The Red Sea is renowned for its abundant ancient shipwrecks, which serve as captivating reminders of the region's rich maritime history. Here are some notable ancient shipwrecks in the Red Sea:

1. The SS Thistlegorm: One of the most famous and well-preserved shipwrecks in the Red Sea, the SS Thistlegorm sank in 1941 during World War II. It was a British merchant navy ship carrying supplies for the British troops in Egypt. Today, divers can explore the various cargo that remains intact, such as tanks, trucks, motorcycles, and even train carriages.

2. The Dunraven: This British steamship sank in 1876 near Ras Mohammed in the northern part of the Red Sea. The Dunraven had an eventful history, including transporting goods between India and England. Divers can explore its remains, with intact masts and parts of the ship's structure, showcasing the impressive Victorian-era engineering.

3. The Giannis D: The Giannis D, a Greek cargo ship, met its fate in the Red Sea in 1983 due to striking the Sha'ab Abu Nuhas reef. The ship now lies on its starboard side, providing a picturesque and accessible wreck dive. The vibrant marine life and the scattered cargo of toilets, bathtubs, and vehicle parts add to the allure of this shipwreck.

4. The Salem Express: The Salem Express was a passenger ferry that tragically sank in 1991 near Safaga. The shipwreck remains largely intact and serves as a memorial to the lives lost during the incident. While it is not accessible to penetrating the wreck due to its status as a grave site, divers can explore the exterior, which attracts a variety of marine life.

5. The Ulysses: This Australian wreck was a cargo ship used during World War II before it sank near Sha'ab Abu Nuhas in the late 1950s. The wreckage is now home to an abundance of marine life, and divers can explore the ship's structures, including the engine room, cargo holds, and propeller.
