Another great article that particularly applies to the situation when teaching adaptive diving, what we think we do to what we actually do is a big distance with certain agencies and their training 🤔

In last week’s blog I mentioned that there is often a degree of difference between what the people who wrote the standards imagine the work will look like vs what actually happens.

One would question why this agency would do this in this region, could it be they are recognising that the competition may be stronger than they thought 🤔. If you read their argument all new divers are confused and frustrated by options for courses, what a load of rubbish, in my opinion.

I would like to state that if they want to 'control' an area then they take into account the financial situation for the majority of their instructors and divemasters, and recognise the true cost of being a PADI member to some of the people here!

Also the cost of the materials are actually ridiculous, if people want to have a PADI qualification then that is the individuals choice, but why take a choice away from customers and take away marketing options for already struggling dive centres. Egypt has gone through alot of troubles in the past few years and many centres closed in Covid, many still struggle to maintain their income.

Personally I did not renew my membership last year as during the covid times only certified 1 individual as Egypt closed its doors, so on contacting the said agency to ask to pay in installments due to financial restraints, I was told this was possible with an extra fee, sort of defeated the objective.

As many of you know I personally crossed over to RAID through working with Deptherapy some years ago and I will continue to work with them and Splash will only market their courses. If people specifically request PADI then we will of course respect their decision but always the choice will lie with the customer, who will be fully appraised of the options available to them.

Dive RAID International

Official response to changes in business practices

On behalf of the shareholders and management team at Dive RAID International (RAID), we wish to make it clear that our agency does NOT plan to restrict our members from conducting business however they wish and in a way that works best in their market.

We are aware that a competitive certification agency has recently decided that dive centres in certain regions who "fly its flag" may no longer offer courses from other companies. Offering alternative programs in these regions, either to offer courses NOT in their curriculum or to simply offer customer choice, will result in what amounts to expulsion.

RAID wants to assure its members that it has no plans to embrace a similar tactic. With very few restrictions, RAID allows RAID instructors and DCs choice, and encourages broad support of the dive industry as a whole community. We also believe that doing so supports the spirit and intent behind our membership to WRSTC, ISO, RTC, et al.

Our open market policy is part of doing business The RAID Way™ which includes Zero Fee-Membership, highly competitive pricing, and support for our professionals rather than unilaterally deciding to restrict their business.

We do understand that an analogy exists that while Hoover is synonymous with vacuum cleaners, consumers sometimes chose to buy Dyson because it better suits their needs. The same may be said of consumers deciding to buy scuba and freediving training. Brand primacy does not equate to the best choice for every consumer, and RAID believes in a fair, open market.

Again, RAID supports customer choice and we are comfortable being judged on our high standards, track record for safety, quality, inclusiveness, and ethical business practices.

We were devestated to learn tonight of the passing of Terry Ellis, from the early days of Emperor when Sharon was manager and saw Terry through his Divemaster course to Instructor and his recent adventures, helping us with guests, he will be always remembered for his huge personality and enthusiasm for the underwater world and of course all the geeky camera stuff, may his gentle soul rest in eternal peace, you will be missed by many Terry, gone but certainly not forgotten 😭

End of an established magazine 😕

DIVER magazine hangs up its fins.

After 48 years DIVER has ceased publishing, the current issue will be our last. We will also be closing the digital edition, website and social meed pages in the coming weeks and months.

Since the passing of DIVER’s publisher and owner Phil Nuytten earlier this year, some decisions had to be made regarding DIVER’s future and it seems appropriate to us to end with his tribute issue. This was not a quick or easy decision to make.

DIVER has been published for an incredible 48 years. That is an enormous feat of endurance in publishing. Few magazines have this longevity, which can be attributed to its readers, its advertisers, and its contributors.

Without you we simply would have never had the run we have had. Divers and non-divers alike. Readers sitting on their couch, or on a dive boat, on their morning commute, or pondering their next purchase in a dive store… anyone that has held the gloriously glossy pages and stared wondrously into the vivid images that decorate it – you made the last 48 years possible.

It has been a pleasure to produce such a well respected and well loved magazine for you all to enjoy. We aimed to educate, entertain and inspire. Our contributors worked hard to bring their experiences to life in ways that others can learn from. Our advertisers dangled the carrot of exotic destinations for us to aspire towards, and our readers spent their hard earned money to invest in those stories, adventures and opinions.

We are grateful for all your support and wish you well in your next sub aquatic adventure.

Regards,
The DIVER team
