Is this your 1st Christmas in Egypt and not sure what to expect?

Hurghada will not disappoint, expect lots of decorations and the spirit of Christmas.

In Egypt, December 25th is just like any other normal day. People go to work, businesses remain open, even some schools remain in session. This is because the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church community, like many Eastern Orthodox Churches around the globe, celebrates Christmas on January 6th and 7th — not in December.

Whilst the British celebrate on December 25th, a lot of nationalities celebrate on the 24th, therefore you’ll find your hotels will have special gala buffets and entertainment on this day.

Don’t despair, there are plenty of restaurants in town that will offer a traditional Christmas Dinner on the 25th so you won’t miss out on your sprouts!

New Years Eve is like no other, dress to impress and party until sunrise, whether you enjoy the hotels offering or visit one of the many restaurants, bars or clubs putting on something special.

🚦Getting around Hurghada🚦
A Hurghada holiday is not complete without getting out of your hotel and experiencing the city, whether this is just for a meal on the marina, few drinks in a bar or for the sights of the old town there’s something for everyone.

ℹ️ Here’s a little info of how to get about.

🚎Microbus
The main form of transport for locals, these small minibuses are cheap and plentiful.

There are no clear bus stops as such but they tend to stop on each street corner. They operate on circular routes through the city. There is no schedule, you wait for the bus and if it’s full they’ll be another long seconds later.

Hop on, hand your money to the driver or pass it through the other passengers to pass the fare down. A trip is about 5-10LE

When your approaching your destination just shout out and they’ll pull over.

The drivers can be fast and erratic so it’s not for the front hearted but certainly a fun experience to try at least once.

🚖Taxi
Street taxi’s of Hurghada are orange and blue. They are found in abundance and often the quickest way of getting around. By law the driver should have their meter on so there is no argument over fare at the end of your journey though many try to avoid them.

Therefore, we suggest agreeing the price and currency before you enter the vehicle. It’s always advisable to have small Egyptian notes stocked up for these trips.

📲Apps
A very convenient way to order your taxi by phone if you have local data- Uber, inDrive, Fawry, ABC + Careem being the most popular and reliable

The fares are set competively and it’s reassuring to know your drivers details in advance so you know who to expect.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Should you be a large family or group and wish to travel together, rather than several cars, we can arrange private minibuses for your trip out, so don’t hesitate to contact us for more details.

🛺Tuk Tuk
In El Gouna you can experience the motorised rickshaw, approx 30LE for 2:3 persons

🚲E-bike (Baddel)
Baddel is an e-bike sharing system with multiple stations where you can take an e-bike from any station from 10 stations throughout El Gouna and return it at any other station.
E-Bike can be unlocked through a Mobile Application. Costs start at 25LE for 30 mins up to 140LE for 5 hours. A healthy way to explore the resort.

Egypt is to end Daylight Savings Time tonight Thursday October 26th/Friday October 27th, the clocks will be set back one hour at midnight to 11 p.m. and continues throughout the winter period for a period of six months.

In Europe the winter time start on Saturday night October 28th/Sunday October 29th, the clocks will be set back one hour.

🇾🇪love a drama, if something happens in the street everybody is either against you or with you. The louder you are the more people are with you.
🇾🇪everything is bukra (tomorrow)
🇾🇪everything is inshallah (god willing)
🇾🇪so patience is everything
🇾🇪Honking the car horn means several things: danger, do you want a ride or just ‘helloooo’
🇾🇪taxi meters conveniently never seem to be working
🇾🇪crossing the street is like a scene from mission impossible
🇾🇪You need eyes in the back of your head to drive and pedestrians take priority on the road or at least think they do
🇾🇪you’ll see a whole family ride on a motorbike and not a helmet between them
🇾🇪white lines in the road and car parks were painted to look pretty as no one rarely drives within them
🇾🇪if invited out to dinner don’t expect to pay
🇾🇪literally everything can be delivered
🇾🇪There’s always either dust or sand in your home no matter how many times you clean
🇾🇪breakfast dish foul tameya can also be eaten for dinner
🇾🇪Wifi can be temperamental especially on weekends when everyone is surfing or there’s an Egyptian football game on
🇾🇪The letter P is often pronounced as B especially when written so pasta becomes Basta 🤷‍♀️
🇾🇪Everything has a special price
🇾🇪It’s ok to open something in the supermarket, eat or drink it while shopping and pay at end
🇾🇪health +safety doesn’t exist, testing a gas bottle for leakage with a lighter 🤣
🇾🇪 common to see men holding hands or with their arms around each other walking along the street, it’s purely platonic friendship
🇾🇪strangers want your photograph
🇾🇪no one is early or on time

A little reminder!
It’s not unusual for us to have to ask for a copy of your passport ID page and room number for Luxor and Cairo trips - this is to enable us to apply for road permissions with the authorities.
It’s a government requirement.

We are also having to provide now for a lot of boat trips going forward so please be prepared to send us a copy when you book your trip.

Your passport copy is deleted once permissions have been requested, we do not retain on file for security

🥤 SUGARCANE JUICE 🥤
Sugarcane is Egypt’s national drink and known as ‘Asab’ in Arabic 🇪🇬

🌾Upper Egypt economy is heavily dependent on sugarcane production. Sugarcane is planted on the narrow strip of land along the banks of the Nile. It is planted in the spring and autumn seasons. Spring planting occurs in February and March, while autumn planting extends from September through October. The cane crop takes 11 to 12 months to grow

🌾The maker of the juice will feed long, uncut stalks slowly into an opening at the front of a rather antiquated machine. It will loudly rumble as it removes the stalk and grinds up the softer inside. After a couple of minutes, a stream of thick and sugary liquid pours into a glass

🌾You can usually identify the shops and stands that sell the juice by the piles of sugarcane sticks stacked on top of each other on the ground outside or the floor inside, or even decoratively arranged in front.

🌾This naturally sweet drink is so refreshing, packed with iron, hydrating you and gives a quick energy boost so very popular in hot summer months and during Ramadan

HURGHADA AIRPORT 🛫DEPARTURES

After having an awesome Hurghada holiday some visitors are often less enthused about the departure experience at the airport. It’s not too bad if you know what to expect, so here’s a brief overview to get you prepared.

🛫You should arrive at the airport 3 hours before your flight, hopefully you’ve booked your private transfer with Tourific Excursions to avoid the masses.

🛫You will need to show your passports and proof of flight to airport security on the door before you enter the terminal - you can show the flight booking on your phone/app, you don’t have to have a printed copy

🛫Once inside you will see a Pearl Assist desk they can offer fast track
$20 or $45 with lounge access should you want it

🛫Proceed to the 1st security check. ALL of your luggage will be scanned, jewellery, belt, loose money etc will need to go into the tray so be prepared. Sometimes you have to take your shoes off to be scanned but this appears random.

🛫 Everyone will go through a scanner and be given a thorough pat down by an officer of the same s*x. There are separate queues for men and women. Young children also have to go through the queue according to their gender. The queues are next to each other and you will be able to see your children at all times. In the event that security wish to inspect something a bit closer in one of your bags, you will be asked to sign a form to confirm this was done.

🛫Proceed to check in, where you will have your boarding card issued and a departure card issued. Even if travelling with hand luggage only, you still need to go to check in

🛫The departure card must be completed prior to passport control so please have a pen with you as these are like gold dust in the terminal. Once completed, hold your passport open with the departure card in the page of your arrival visa for the office to check the date and stamp it.

🛫 Another security check point so be prepared to remove shoes, watches etc. again. There is also separate queues for the scanner again according to gender.

🛫Once through, there is one more check of your boarding pass which will be stamped and you are in the departure lounge.

🛫The departure lounge has several duty free shops (ci******es / to***co are cheap but alcohol and perfume isn’t) , upstairs there is several eateries and a bar (the airport is expensive) it’s quite common especially for families to bring their own food into the airport but no liquids or drinks.

🛫There are several smoking lounges and bathrooms.

🛫 If you are returning to the U.K. your flight will likely depart from one of the furthest gates away and there is typically another random security check at the gate so be prepared and allow time for this.

Why you should say NO to dolphin shows!

🐬Dolphins in captivity suffer from a number of health conditions resulting in them dying much earlier than in the wild.

🐬Dolphins are made to perform for their food, sometimes being starved so they cooperate.

🐬Dolphins are separated from their pods and their family. Dolphin calves or babies, especially, are captured and pulled away from their parents in the wild. These babies are meant to be with mum for 3-6 years.

🐬Dolphins are only given less than 1% of the space that they typically have available to them in their natural environment. They are given even less stimulation, swim in chemically treated pools, and are given antibiotics and medications for stomach ulcers due to behaviors like tank degradation, ingesting unnatural objects, and captivity-related injuries.

🐬Dolphins are social animals but live in tanks with only a few, if any, other animals sometimes even living in artificial pods with other species of dolphin.

🐬Dolphins exhibit a multitude of concerning behaviour in the form of attacking tank mates or self harm

🐬Dolphins in captivity will often slam their heads quite literally into the concrete walls that confine them, needless to say this is not natural.

🐬A day of fun for you means a lifetime of misery for these beautiful creatures

🐬Dolphins are not smiling it’s the shape of their face

🐬Please don’t pay to see dolphins anywhere other than in the WILD.
