Middle Kingdom mummification materials re-discovered in Luxor
during cleaning the courtyard of the tomb of Ipi (TT 315) where the mission unearthed these Jars inside an auxiliary chamber located on its north east corner. the jars were previously discovered by the American Egyptologist Herbert Winlock between 1921-1922 and placed in a room on the north-eastern side of the outer courtyard without cleaning until the Spanish-Egyptian mission this year resurfaced. He continued that The identification of these materials is of great importance for understanding the mummification techniques used in the early Middle Kingdom and the assessment of the kinds of items, tools, and substances involved in the process of embalming.
jars contained around 300 sacks with natron salt, oils, sand, and other substances, as well as the stoppers of the jars and a scraper are also found and among the most outstanding pieces of the collection are the Nile clay and marl large jars, some with potmarks and hieratic.

An exciting week for NEW DISCOVERIES. Gorgeous figure of Queen Tiye revealed when they lifted the Amenhotep III statue at Kom el-Hettan. Marvellous detail in the wig and headdress. Look forward to seeing it after conservation when they can decide what stone it really is. Is it calcite?
Once again, our thanks to the EEF list for the notice:
"The European Egyptian mission working in King Amenhotep III
funerary temple at Kom Al-Hittan area on Luxor west bank, has
uncovered a beautifully carved statue possibly of Queen Tiye.
Tiye was the wife of king Amenhotep III and grandmother of the
boy king Tutankhamun. The newly discovered statue is carved in
alabaster and uncovered beside the right leg of the lower part
of a statue of her husband King Amenhotep III. Minister of
Antiquities, Dr. Khaled El-Enany describes the queen statue as
"beautiful, distinguished and unique." He said that it is the
first time to find an alabaster statue of Queen Tiye inside the
temple as all her previously discovered ones were carved in
quartzite. Dr. Hourig Sourouzian, Head of the mission said that
the queen statue was accidentally discovered while lifting up
the lower part of king Amenhotep III colossus. The Queen statue
was found beside the right leg of the king's colossus. Dr.
Sourouzian asserted that the statue is in a very good conservation
condition and it still keeps its ancient colours. Consolidation
work and fine restoration are to be carried out on the statue."

Another 360° marvel from Egypt VR. The Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak Temple - one of the greatest architectural wonders of the ancient world. (Click and drag to look around).
Here you can see the central nave of the Hall, lined by a double row of 12 grand columns some 20 metres high, with wide, bell-shaped capitals representing the feathery blossoms of flowering papyrus stalks.
Although today it is open to the sky, try to imagine the Great Hypostyle Hall in its heyday, cloaked by massive ceiling slabs which kept the space in a sombre semidarkness, split by a few beams of dusty sunshine.
Most of them are gone now, but the spaces between the columns once bustled with statues of kings and gods. In the centre of this image you can see one of a pair of statues thought to be King Amenmesse, the grandson of Ramesses II who completed the Great Hypostyle Hall.
In the background is the obelisk of Thutmose I. His were the first obelisks erected at Karnak Temple, some 200 years before Ramesses’ time.

The tomb that leaves you breathless.
Nefertari. "To the modern ear, the sound of her name evokes visions of unrivalled splendour, surpassing beauty and supreme power." - John K. McDonald.
For over 20 years Nefertari was the beloved first queen of the great Ramesses II and mother of at least six of her husband's many, many children.
No small part of Nefertari's fame comes from her brilliantly-decorated tomb (QV66) in the Valley of the Queens in western Thebes. It is one of the true treasures of ancient Egypt and is renowned for its amazing beauty.
Was there true love between husband and wife? We'll never really know, but Ramesses did lavish upon his wife some endearing epithets: "Lady of Charm", "Sweet of Love", and "Rich of Praise".

The Lost City of Akhenaten is back

Pharaoh Akhenaten imposed a single religion, based on the worship of the sun disk “Aten,” and built a new capital city, Amarna, using entirely new architectural techniques. For the first time, researchers were able to reproduce 3D models of some of its buildings.

The Nubian Giraffe 1827
by Jacques-Laurent Agasse (c.1827), depicts one of the three giraffes sent to Europe by Mehmet Ali Pasha (another was Zarafa). This one was received by George IV in London. The gentleman shown in the top hat is Edward Cross, operator of the menagerie at Exeter Exchange and then Royal Surrey Gardens. Agasse painted many other animals from his collection.
