also prohibiting the co-production and decision making of different stakeholders. This process of enforcing singularity on public and residential spaces and the reduction of collectivity is described by Abotera as the neutralisation of space. The talk departed from the standpoint of territoriality and scripting of space, mainly focusing on examples from al-Asmarat housing project and Maspero in Cairo, in order to understand the role of design in this process of neutralisation and also in looking for potential effectiveness.

استضاف مختبر عمران القاهرة للتصميم والدراسات ا في 14 أكتوبر 2024 ندوة بعنوان: "هل يمكن أن تكون المساحات محايدة؟ نهج إقليمي لدراسة تحييد الفضاء في مشاريع الإسكان" لمحمد أبو طيرة ضمن برنامج مناقشات كلستر. يتمتع ابو طيرة الباحث العمرانى والمهندس المعماري بخبرة مهنية في التنمية الثقافية والعمرانية، حيث درس التصميم المعماري في مصر ثم حصل على درجة الماجستير في الهندسة المعمارية والهوية الثقافية والعولمة من جامعة وستمنستر عام 2007 ودرجة الدكتوراه من جامعة أنتويرب 2024.

تناقش المحاضرة طرحا للمساحات التي يُحظر عليها تعدد في المعاني وتحظر أيضًا الإنتاج المشترك واتخاذ القرارات من قبل الأطراف المعنية المختلفة. يصف أبو طيرة عملية فرض الآحادية على المساحات العامة والسكنية، حيث الحد من الجماعية، بأنها تحييد للفراغ. انطلقت المحاضرة من وجهة النظر الإقليمية وتخطيط المساحات، وركزت بشكل رئيسي على أمثلة من مشروع إسكان الأسمرات وماسبيرو في القاهرة، نحو تحليل نقدي لدور التصميم في عملية التحييد.

CLUSTER (Cairo), AP+E, and Studio René Boer (Amsterdam) are proud to announce that their joint design-build project “Community Care Vehicle” is being displayed at the Urban Expo during the World Urban Forum 12. The project intends to improve the quality of transportation of patients in non-critical conditions and wheelchair users, in an attempt to integrate and complement the formal institutional system with local practices.

You are invited to join the panel discussion on Friday, November 8th, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, which will include representatives from the design team, manufacturers, a local NGO to operate it, as well as the supporting partner, the Creative Industries Fund NL. In addition to challenges facing design and implementation issues, the panel addresses institutional and legal frameworks to bridge the gap between international codes and informal practices.

As part of the Parallel Program World Urban Forum 12, CLUSTER and Loom are proud to announce the opening of the Grounded Urban Practices exhibition at the Egypt Designers School, 9 Amer Street, Dokki. The exhibition features the outcome of the research conducted on Grounded Urban Practices in Cairo and Amsterdam/Rotterdam in 2017-8, and in Berlin in 2019-20, in addition to a series of new practices and initiatives in African cities and in the Netherlands in 2024. A critical discussion will take place on Tuesday November 5th in the morning 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The exhibition opening event at 7:00 pm will also include a panel discussion with Omar Nagati (CLUSTER), Khensani Jurczok-de Klerk (Matri-Archi) and Katía Truijen (Loom — practice for cultural transformation).

فى إطار البرنامج الموازى للمنتدى الحضرى العالمى، ينظم مختبر عمران القاهرة (CLUSTER) ولوم (Loom) في أمستردام معرض الممارسات العمرانية المتجذرة “بمدرسة المصممين المصرين” الواقعة ب 9 شارع عامر بالدقى يوم الثلاثاء 5 نوفمبر. يسلط المعرض الضوء على عدد من هذه الممارسات كنتاج لدراسة نقدية تم إجرائها بين القاهرة وامستردام فى عامى 2017 و2018 و فى برلين فى عامى 2019 و2020. وقد تم لاحقا فى عام 2024 ضم عدد من الممارسات والمبادرات الإضافية بالعديد من المدن الإفريقية وأخرى باوروبا، حيث سيتم عقد حلقة نقاشية بين جميع المشاركين والجمهور ما بين الساعة العاشرة صباحا والثانية بعد الظهر. ويسبق إفتتاح المعرض فى الساعة السابعة مساء ندوة نقاشية تضم كلا من: عمر نجاتى من (CLUSTER) خنساني يوركزوك دي كليرك (Matri-Archi) بجوهانسبرج وكاتيا تروجين (Loom) بأمستردام

Early November the 12th World Urban Forum is taking place in the Egyptian capital Cairo. Parallel to the official event, two leading urban research and design initiatives, CLUSTER (Cairo) and Loom (Amsterdam/Rotterdam) are hosting an alternative program engaging more grounded, critical and community-led approaches to urban issues in the city center and its peripheries. The Parallel Program will take place from 5 to 8 November 2024 in various locations across Cairo, bringing together 'grounded urban practices' from Tunis, Tanger, Johannesburg, Addis Abeba, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Cairo itself.

يُعقد المنتدى الحضري العالمي الثاني عشر في أوائل نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني في العاصمة المصرية القاهرة. وبالتوازي مع الفعاليات الرسمية، تستضيف مبادرتان رائدتان في مجال البحث والتصميم الحضري، هما مختبر عمران القاهرة (CLUSTER) ولوم (Loom) في أمستردام، برنامجًا نقديًا موازيًا يتبنى ممارسات متجذرة فى واقعها العمرانى المحلى بالقلب الحضرى للمدينة وأطرافها. سيقام البرنامج الموازي من 5 إلى 7 نوفمبر/تشرين الثاني 2024 فى مواقع مختلفة بالقاهرة، بمشاركة ممثلين عن ممارسات عمرانية متجذرة من تونس وطنجة وجوهانسبرغ وأديس أبابا وأمستردام وروتردام والقاهرة نفسها.

CLUSTER is proud to announce the successful implementation and installation of the 6 October Park’s gate signage in Agouza, as part of the “Reviving Vintage Signage” project. Additionally, the project involved designing smaller way-finding signs placed throughout the park and rebranding the park, resulting in a new visual identity and style that aligns with CLUSTER's previous award-winning intervention, "Along-the-Line”.

The project is supported by the Julius Baer Foundation's Wealth Inequality Initiative and is implemented by CLUSTER. It was designed by Maha Hesham and manufactured by local craftsmen in Ard al-Liwa.

Bridging Inequality through Creative Economy in Informal Areas (BICEIA) is a project connecting the designers and manufacturers in Cairo’s formal economy and with the artisans and craftspeople in the informal economy. It fosters collaboration that develop skills, market products, and connect creative talent to income opportunities in border distribution networks

يشرفنا الإعلان عن التنفيذ الناجح وتثبيت لافتات مدخل بوابة حديقة 6 أكتوبر في العجوزة، كجزء من مشروع "إحياء اللافتات القديمة". تضمن المشروع ايضا تصميم لافتات أصغر حجمًا كارشادات موجودة في مناطق متفرقة من الحديقة كما تم إعادة تسمية الحديقة، مما ساهم فى تشكيل هوية بصرية جديدة وطراز يتماشى مع تدخل كلستر السابق "على طول الخط" فى الحديقة والحائز على جائزة القاهرة للتصميم .

هذا المشروع مقدم بدعم من مبادرة عدم المساواة في الثروة التابع لمؤسسة جوليوس باير، و من تنفيذ كلستر وتصميم مها هشام وقد قام بالتصنيع حرفيون محليون في أرض اللواء.

يسعى مشروع الاقتصاد الإبداعي في المناطق غير الرسمية كمدخل لتضييق الفجوات (BICEIA) الى الربط بين المصممين والمصنعين في الاقتصاد الرسمي في القاهرة مع الحرفيين في الاقتصاد غير الرسمي حيث تعزيز التعاون وتطوير المهارات، وتسويق المنتجات، وربط المواهب الإبداعية بفرص الدخل عبر قنوات التوزيع الخارجية.

CLUSTER hosted on August 20th its 22nd session of the CLUSTER Talks series titled "Towards an Integrated Mobility System: Navigating the Future of Greater Cairo's Mobility Systems" by Hassan Hussin, a multidisciplinary Mobility Consultant, Urban researcher, Planner, Lecturer, and Architect.

The talk aimed to provide valuable insights into Cairo’s current mobility landscape, including existing systems and ongoing mega projects, and their implications for future urban transportation. The talk also explored the concept of sustainable urban mobility and investigated how integrated mobility systems can offer comprehensive solutions to tackle the challenges Cairo’s mobility system is facing.

نظم مختبر عمران القاهرة للتصميم والدراسات (كلستر) يوم 20 أغسطس الجلسة الثانية والعشرين من سلسلة محاضرات CLUSTER Talks بعنوان "نحو نظم تنقل متكاملة: مستقبل نظم التنقل في القاهرة الكبرى"، قدمها حسن حسين، استشاري تنقل متعدد التخصصات، باحث ومخطط عمراني، محاضر، ومعماري.

هدفت المحاضرة إلى تقديم أفكار قيمة حول التطورات الحالية للتنقل في القاهرة، بما في ذلك الأنظمة القائمة والمشروعات الضخمة الجارية، وتأثيراتها على النقل العمراني في المستقبل. كما استكشفت المحاضرة مفهوم التنقل المستدام وناقشت كيف يمكن أن تقدم الأنظمة المتكاملة للتنقل حلولاً شاملة للتحديات التي يواجهها نظام التنقل في القاهرة.

CLUSTER is excited to announce the successful conclusion and implementation of the “Reviving Vintage Signage” project in Port Said. This initiative involved redesigning the signage for two local coffee shops, Paradise Cafe and Bambouteya.

The project is supported by the Julius Baer Foundation’s Wealth Inequality Initiative and is a collaboration between CLUSTER and Portsaid Ala Ademo, designed by 40mustaqel, and manufactured by Free Art Zone.

CLUSTER is pleased to have hosted on July 30th its 21st session of the CLUSTER Talks series titled: The Muqarnas and the Crystal: Halim’s ‘Assimilative Renewal’ by Hazem Ziada, PhD (Georgia Tech 2011), who is currently a Senior Lecturer at Manchester School of Architecture (UK), Flux Atelier. Ziada's recent publications include: “The Digital Crowd” (Architecture and Culture, 2021); and “Strange Familiar: Unpacking al-‘Imara Typology in Cairo” (Journal of Urbanism, 2023).

The talk analyzed some of the projects and writings by Abdelhalim Ibrahim Abdelhalim (1941-2021), an eminent architect and educator whose work spanned over 50 years and shaped generations of Egyptian and Arab architects. Ziada proposed theoretical and epistemological frameworks--the Muqarnas and the Crystal being a lens--to interrogate the ways in which Abdelhalim engaged with traditional elements and modes of knowledge through contemporary forms and new sciences.

CLUSTER is proud to announce that our very own Reem Ayman and Omar Khaled have been shortlisted in the international design competition: "Under Bridge 2024: Affordable Housing Series 17th edition" by BUILDNER (https://architecturecompetitions.com/underbridge).

The project, which addresses a growing urban typology, is both innovative and grounded. The housing stock in the megacity of Cairo is predominantly located in informal areas that surround the city's peripheries, which are physically and psychologically separated from the planned districts by urban infrastructure. "Social Infrastructure for Transient Communities" proposes a modular framework of housing units, communal spaces, and public amenities that inhabit the under-utilized spaces under the bridge, aiming to reconnect the urban fabric and provide social infrastructure for the different communities in the informal areas.

CLUSTER is proud to have contributed to the Max Herz exhibition “A Life in the Service of Egypt: Max Herz Pasha” held on 22 May in the Al-Rifa'i Mosque. The exhibition was curated by Istvan Ormos and organized by the Hungarian Embassy and the National Cultural Fund of Hungary in partnership with CLUSTER under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
