Comet Swift-Tuttle & the Perseids
Every year, our planet Earth crosses & intersects the orbital path of Comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbiting the sun in a period of 133 years
Every time this comet passes through the inner solar system, the sun warms and softens up the ices in the comet, causing it to release fresh cometary material (debris) into its orbital stream.
These debris slam into the Earth’s upper atmosphere, and due to their very high speed and friction between them and the Earth's atmosphere they result in lighting up the nighttime with fast-moving Perseid meteors which can observe in the sky with the naked eye without telescopes.
Perseid meteor shower is expected to produce the most meteors in the predawn hours of August 11, 12 & 13, in a dark moonless sky
Tracing Perseid meteors backward, they all seem to come from the constellation Perseus, Hence, the meteor shower is named in honor of the constellation Perseus the Hero
