A new discovery of a 3200 years old tomb in Saqqara, Egypt
Excavation by archaeologists from Leiden and Turin
Archaeologists from the National Museum of Antiquities (Leiden), the Museo Egizio (Turin, Italy) and Leiden University have found the grave of Panehsy, the 'steward of the temple of (the god) Amun', in Sakkara. The ancient Egyptian tomb is over three thousand years old, from the time of Pharaoh Ramses II (ca. 1250 BC). The research team also found four chapels from other tombs from the same period, including that of Yoeyoe, the "gold foil maker of the pharaoh's treasury." Sakkara served from 3000 BC. more than three thousand years as a burial place of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis.

Panehsy's tomb
Panehsy's tomb consists of a small temple building on a rectangular courtyard of 13.4 by 8.2 meters, three chapels, a colonnaded courtyard and a shaft to the underground burial chambers. The mudbrick walls are decorated with beautiful, colorful reliefs, which have been preserved up to a height of one and a half meters. These show scenes of Panehsy, his wife Baia ('the singer of Amun'), and of priests and sacrificial bearers. Panehsy's name and titles are mentioned in hieroglyphics: "Panehsy of Memphis" and "steward of the temple of (the god) Amun." Memphis was an important city at the time. Panehsy lived there and may have been born there. The name Panehsy is more common during this time, but this particular official was unknown until now.
